PLASTERlNG-TROWEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,464, dated April 28, 1885.
Application filed January 17, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it -known that I, JOHN C. IIUTHER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blastering-Trowels,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the handles of plasteriug-trowels; and it consists, substantially, in constructing the handle so as to be adjustable both vertically and longitudinally with reference to the blade, the invention being fully described in the following specification, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved plastering-trowel, showing the handle in various positions of adjustment in dotted lines; Eig. 2, a plan of the same; Eig. 3, an end elevation viewed as indicated by arrow in Fig. 2, drawn tojshow more fully the means by which the vertical adjustment ofthe handle is effected, parts being sectioned on the dotted line y; and Fig. 4:, a transverse section of one of the standards b, taken on the dotted liuex in Fig. 3,and viewed 4asindicated by arrow, drawn to show more fully the vertical groove or seat in said standard.
Referring to the parts, A is the blade of the trowel, and B the handle thereof. The blade is provided with a rigid longitudinal rib, lr, having its sides cut under or dovetailed, as shown in cross-section in Fig. 3.
b Z are two. similar standards rising from the blade to form supports for the handle B. The standards b; are each provided with a horizontal foot, g, both. of which feet are grooved upon their under surfaces to t the undercut or dovetailed rib lc, as shown, and are intended to slide along said rib to permit longitudinal adjustment of the handle. The standards b are each further provided with a-vertical groove, c, on their outer faces.
The handle B is provided at each end with a plate or support, a, secured rigidly thereto, which supports, respectively, are made to tit and slide within the vertical grooves e of the standards, by means of which the handle may be vertically adjusted with reference to the standards and the blade of the trowel. These supports are each provided with a vertical slot, f, through each of which a clamping-screw or fastener, d, for the support passes, being secured in the standard back of the support. These fasteners serve to hold the handle in positions of vertical adjustment. A screw, i, passing vertically through the foot g of one of the standards and bearing against the upper surface of the rib 7c, serves to secure the handle in positions of longitudinal adjustment.
What I claim as my invention isl. The blade of a plastering-trowel, provided with an undercut or dovetail rib, 7c, secured thereto, in combination with standards b b for the handle, adjustably fitted to the rib k, with a fastening device, i, for the said standards, and the vertically-adjustable handle B, secured to the adjustable standards b b, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the standards b b, extending upward from the blade of a plastering-trowel, the handle B, provided at its ends with supports a, adj ustablly connected with said standards, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. The combination of the standards b b, rising from the blade of a plastering-trowel, provided with vertical grooves e e, and the handle B, provided with supports a a, fitted to the grooves e, with fastening devices d d, to hold the standards and supports together, sub stantiall y as specified.
JOHN C. HUTHER.
