Filed Apr. 24, 1961, Ser. No. 104,865 14 Claims. (Cl. 206-4514) This invention relates to improvements in cartons desirably for use in displaying the contents thereof,

The principal objects of this invention are:

First, to provide a carton adapted for the displaying of the contents thereof and for the effective supporting of the several packaged or cartoned objects in non contacting relation to each other.

Second, to provide a carton having these advantages which may be formed of an integral blank and shipped or delivered to packagers in collapsed form and readily set up for use.

Third, to provide a carton having these advantages which when erected is very rigid in proportion to the gauge of stock used.

Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.

A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an erected carton embodying my invention.

FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of FIG. 1.

FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of FIG, 1.

FIG. 4 is a plan view of the blank of my improved carton.

FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form or embodiment of my invention.

FIG. 6 is a cross sectional view on a line corresponding to line 66 of FIG. 5.

FIG. 7 is a plan view of the blank of the embodiment of my invention shown in FIGS. 5 and 6.

The embodiment of my invention shown in FIGS, 1, 2, 3 and 4 is especially designed for the holding of elongated articles and includes holder members in which the packaged articles have snap in engagement. The articles are not illustrated as they may vary greatly in shape.

The embodiment of my invention shown in FIGS. 5-7 inclusive is designed to receive articles of difierent shapes from that shown in the embodiment of FIGS. l-2 or it may be used for displaying a large number of articles.

The embodiment of my invention shown in FIGS. 14 inclusive comprises an intermediate bottom member 1, which is generally rectangular, and outer bottom members 2-2 also of generally rectangular shape.

The upwardly projecting article holders designated generally by the numeral 3 are of downwardly facing angle section and comprise the inner and outer reaches 4 and 5 respectively which are hingedly connected at their upper edges 6 and they are hingedly connected to the inner and outer bottom members 1 and 2 at 7 and 8 respectively, these hinge connections being conventionally shown by dotted lines in FIG. 4.

The intermediate bottom member 1 is provided with relatively narrow extensions 9 which project therefrom at the ends of the article holder members and these extensions constitute supports for the outer bottom memers when the carton is in erected position.

In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 14 inclusive, the outer reaches 5 of the article holder members are provided with laterally projecting lugs 19 which when the carton is in erected position supportingly engage the extensions 9, see FIGS. 1, 3 and 4.

r ice The walls 11 are hingedly connected to the ends of the intermediate bottom member '1 and to its extensions 9 by score lines indicated at 12 and in this embodiment, these walls terminate in corner flaps 13 disposed on the inner side of the walls 14 which are hingedly connected to the outer edges of the outer bottom members 2 by the score lines 15. When erected, the corner flaps in the embodiment illustrated are adhesively secured to the inner sides of the walls 4 by adhesive indicated at 16. With the parts thus arranged, when erected the carton is strong and rigid in proportion to the weight of stock used and it is capable of carrying relatively heavy loads.

The embodiment of FIGS. 1-4 inclusive is especially designed as a display carton and when filled or loaded is desirably wrapped or enclosed in a transparent wrapper. It will of course be obvious that a cover could be provided or a cover having a transparent top could be used but the structure, as stated, is relatively strong and rigid in erected position. The support members constitute effective reinforcing means so that it may be wrapped in transparent material, in which case the contents are fully visible.

The embodiment of my invention shown in FIGS. 5, 6 and 7 comprises bottom members 17 and 18 which are connected by the partition member designated generally by the numeral 19 and comprising the members 249 and 21, 21 being hingedly connected to the bottom member 17 at 22, and member 21 being hingedly connected to the bottom member 18 at 23. These members 20 and 21 are disposed in side by side relation and terminate adjacent but in spaced relation to the walls 24 which are connected to the bottom member 17 at 25. The bottom member 17 has extending portions 26 which extend between the ends of the partition member 19 and the walls 24. The walls 24 constitute reinforcing members for these extensions as is the case in the corresponding walls 11 in the embodiment shown in FIGS, 1-4 inclusive. When in erected position, the ends of the bottom member 18 overlap these bottom portions 26 of the bottom member 17. The bottom member 17 is provided with a side wall 27 and the bottom member 18 with a side wall 23 hingedly secured to the respective bottom members by the score lines 29 and 30 respectively.

The parts are held in erected position by the corner flaps 31 which in the embodiment illustrated are disposed on the inner side of and adhesively secured to the walls 27 and 28, see FIG. 5, the adhesive being indicated at 32, :66 FIG. 6.

In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 4, both of the holder members 3 have slots therein and these slots are aligned, but it should be understood that they may be staggered for certain products and that the slots may be omitted from one or both embodiments, thus adapting the carton of my invention for varying types of products.

Both embodiments of my invention are desirably formed of a single blank and there is very little waste stock.

As stated, the carton when erected is very rigid and proportioned to the stock used and the size of the carton. The adhesive may be applied when the carton is erected but desirably pressure sealing adhesive is used.

I have illustrated and described two highly practical embodiments of my invention. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A carton comprising an intermediate bottom member and outer bottom members, upwardly projecting article holder members of downwardly facing angle section comprising inner and outer hingedly connected reaches, the lower edges of the inner reaches being hingedly connected to the side edges of said intermediate bottom member and the lower edges of outer reaches being hingedly connected to the inner edges of said outer bottom members, said article holder members having aligned article receiving slots extending downwardly from the tops thereof, said intermediate bottom member having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said article holder members, said outer bottom members having portions at the ends thereof disposed below said extensions of said intermediate bottom member, the outer reaches of said article support members having lugs at the ends thereof disposed in overlapping supported engagement with said intermediate bottom member extensions, walls connected to the end edges of said intermediate bottom member and its said extensions, and walls connected to the outer edges of said outer bottom members, said walls being supportedly connected at their adjacent ends.

2. A carton comprising an intermediate bottom menn ber and outer bottom members, upwardly projecting article holder members of downwardly facing angle section comprising inner and outer hingedly connected reaches, the lower edges of the inner reaches being hingedly con nected to the side edges of said intermediate bottom member and the lower edges of outer reaches being hingedly connected to the .inner edges of said outer bottom members, said intermediate bottom member having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said article holder members, said outer bottom members having portions at the ends thereof disposed below said extensions of said intermediate bottom member, the outer reaches of said article support members having lugs at the ends thereof disposed in overlapping supported engagement with said intermediate bottom member extensions, walls connected to the end edges of said intermediate bottom member and its said extensions, and walls connected to the outer edges of said outer bottom members, said walls being supportedly connected at their adjacent ends.

3. A carton comprising an intermediate bottom member and outer bottom members, cross members comprising inner and outer hingedly connected reaches, the lower edges of the inner reaches being hingedly connected to the side edges of said intermediate bottom member and the lower edges of outer reaches being hingedly connected to the inner edges of said outer bottom members, said intermediate bottom member having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said cross members, said outer bottom members having portions at the ends thereof disposed below said extensions of said intermediate bottom member, the outer reaches of said cross members having lugs at the ends thereof disposed in overlapping supported engagement with said intermediate bottom member extensions, walls connected to the end edges of said intermediate bottom member and its said extensions, and walls connected to the outer edges of said outer bottom members, said walls being supportedly connected at their adjacent ends.

4. A carton comprising an intermediate bottom member and outer bottom members, upwardly projecting article holder members of downwardly facing angle section comprising inner and outer hingedly connected reaches, the lower edges of the inner reaches being hingedly connected to the side edges of said intermediate bottom member and the lower edges of the outer reaches being hingedly connected to the inner edges of said outer bottom members, said holder members having article receiving upwardly opening recesses therein, said intermediate bottom member having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said article holder members, said outer bottom members having portions at the ends thereof disposed in supporte 4i engagement with ,said extensions of said intermediate bottom member, walls connected to the end edges of said intermediate bottom member and its said extensions and to the outer edges of said outer bottom member, sm'd walls being supportedly connected at their meeting ends when the carton is in erected position.

5. A carton comprising an intermediate bottom member and outer bottom members, upwardly projecting article holder members comprising inner and outer hingedly connected reaches, the lower edges of the inner reaches being hingedly connected to the side edges of said intermediate bottom member and the lower edges of the outer reaches being hingedly connected to the inner edges of said outer bottom members, said intermediate bottom member having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said article holder members, said outer bottom members having portions at the ends thereof disposed in supported engagement with said extensions of said intermediate bottom member, walls connected to the end edges of said intermediate bottom member and its said extensions and to the outer edges of said outer bottom member, said walls being supportedly connected at their meeting ends when the carton is in erected position.

A carton comprising at least two bottom members and an upwardly projecting article holder member of downwardly facing angle section comprising hingedly connected reaches, the lower edge of one reach being hingedly connected to one bottom member and the lower edge of the other reach to the other bottom member, said holder member having article receiving openings therein, one of said bottom members having extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of the article holder, said extensions being in lapping supporting engagement with the other of said bottom members, said bottom members having coacting walls thereon which are connected at their adjacent ends when the carton is erected and act to hold said holder member in its erected position.

A carton comprising at least two bottom members and an upwardly projecting article holder member of downwardly facing angle section comprising hingedly connected reaches, the lower edge of one reach being hingedly connected to one bottom member and the lower edge of the other reach to the other bottom member, one of said bottom members having extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of the article holder, said extensions being in lapping supporting engagement with the other of said bottom members, said bottom members having coacting walls thereon which are connected at their adjacent ends when the carton is erected and act to hold said holder member in its erected position.

A carton formed of an integral blank and comprising bottom members and an upwardly projecting article holder member of downwardly facing channel section having reaches hingedly connected to each other at their upper edges, one reach being hingedly connected to one of said bottom members, the other reach being hingedly connected to the other of said bottom members, one of said bottom members having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said holder member, the ends of the other bottom member being disposed in supported relation to said extensions, the bottom member having extensions provided with walls extending to the ends of said extensions and constituting reinforcing members therefor, the other bottom member having a wall disposed in parallel relation to said article holder member when the carton is erected, said walls being connected at their adjacent ends and acting to preventseparating movement of said bottom members relalative to each other and the collapsing of said holder member.

A carton formed of an integral blank and comprising bottom members and an upwardly projecting member having reaches hingedly connected to each other at their upper edges, one reach being hingedly connected to one 5 of said bottom members, the other reach being hingedly connected to the other of said bottom members, one of said bottom members having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said upwardly projecting member, the ends of the other bottom member being disposed in supported relation to said extensions, the bottom member having extensions provided with walls extending to the ends of said extensions and constituting reinforcing members therefor, the other bottom member having a wall disposed in parallel relation to said article holder member when the carton is erected, said walls being connected at their adjacent ends and acting to prevent separating movement of said bottom members relative to each other and the collapsing of said holder member.

A carton formed of an integral blank and comprising bottom members and an upwardly projecting member integral with said bottom members and comprising upwardly projecting connected reaches, one reach being hingedly connected to one of said bottom members and constituting an extension therefor, the other reach being hingedly connected to the other of said bottom members and constituting an extension therefor, one of said bottom members having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said upwardly projecting member and upon which the ends of the other bottom member are supportedly disposed, walls on said bottom member having said extensions extending along said extensions and constituting reinforcing members therefor, the other bottom member having walls disposed in parallel relation to said reinforcing member, said walls being connected at their adjacent ends and acting to prevent separating movement of said bottom members relative to each other.

A carton formed of an integral blank and comprising bottom members and an upwardly projecting member integral with said bottom members and comprising upwardly projecting connected reaches, one reach being connected to one of said bottom members, the other reach being connected to the other of said bottom members, one of said bottom members having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said upwardly projecting member and to which the ends of the other bottom member are connected, walls on said bottom member having said extensions extending along said extensions and constituting reinforcing members therefor, the other bottom member having walls disposed in parallel relation to said reinforcing member, said walls being connected at their adjacent ends and acting to prevent separating movement of said bottom members relative to each other.

A carbon comprising an intermediate bottom member and outer bottom members, laterally spaced upwardly projecting holder members, each comprising inner and outer hingedly connected reaches, the lower edges of the inner reaches being hingedly connected to the side edges of the intermediate bottom member and the lower edges of the outer reaches being hingedly connected to the inner edges of said outer bottom members, said inner bottom member having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said holder members, the outer bottom members having portions at the ends thereof disposed in interlapping engagement with said intermediate bottom member, at least one of said article holder members having upwardly opening article receiving recesses therein, Walls connected to the end edges of said intermediate bottom member and its said extensions and to the outer edges of said outer bottom members, said walls being supportedly connected at their meeting ends when the carton is in erected position.

13. A carton comprising an intermediate bottom memher and outer bottom members, laterally spaced upwardly projecting holder members, each comprising inner and outer hingedly connected reaches, the lower edges of the inner reaches being hingedly connected to the side edges of the intermediate bottom member and the lower edges of the outer reaches being hingedly connected to the inner edges of said outer bottom members, said inner bottom member having relatively narrow extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said holder members, the outer bottom members having portions at the ends thereof disposed in interlapping engagement with said intermediate bottom member, walls connected to the end edges of said intermediate bottom member and its said extensions and to the outer edges of said outer bottom members, said walls being supportedly connected at their meeting ends when the carton is in erected position.

14. A carton comprising two bottom members, an upwardly projecting intermediate spacer member comprising hingedly connected reaches, the lower edge of one reach being hingedly connected to one bottom member and the lower edge of the other reach to the other bottom member, one of said bottom members having extensions projecting therefrom at the ends of said intermediate member, said extensions being in lapping supporting engagement with the other of said bottom members, said bottom members having coacting walls thereon which are connected at their adjacent ends when the carton is erected and act to hold said holder member in its erected position.
