SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,408, dated January 6, 1885.

Application filed January 28, 1884. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, Grnnou GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union township, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this improvement is to produee alight, simply, and cheaply constructed, strong, and efficient gate and latch that can be securely and conveniently fastened on either side of the gate-post. These results are at tained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith filed, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a top view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a rear view of the gate-post endwise of the gate, and showing the staples on each side thereof.

The letters A refer to a series of horizontally-arranged wires provided with short spiral coils midway between theirends, for a purpose hereinafter to be fully explained.

B B represent frame-pieces for the gate, to which the wires A are secured, as shown at a and a.

G and 0 represent fence-posts, of which the post 0 is provided on opposite sides with sta ples F and F.

E E represent wires securing the gate-frame piece B to the fenoe-post O in a manner to form hinges for the gate.

D D represent wires secured to the gateframe piece 0, as shown, and provided with eyes (I in the direction of the post 0.

G is an angled wire passing through the latch or lever H, which is provided with a recess or slot, h, adapted to fit over the staples F F on the sides of the fence-post G. The angled wire G connects the latch-lever H with the gate by means of the eyes (I in the tie- 5 wires D D, secured to the frame-piece B.

The frame-piece B and the wires E E may be dispensed with, and the horizontal wires A may be secured to the fence-post G in the same manner as they are connected to the framepiece B. The wires A may also be provided with barbs when it is necessary to provide against stock.

The operation of the gate is very simple and easily understood. \Vhen the slot of the latch-lever H is adjusted on one of the staples, it acts as a fulcrum for the latch, a pressure upon which will spring the coils A, and as the latch is pushed around it will spring against the post G, as shown in Fig. 1, and hold the gate perfeetl y secure until purposely adjusted otherwise. By undoing the latch the angled wire G may be swung around and the gate made fast in the same manner by means of the staple on the opposite side of the post 0.

Having explained the construction and operation of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. In a gate, the wires A, having spring-coils A, in combination with the frame-pieces B B, the tie-wires or hinges E, and the post 0, substantially as specified, for the purpose set forth.

2. The latch-lever H, having an open slotted end for engaging with the staples F F 011 opposite sides of the post 0, in combination with the gate-frame and the connecting-wire G, substantially as specified, and for the purpose set forth.
