(Cl. 128-288) This invention relates to a baby panty adapted for use in training infants and more specifically to a baby panty having a hydrophobic lining therein.
In the use of baby panties, especially when training an infant, it is desirable to have a baby panty which will absorb and hold moisture created by the infant away from the skin of the infant to prevent skin irritation, etc. caused by excessive moisture in contact with the skin of the infant. Heretofore, baby panties have been provided with thickened crotch port-ions in an attempt to solve the above noted problems. However, these panties have not proved satisfactory inasmuch as they fail to hold the moisture away from the skin of the infant but rather just become saturated with the moisture and thereby do not prevent irritation to the skin of the baby.
It is therefore the object of this invention to provide a baby panty which will wick moisture away from the skin of the wearer and absorb and hold this moisture away from the skin of the wearer.
In accordance with the present invention a baby panty is provided whereby the crotch portion includes a hydrophobic layer disposed for contact with the skin of a baby when the panty is worn and whereby a hydrophilic layer is disposed away from the skin of the wearer when the panty is worn. The hydrophobic layer of the crotch is adapted to draw and wick moisture away from the skin of the wearer and the hydrophilic layer is adapted to absorb and hold the moisture away from the skin of the wearer. By this construction a baby panty is provided which will provide a substantially dry surface in contact with the skin of the infant to prevent irritation.
The preferred form of the baby panty of this invention provides a plurality of layers of hydrophilic material in the crotch portion which have one of the sides of each layer napped and arranged in a novel manner to provide improved moisture holding qualities.
Further features of the present invention will be better understood by reference to the following more detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of the baby panty of this invention;
FIGURE 2 is a front elevational view of the baby panty of FIGURE 1 turned inside out;
FIGURE 3 is a view of the blank layers of material used to form the baby panty of FIGURES 1 and 2 with the layers turned over so that their relative locations may be seen; and
FIGURE 4 is a cross-sectional view of the crotch portion of the baby panty taken substantially along the line 4-4 of FIGURE 1.
Referring now to the drawings there is shown a baby panty, generally indicated by the reference numeral 10, adapted for use in training infants. The baby panty comprises a front portion 11, a back portion 12, a crotch portion 13, leg apertures 14 and '15, and a waist aperture 16.
As may be seen in FIGURE 3, the baby panty 10 is formed by a first layer of material with suitable cutouts 21 and 2-2 therein to form the leg apertures 14 and 15. The first layer of material 20 is superimposed and joined together by lines of stitching 23 and 24 along the side edges thereof to form the front portion 11 and the back portion 12 of the baby panty 10. Binding strips and 26 are placed around the leg apertures 14 and 3,237,625 Patented Mar. 1, 1966 15 and secured to the first layer of material 20 at the cutouts 2'1 and 22 by lines of stitching 30 and 31, respectively.
The waist aperture of the baby panty 10* may be formed by folding over the first layer of material 20 one or more times and locating a strip of elastic therein (not shown) and securing this turned over waist construction by lines of stitching 32.
The crotch port-ion 13 of the baby panty 10 includes the first ply of material 20 on the outside thereof, as may be seen in FIGURE 1. The crotch portion 13 also includes second and third layers of material 3-3 and 34. The layers of material 20, 33 and 34 may be formed of any suitable hydrophilic material, such as cotton, etc. As illustrated therein for the preferred form of this invention, the layers 20, 33 and 34 are shown to be cotton material With one of the sides thereof napped to provide better moisture holding qualities for purposes to be hereinafter described. As noted in FIGURE 3, the first layer 20 has the napped surface inwardly of the panty, the second layer 33 has its napped surface outwardly of the panty in contact with the napped surface of the first layer 20 and the third layer 34 has its napped surface disposed inwardly of the panty.
The crotch portion 13 of the baby panty 10 further includes a layer 35 of hydrophobic material disposed inwardly of the panty and in contact with the layer 34 of hydrophilic material. The layer 35 may be formed of any suitable hydrophobic material, such as cellulose triacetate, polyamide, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, acrylic, modacrylic and polyester fibers.
As may be seen in FIGURE 3, the layers 33, 34 and 35 are of substantially the same configuration and are superimposed on top of each other and on top of the first layer 20. These last mentioned layers also have suitable cutouts 21 and 22 therein to form the leg apertures 14 and 15 in the completed baby panty 10. The layers 3-3, 3-4 and 35 of the crotch portion 13 are secured to the first layer 20 by means of stitching 36 and by binding strips 25 and 26 and stitching 30 and 31 to form a completed baby panty having a crotch portion therein of more layers than the remaining portions of the baby panty.
When placed in position on an infant the hydrophobic layer 35 is adapted to be in contact with the skin of the wearer to draw and wick moisture away from the skin of the wearer and the hydrophilic layers 3-3, 34 and 20 are adapted to be disposed away from the skin of the wearer to absorb and hold the moisture wicked by the hydrophobic layer away from the skin of the wearer.
Thus it may be seen, that a baby panty is provided which is adapted to draw and wick moisture away from the skin of an infant and to absorb and hold this moisture away from the skin of the infant to prevent irritation to the skin of the infant. The provision of a plurality of layers of hydrophilic material with one of the surfaces thereof napped will provide additional moisture holding qualities to absorb and hold a substantial amount of moisture away from the skin of the wearer. However, it is to be understood that while this is the preferred form of baby panty that any number or form of knitted or woven hydrophilic layers may be used in the baby panty as desired.
This invention has been described in detail above for purposes of illustration and is not intended to be limited by this description or otherwise except as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A unitary baby panty adapted for use in training infants comprising a front portion, a rear portion, a thickened crotch portion, leg apertures, and a self-fitting wa-i-st portion, all of said portions having an outer surface of textile material and being permanently secured together to form a self-sustaining panty which may be easily slipped on and off of an infant without the necessity of pinning or the like, said thickened crotch portion comprising a crotch shaped layer of porous hydrophobic material and a plurality of layers of hydrophilic material superimposed on and in contact with each other and with said layer of hydrophobic material, said panty being adapted when worn to have said crotch shaped layer of hydrophobic material in contact with the skin of the wearer in the crotch area to draw and wick moisture away from the skin of the wearer and to have said layers of hydrophilic material disposed away from the skin of the wearer to absorb and hold the moisture away from the skin of the wearer.
2. A baby panty, as set forth in claim 1, in which said hydrophil-ic material is napped to provide better moisture holding qualities.

Claims (1)

1. A UNITARY BABY PANTY ADAPTED FOR USE IN TRAINING INFANTS COMPRISING A FRONT PORTION, A REAR PORTION, A THICKENED CROTCH PORTION, LEG APERTURES, AND A SELF-FITTING WAIST PORTION, ALL OF SAID PORTIONS HAVING AN OUTER SURFACE OF TEXTILE MATERIAL AND BEING PERMANENTLY SECURED TOGETHER TO FORM A SELF-SUSTAINING PANTY WHICH MAY BE EASILY SLIPPED ON AND OFF OF AN INFANT WITHOUT THE NECESSITY OF PINNING OR THE LIKE, SAID THICKENED CROTCH PORTION COMPRISING A CROTCH SHAPED LAYER OF POROUS HYDROPHOBIC MATERIAL AND A PLURALITY OF LAYERS OF HYDROPHILIC MATERIAL SUPERIMPOSED ON AND IN CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH SAID LAYER OF HYDROPHOBIC MATERIAL, SAID PANTY BEING ADAPTED WHEN WORN TO HAVE SAID CROTCH SHAPED LAYER OF HYDROPHOBIC MATERIAL IN CONTACT WITH THE SKIN OF THE WEARER IN THE CROTCH AREA TO DRAW AND WICK MOISTURE AWAY FROM THE SKIN OF THE WEARER AND TO HAVE SAID LAYERS OF HYDROPHILIC MATERIAL DISPOSED AWAY FROM THE SKIN OF THE WEARER TO ABSORB AND HOLD THE MOISTURE AWAY FROM THE SKIN OF THE WEARER.
