ENVELOPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,662, dated September 2, II 884.

Application filed October 27, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KNOTT H. PEDRIGK, of Lynn, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Envelopes, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the envelope open; Fig. 2, a side elevation showing a portion of the front removed, and Fig. 3 a view showing a modification of the improvement.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

My invention relates to that class of envelopes which are provided with perforations to enable them to be opened more readily than plain or solid envelopes; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which, in some respects, a more produced than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.

In the drawings, A represents the front, and B the back, of the envelope. The front is provided at either end with a flap, a, which is folded between the front and back and eemented to the back. Both the front and back are extended upwardly above the body proper to form the flaps m (Z. the flap to being provided with a coating of adhesive cement on its inner face to attach it to the flap d in sealing the letter. The cement may, however, be applied to the flap d,if preferred. A series of perforations, Z, extend the entire length of the envelope at the base of the flaps m d,along the line of the top of the body proper; butinstead of the perforations the envelope may be indented, creased, or cut partially through one or both of the flaps on said line, if preferred.

In the use of my improvement the letter- (ModeL) sheet is so folded that when it is inserted in the body of the envelope it will not extend above the perforations Z, the flaps m d being sealed,after the insertion of the sheet, by wetting the cement and pressing the parts together in the usual manner. To open the letter both of the flaps m d are torn off on the line of the perforations Z, thus obviating the necessity of using a knife or other implement for thatpurpose.

In Fig. 3 the flaps :n are represented as formed on the sides of the front and cemented down to the outside of the back, the flaps at (Z being formed on the end of the envelope, this style being more especially adapted for putting up cards, cigars, gloves, and other small articles of merchandise; but, if desired, the flaps x in this style may be arranged between the front and back.

To prevent the flaps at (Z from being accidentally torn from the body of the envelope, after they are sealed together, by articles with which they are brought into contact catching the ends, I round or curve their outer edges from o to uin such a manner that the flaps project very little, if any, above the perforations attheir ends, thus affording no means whereby they may be injuriously engaged with surrounding objects.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, an

' envelope consisting of the front A and back B, united at their ends and provided with the upwardly-projecting flaps at (Z, both of said flaps being curved or rounded from end to end, and both provided with a series of perforations, Z, and the flap 112, provided wither coating of mucilage orcement on its inner face, all substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.
