ATTORNEY United rates Patent Ofiice 3,070,278 Patented Dec. 25, 1962 This invention relates to bags, and more particularly, concerns bags formed of thin, limp plastic sheeting.
Transparent bags are made in substantial quantities from thin cellophane, polyethylene or other plastic sheeting to package various items which are visible through the bag walls and thereby facilitate the sale thereof when such packaged items are suitable displayed for view by customers.
One form of such bag construction is particularly adapted to be suspended from rod supports by the formation of an opening in an upper portion of the bag to receive said rod support. However, the bags are formed of very light gauges of plastic sheeting and offer little tear resistance, which makes the suspending type of bag susceptible to tearing at the opening therein, thereby interfering with the orderly display thereof on the suspending rods.
Accordingly, one object of this invention is to provide an improved bag construction which includes a stiffened header portion for rendering the same quite resistant to tearing, particularly when openings are formed in the header portion.
Another object of this invention is to provide an im proved bag construction formed of thin, limp plastic sheeting which includes a stiffened header portion for facilitating the bag filling operation and for properly draping the filled bag when the same is suspended for display of the contents thereof.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

As shown in FIGS. 1, 2, designates a bag embodying the invention. The same comprises a tubular body 11 formed from thin, limp plastic sheeting such as polyethylene, cellophane or the like. The body 11 comprises opposed rectangular walls 12, 13 which are seamed together along side edges 14, 15 thereof and are closed at one end, as by folded edge 16; the bag being open at the opposite end thereof for filling the same.
The walls 12, 13 of body 11 are seamed together along a transverse line 17 suitably spaced from edge 16, as by hot pressing or the like, thereby providing an upper header portion 18. A centrally disposed opening 19 is formed in header portion 18 to permit the bag 10, after filling the same and sealing the lower open end thereof, to be suitably suspended on a rod, not shown.
The bag 10 may be provided with various forms of closures for the lower open end thereof. As shown in FIGS. 1, 2, the closure may comprise an upturned panel 20 extending upwardly from the bottom folded edge 21 of front wall 12. The free edge 22 of panel 20 is located above the free edge 23 of back Wall 13; said bottom Wall edge 23 in turn being located above the folded edge 21 of front wall 12. The upper portion of panel 20 being disposed between walls 12, 13 and secured at its side edges to seamed wall edges 14, 15; there is provided a closure means which allows for easy filling of the bag and further, permits removal of the contents thereof for examination and replacement.
It is understood that bag 10 may be sealed at its open end after filling, by a cross seam, along the bottom edges, in a conventional manner, in lieu of the closure shown in FIGS. 1, 2.
The header portion 18 of bag 10 is stiffened by the application of a coating of material 25 to the outer surface of said header portion on wall 12. Such coating 25 may be a flexible varnish having a suitable resin base, which upon drying, imparts a desired degree of stiffness to the otherwise limp material forming header portion 18.
As it is usual to imprint bag 10 on at least wall 12 thereof, with ornamental material, trademarks, instructions, etc., stiffening coating 25 may be a transparent varnish which is effective to impart increased brightness to the printed matter. The coating 25 may be applied by suitable rolls as the bag 10 is being formed and printed.
As shown in FIG. 3, the stiffening coating 25 may be applied to the outer surface of wall 13, as Well as wall 12, in the header portion 18, to obtain a desired degree of stiffness, though using very thin coatings. It is understood that the coating 25 may be discontinuous as well as continuous, in respect to the exposed surface portions of header portion 18, providing the desired degree of stiffness is attained.
It has been found that bags having the stiffened header portion show increased resistance to tearing, particularly at opening 19 therein. Furthermore, the bags of the instant invention lend themselves to easier filling as com pared to the conventional, limp bag structure. Also, the stiffened header portion gives an improved draping effect when the bag is suspended for display.
As various changes might be made in the embodiments of the invention herein disclosed without departing from the spirit thereof, it is understood that all matter herein shown or described shall be deemed illustrative and not limiting except as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent:
1. A bag having a tubular body of thin, limp transparent material forming the walls thereof, said body being closed along one edge portion thereof and open along another edge portion thereof extending parallel to said one edge portion, the opposed walls of said body being secured together along a transverse line extending parallel to said edge portions, said transverse line being closer to said one edge portion than said other edge portion to provide a transversely extending header between said transverse line and said one edge portion and between the side edges thereof, the limp Walls of said bag being formed with an opening located within said header to provide means for suspending said bag from a supporting member passing through said opening, a flexible resin coating on a surface of said header for stiffening the header portion of said bag, said coating extending to the edge of said opening to reinforce the marginal edge portions about said opening against tearing.
2. A bag as in claim 1 wherein said header portion bears printed matter on the outer surface thereof, and said stiffening coating extends over the entire surface area of said header portion and over said printed matter.
