UNTTED STATES PATENT @rrrcs.
WILLIAM HENRY KLINE, OF WATSONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEP-LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,728, dated June 9,1885.
' Application filed October 23, 1384. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KLINE, of \Vatsontown, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Step-Ladder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in step-ladders; and the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a step-ladder having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the ladder.
The side pieces or standards, A A, having the steps B, may be of the ordinary or of any approved construction, except that the said side pieces are provided near their upper ends with the horizontal pins 0 0, upon which washing or wiping cloths may be placed. The brace D is hinged to the metal angleplates 0 O, bolted to the upper step, E, and sidepieces, A A,as shown, the angle-plates O 0 serving also to stay and strengthen the stepladder.
Beneath the upper step or platform, E, is
placed the drawer F, which is for holding any small articles-such as hammer, nails, screw-driver, &c.-1iable to be used in connection with a step-ladder. The drawer is held by a single pivot, f, at the corner, as shown.
In and between the bars d d, composing the brace D, is journaled the cross-piece G. Upon this is secured the table H, which when the ladder is opened out to position for use automatically drops to horizontal position, where it is held by the rods or braces I and end h, that laps under the upper step, B, as shown in Fig. 1, so that a bucket of water or other article may be placed upon the table and be supported in convenient position for aperson working on the ladder. The lower ends of the rods or braces I are held by the eyes 6, se-
cured to the main standard A, and across the braces D is secured the cross-piece H, which comes against the braces I when the ladder is folded and causes the table H to fold automatically into the ladder; and in order that the table H may serve as a brace to hold the brace D opened out away from the main part of the ladder I pivot upon the upper side of the table, near its inner end, the button J, which is adapted to be turned against the inner edge of the upper step, B, as shown in Fig. 1.
Constructed as described, it will be seen that the ladder is not only improved in point of convenience, but is also strengthened and made more firm than the ordinary forms of step-ladders, and the table H, being entirely automatic in opening and closing with the ladder, does not complicate the ladder or render it more difficult to handle.
Instead of attaching the eyes I) to the edges of the uprights A A, as shown in the drawings, they might be attached to the rear edge of one or the other of the steps B, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a step-ladder, of the pins 0, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the landing E of a step-ladder, of the box or drawer F, pivoted to and arranged under the landing, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the pivoted support H, arranged to lap under the upper step, B, of the button J, pivoted upon the support and adapted to be turned for bracing the ladder, substantially as described.
4. In a step-ladder, the combination, with the pivoted support H, disposed to lap under the upper step, B, of the button J, pivoted upon said support, and the brace-rods I, connected to said support and to the front ladder legs or steps, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM HENRY KLINE.
