(Cl. 33189) This invention pertains to apparatus for the preparation of doors and door jambs for hinges and is particularly directed to hinge setting apparatus for hinges such as shown in my copending application Serial No. 196,413, filed May 21, 1962.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a hinge setting apparatus and procedure for quickly and accurately preparing a door and door jamb for the placement of hinges.
Another object is to provide hinge setting apparatus which does a highly accurate job Without special skill and care being required of the user of the apparatus.
And a still further object of this invention is to provide a'door and door jamb boring and mortising apparatus that can be quickly applied by an unskilled person while producing professional quality work.

As an example of one embodiment of this invention, there is shown a door 15 which is hung by hinges 16 such as shown in my aforementioned copending application Serial No. 196,413 on the door jamb 17. The apparatus here involved provides means for accurately boring the pilot hole 18 and its concentric counterbore 19 in exact vertical spaced position and properly located relative to the outer edge 20 of the door jamb 17 and the outer face 21 of the door 15. Furthermore, the apparatus here disclosed is adapted to cut the mortise slot 22 having the sides 23 in perfect alignment with the counterbore 19 and to mark the edge 20 and face 21 with a punch mark 24 to facilitate accurate driving of the locking pin or nail 30 for the hinge as shown in FIG. 13.
The preferred form of hinge to be utilized comprises a mounting plug 25 formed integral with the hinge arm 26 having at its outer end the integral hinge element 27 having the hinge pin bore 28. On the opposite end of the hinge arm 26 from the hinge element 27 is formed the semi-circular edge 29 which is concentric with the axis of the mounting plug 25. A diametrically formed locking pin or nail hole 31 is formed in the mounting plug 25 as best shown in FIG. 15.
In order to properly form the pilot holes 18 and counterbores 19 there is provided a frame comprising a jig 32, FIGS. 2 through 7, comprising the lower tube 33 and the upper rod 34 telescopically carried in the bore 35 of the tube 33. A suitable positioning pin 36 passing through the diametrically positioned bore 37 and the selectable bores 38 and 39 in the tube 33 provides means to relatively and positively axially position the rod 34 relative to the tube 33. The lower end of the tube 33 is fixed to the top portion 40 of a lower hollow rectangular slide guide 41 to the bottom portion 42 of which is fixed the foot plate 43. A yielding pressure foot 44 is mounted on the lower portion of the foot plate 43 comprising a housing 45 in which is vertically slidable the plunger 46 having a rubber floor contacting knob 47 adapted to engage the floor surface 48. A compression spring 49 normally urges the plunger 46 downwardly against the floor surface 48 so as to urge the jig 32 as a whole upwardly.
The upper end of the upper rod 34 is rigidly fixed to the lower portion 50 of the upper hollow rectangular slide guide 51, the top portion 52 of which is fixed to the lower end of the abutment shaft 53. To the upper end of the abutment shaft is pivotally mounted on a suitable pivot pin 54 a flip dog 55 having an abutment lug 56 having the door header abutment surface 57, and the door engaging abutment surface 58. When the dog is in the position shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 and in full line in FIG. 7, the abutment surface 57 engages the horizontal surface 59 of the door header for positioning the jig for door jamb preparation. When the dog 55 is positioned as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 and in broken line in FIG. 7, the abutment surface 58 of lug 56 engages the top surface 60 of the door for preparing the door 15 for the hinges, the thickness of the lug 56 between surfaces 58 and 61 providing the desired clearance between the door jamb header surface 59 and the top surface 60 of the door 15.
Drill guide bushings 62 are vertically slidable in suitable guideways 63 within the slide guides 41 and 51 to an upper position 64 for forming the door hinge portions and to a lower position 65 for forming the door jamb portions for the hinges. A suitable ball detent 64a carried in the slide guide 51 engaging appropriate notches 65a in the drill guide bushings 62, FIG. 6, serve to releasably hold the bushings in the upper or lower positions selected. Each guide bushing 62 has a bore 66, FIG. 6, which receives the outside diameter portion 67 of a combined drill and counterbore 68 having the pilot tip 69, the hole drilling portion for drilling the holes 18, and the counterboring portion 71 for forming the counterbore 19. A suitable drill chuck 72 having a stop surface 73 is adapted to engage an abutment surface 74 on the face of the drill guide bushings 62 to control the exact depth of the bottom 75 of the counterbore 19, the drill chuck 72 being fixed to a suitable power driven spindle of an electric drill or drill press, not shown.
The holes 18 are thus accurately vertically spaced on desired centers 64--64 on the door 15 and 65-65 on the jamb 17. Spacing laterally horizontally inwardly from the rear face 21 of the door 15 or the outer face 20 of the jarnb 17 by the stop plates 76 formed integral with the slide guides 41 and 51, as best shown in FIG. 6, which have abutment surfaces 77 adapted to engage the faces 20-21 to accurately define the dimension location 77a, FIG. 12, of the holes 18 and counterbores 19.
In order to mortise the slot portion defined by the bottom 22 and sides 23, FIG. 13, there is provided a specially constructed tool shown in FIG. 8, 9, 10 and 11. This tool comprises a top plate 78 having a pilot plug 79 fixed to and extending downwardly from the underside recessed surface 80 of the top plate 78. Rigidly fixed to the bottom surface 81 of the top plate 78 by suitable screws is the guide block 83. A longitudinal slot 84 is formed in the upper surface 85 of the guide block 83 having a bottom 86 and sides 87. A pair of cutting blades 88 having downwardly projecting horizontally disposed cutting edges 89 extending along the sides 87 of the guide block slot 84. The blades 88 are securely locked in position by locking strips 90 which secure the blades in slots 91 formed in the top plate 78.
A chisel bar 92 having a manual actuating handle 93 fixed to the outer end thereof is guided between the blades 88, the bottom 86 of the slot 84 and the bottom surface 81 of the top plate 78. The inner end of the chisel bar 92 is provided with an arcuate concave cutting blade 94 having its cutting edge 95 lying in the plane defined by the cutting edges 89 of the cutting blades 88. A stop block 96 is fixed to the chisel bar 92 which has an abutment surface 97 which is adapted to engage the abutment surface 98 of the guide block to limit the inward travel of the cutting edge 95 so that it does not strike the pilot plug 79 as the chisel bar 92 is pushed inwardly by handle 93.
A spring urged plunger 99 is slidably mounted in a bore 100 formed in the guide block 83 and has an outer abutment end 101 adapted to engage the abutment surface 97 of the stop block 96. A pin 102 is fixed across the bore 100 and passes through the elongated slot 103 formed in the plunger 99 to limit outward travel of the plunger. The reduced inner end portion 104 of the plunger 99 is slidably mounted in a guide bushing 105 fixed in the bore 100. A pointed end 106 is formed on the inner reduced end 104 of the plunger 99.
In operation: The jig 32 is placed in the door jamb frame 17 as shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 7, and with the drill guide bushings in down position 65, the combined drill and counterbore 68 is entered in the bore 66 of the drill guide bushings 62 to form the bores 18 and counterbores 19 in the door frame as shown in FIG. 12. The door 15 is similarly prepared, FIGS. 4 and 5, by placing the jig 32 with the surface 58 of the lug 56 against the top 60 of the door and the drill guide bushings 62 in up position for utilizing the combined drill and counterbore 68 to complete the pilot holes 18 and counterbores 19 in the door 15.
The tool of FIGS. 8, 9, 10 and 11 is then utilized to mortise out the door jamb and door to form the slot 22 having the sides 23 by placing the pilot plug '79 of the top plate 78 in the bore 18 and striking the top surface 107 with a hammer until bottom surface 81 engages the door or jamb surface to cause blades 88 to cut down and form the sides 23. The chisel bar 92 is then driven inwardly by striking the handle 93 to cause the cutting blade 4- 94 to form the bottom 22 to complete the slot between the sides 23. As the chisel bar 92 reaches the end of its inward stroke, the plunger 99 is actuated by the stop block 96 causing the point 106 to make a center punch mark 24' to facilitate the accurate driving of the locking pin or nail 30 into the plug 25 as shown in FIG. 15.
I claim:
1. A hinge setting apparatus comprising in combination:
(A) a frame including,
(B) a lower tube having longitudinally spaced diametrically disposed selectable bores therein,
(C) an upper rod telescopically carried in the bore of said tube having a diametrically positioned bore,
(D) a positioning pin arranged to be presented in said selectable bores in said lower tube and said diametrically positioned bore in said upper rod to relatively and positively axially position said rod and tube,
(E) a lower hollow rectangular slide guide having its top portion fixed to the lower end of said tube,
(F) a downwardly extending foot plate fixed to the bottom portion of said lower hollow rectangular slide guide,
(G) a yielding pressure foot mounted on the lower portion of said foot plate including,
(H) a vertically slidable plunger having,
(I) a rubber floor contacting knob on the lower end of said plunger adapted to engage the floor and (J) a yielding means between said plunger and said foot plate to normally urge said plunger downwardly against the floor surface,
(K) an upper hollow rectangular slide guide fixed at its lower portion to the upper end of said upper rod,
(L) an abutment shaft fixed to the top portion of said upper hollow rectangular slide guide,
(M) a flip dog pivotally mounted to the upper end of said abutment shaft having,
(N) an abutment lug including,
(0) a door header abutment surface and a door engaging abutment surface arranged to be placed alternately in operative position by the flipping of said dog to selected positions on said abutment shaft.
2. A hinge setting apparatus comprising in combinatron:
(A) a frame including,
(B) a lower tube having longitudinally spaced diametrically disposed selectable bores therein,
(C) an upper road telescopically carried in the bore of said tube having a diametrically positioned bore,
(D) a positioning pin arranged to be presented in said selectable bores in said lower tube and said diametrically positioned bore in said upper rod to relatively and positively axially position said rod and tube,
(E) a lower hollow rectangular slide guide having its top portion fixed to the lower end of said tube,
(F) a downwardly extending foot plate fixed to the bottom portion of said lower hollow rectangular slide guide,
(G) a yielding pressure foot mounted on the lower portion of said foot plate including,
(H) a vertically slidable plunger having,
(I) a rubber floor contacting knob on the the lower end of said plunger adapted to engage the floor and (J) a yielding means between said plunger and said foot plate to normally urge said plunger downwardly against the fioor surface,
(K) an upper hollow rectangular slide guide fixed at its lower portion to the upper end of said upper rod,
(L) an abutment shaft fixed to the top portion of said upper hollow rectangular slide guide,
(M) a flip dog pivotally mounted to the upper end of said abutment shaft having,
(N) an abutment lug including,
(0) a door header abutment surface and a door engaging abutment surface arranged to be placed alternately in operative position by the flipping of said dog to selected positions on said abutment shaft,
(P) a drill guide bushing slidably mounted for vertical movement in each of said slide guides,
(Q) and stop surfaces to limit said vertical movement of each of said drill guide bushings to an upper position for forming door hinge portions and to a lower position for forming door jamb portions for hinge setting.

A HINGE SETTING APPARATUS COMPRISING IN COMBINATION: (A) A FRAME INCLUDING, (B) A LOWER TUBE HAVING LONGITUDINALLY SPACED DIAMETRICALLY DISPOSED SELECTABLE BORES THEREIN, (C) AN UPPER ROD TELESCOPICALLY CARRIED IN THE BORE OF SAID TUBE HAVING A DIAMETRICALLY POSITIONED BORE, (D) A POSITIONING PIN ARRANGED TO BE PRESENTED IN SAID SELECTABLE BORES IN SAID LOWER TUBE AND SAID DIAMETRICALLY POSITIONED BORE IN SAID UPPER ROD TO RELATIVELY AND POSITION AXIALLY POSITION SAID ROD AND TUBE, (E) A LOWER HOLLOW RECTANGULAR SLIDE GUIDE HAVING ITS TOP PORTION FIXED TO THE LOWER END OF SAID TUBE, (F) A DOWNWARDLY EXTENDING FOOT PLATE FIXED TO THE BOTTOM PORTION OF SAID LOWER HOLLOW RECTANGULAR SLIDE GUIDE, (G) A YIELDING PRESSURE FOOT MOUNTED ON THE LOWER PORTION OF SAID FOOT PLATE INCLUDING (H) A VERTICALLY SLIDABLE PLUNGER HAVING, (I) A RUBBER FLOOR CONTACTING KNOB ON THE LOWER END OF SAID PLUNGER ADAPTED TO ENGAGE THE FLOOR AND (J) A YIELDING MEANS BETWEEN SAID PLUNGER AND SAID FOOT PLATE TO NORMALLY URGE SAID PLUNGER DOWNWARDLY AGAINST THE FLOOR SURFACE, (K) AN UPPER HOLLOW RECTANGULAR SLIDE GUIDE FIXED AT ITS LOWER PORTION TO THE UPPER END OF SAID UPPER ROD, (L) AN ABUTMENT SHAFT FIXED TO THE TOP PORTION OF SAID UPPER HOLLOW RECTANGULAR SLIDE GUIDE (M) A FLIP DOG PIVOTALLY MOUNTED TO THE UPPER END OF SAID ABUTMENT SHAFT HAVING, (N) AN ABUTMENT LUG INCLUDING, (O) A DOOR HEADER ABUTMENT SURFACE AND A DOOR ENGAGING ABUTMENT SURFACE ARRANGED TO BE PLACED ALTERNATELY IN OPERATIVE POSITION BY THE FLIPPING OF SAID DOG TO SELECTED POSITIONS ON SAID ABUTMENT SHAFT.
