BOOT OR SHOE.
l1\IO..,12,O75.` Patented Peb. 24, 1885.
PATENT JAMES B. TURNER, OF BROGKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.312,675, dated February 24, 1885.
Application filed May l0, 1884.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, JAMES B. TURNER, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth, State of Massachusetts, haveinventcd a certain new and useful Improvement in Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a description suffi ciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrical perspective view of my improved boot or shoe; and Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken on the dotted line x x.
Like letters of reference i ndicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
tMy invention relates to that class of boots and shoes which are provided with elastic gores; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forlh and claimed, by which a more desirable article of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement willbe readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation, its eXtreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
4In the drawings, Arepresents the quarters, B the Vamps, and C the leg of the upper.
Disposed in the front part of the shoe, and secured to the leg portion ofthe same by the seams d d, there is an elastic gore, D, eXtending nearly to the top of the leg, and downwardly to where the liapsf unite at a.
Arranged centrally down the front of the gore, and firmly attached thereto, is a leather or inelastic stay, E, the lower end of which is secured to the Vamps in the seam at z, and its (No model.)
[ upper end provided with the loop or strap K.
The elastic gore affords nearly all the advantages possessed by a Congress boot, excluding the dust and air, and at the same time being hidden from view by the buttoned flapsf.
The stay E being attached to the Vamps at z enables the shoe to be pulled on readily by the strap K and the ordinary strap Hwithout injury to the gore, which would be liable to injury if the strap K were used and the stay omitted.
The lining J of the leg C overlaps the raw edges of the gore at the seams d, 4and the linings m of the flaps f pass under the gore at said seams, said linings, the gore, and leg` being stitched through and through or united bythe seams d.
I do not confine myself to fastening the flaps f with buttons, or to using the strap H, as the strap may be omitted and the iiaps laced nstead of but-toned, if desired, although I deem it preferable not to omit said strap, and to use buttons instead of lacings or strings; neither do I confinemyself to forming the gore D of one piece, as it maybe constructed in two parts, or more, it' desired, the parts being properly united.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is-f l; A boot or shoe having in its front opening the elastic gore D, provided with the longitudinal central non-elastic stay, E, and the strap K, substantially as described.
2. In a boot or shoe, thc combination of the buttouflapsf and the strap II with the elastic gore D, having longitudinal central nonelastic stay, E, and the strap II, substantially as described.
