Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,692, dated November 20, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, M. E. RUDASILL, of Shelby, in the county 0f Cleveland and State of North Carolina, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Hatchets; 1 and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. 1

The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a revolving spring claw, in combination with the hatchet.

In the annexed drawings making a part of this specification A represents a hatchet, which is provided with a handle B, secured to it in the usual manner.

C, represents a spring claw made and attached to the hatchet in the manner represented in the drawings. This claw is provided with a projection or knob sc, which fits into a recess 1n the hatchet, as shown in l Figures l and 2. This claw revolves u on the handle B, and around the hatchet. W ien the claw is in the position seen in Fig. 2, the edge of the hatchet is protected and cannot be injured by striking it against nails, &c. The hatchet may then be used as a hammer. When the claw is in the position seen in Fig. 1, the edge of the hatchet may be used for cutting as seen and the claw may be used for drawing nails and for such purposes.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Mtters Patent is- The employment of the rotating spring claw, C, in combination with the hatchet, A, the same being used substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
