(Cl. 40-2) The present invention relates to a label and cover sheet assembly comprised of a backing having a release coating on at least one side, a transparent cover sheet having a pressure sensitive adhesive on its under surface and a release coating on its upper surface and adhered to said release coated liner, and a label having a pressure sensitive adhesive on its under surface and-having its front surface adapted to receive marking, said label being adhered to the release coating on said transparent cover sheet by means of its pressure sensitive adhesive.

In the past labels with pressure sensitive adhesive coatings and transparent cover sheets with pressure sensitive adhesive coatings on their under sides have been independently located on different portions of a release coated backing, as is shown, for example, in Patent No. 2,953,865. Such label assemblies have the disadvantage that when the assembly was placed in a typewriter or on some supportrn g surface for marking, the face of the transparent cover sheet rubbed against the supporting surface or typewriter roll and became scratched, marred and smudged due to dirt and roughness on the supporting surface or the typewriter roll. Hence, when the protective cover sheet was placed over the label on the article to be labeled, it sometimes gave a messy appearance to the label, or even made the label difiicult to read. However, according to 'the' present invention, by first coating the upper surface of the cover sheet with a release coating, it is feasible to mount the label on top of the cover sheet on the backing so that during the marking operation I protected by the label itself. Hence, when the label is applied to the object being labeled, the cover sheet provides a clear, clean and unmarred protective WlIldOW through which the label may easily be read.

In addition to the foregoing advantages, a label assembly of the present invention also presents a label and cover sheet on a backing to a consumer in a compact, attractive and convenient form, in the order in which the elements are used. No additional backing material is required to support the label and the cover sheet side by side as in some assemblies known to the prior art. There is no need for the consumer to turn to both sides of the backing material to find the label and cover sheet. Instead, according to the present invention the label and cover sheet are stacked on one side of the backing with the label on top, ready for immediate use, and in a form readily adaptable for use with a conventional type of continuous tape dispenser. Finally, the assembly of the present invention may be produced from prearranged layers of label cover sheet and backing material by a simple singleaction, single-side die cutting machine.

Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a label and transparent cover sheet assembly whereby the transparent cover sheet is fully protected against dirt and scratches until it is ready for use.

It is another object of. the present invention to provide a label and transparent cover sheet assembly wherein the transparent cover sheet bears an indentation in the shape of the periphery of the label to facilitate centering said transparent cover sheet on said label.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a label and cover sheet assembly that can be produced by a single-action, single-side die cutting operation. 4

The foregoing and other objects will appear in the description to follow. In the description, reference is made to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof and in which there is shown by way of illustration a specific embodiment in which this invention may be practiced. This embodiment will be described in sufficient detail to enable those skilled in the art to practice this invention, but it is to be understood that other embodiments of the invention may be used and that structural changes may be made in the embodiment described without departing from the scope of the invention. Consequently, the following detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense; instead, the scope of the present invention is best defined by the appended claims.

Referring now specifically to the drawings, FIG. 1 shows an exploded view in perspective of the present invention, including 'a sheet of backing material 1, which may be of paper, glassine or similar mate-rial with a release coating on at least its upper surface. The backing 1 is severed in half along the line 2, so that in the embodiment shown the backing 1 is actually made up of two sheets 3 and 4. Just above the backing 1 is a transparent cover sheet 5. The cover sheet 5 may be made from any transparent or translucent film material, and in the present embodiment Mylar is used. The underside of the Mylar cover sheet 5 is coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive 6, as can be seen in FIG. 3, and the top side of the transparent cover sheet 5 has an appropriate release coating on it. Above the cover sheet 5 of FIG. 1 is a label 7. The label 7 may be' of any suitable material, but in the present embodiment it is made of paper, and its underside is coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive 8 while its upper surface is adapted to receive a mark, such as typing, or pencil or the like.

An indentation 9 is formed in the cover sheet 5.corresponding to the periphery of the label 7 so as to facilitate the centering of the cover sheet 5 over the label 7 when the label 7 and cover sheet 5 are put into use. Label assemblies embodying the present invention may be sold in the convenient form.of a continuous tape backing 1 l or perforation line 10 to facilitate separation of the individual assemblies.

To use the label assemblies of the present invention/the desired information may be marked on the label 7, and then the labels 7 may be removed from the assembly and secured to the object (not shown) to be labeled by means of the pressure-sensitive adhesive 8 on the back'of the label 7. Next, the transparent cover sheet 5 may be removed from the backing 1, by removing one-half 3 or 4 of the backing 1 and adhering the exposed portion of the adhesive 6 on the cover 5 over the label 7 and then peeling away the remaining half 4 or 3 of the backing 1 and pressing the cover sheet 5 over the label 7 so that the indentation 9 in the cover sheet 5 coincides with the periphery of the label 7.

As a result of the present invention, a very convenient label assembly is provided. The elements of the assembly are presented to the user in the order in which they would be needed in normal use of the labels, all on the same side of the backing 5. A neater finished label is provided since the cover sheet 5 is protected from scratching and smudging by virtue of its position on the top of the backing 1 and beneath the label before it is put into use. Also, as a result of the present invention it is necessary to release coat only the topside of the backing 1 and the entire label assembly may be die cut from juxtaposed layers of material by a single action, single side cutting machine. Hence, by virtue of the present invention, a more convenient label assembly resulting in a label of improved appearance is provided at a reduced cost.

I claim:

1. A label and transparent cover sheet assembly comprising the combination of a liner sheet having a release coating on at least one surface;

a transparent cover sheet having a pressure sensitive adhesive on its under surface, being adhered by said pressure sensitive adhesive to said release surface of said liner, and having a release coating on its upper surface;

and a label having a pressure-sensitive adhesive on its under surface, being adhered by said pressure-sensitive adhesive to said release coated upper surface of said transparent cover sheet, and having its outer surface adapted to receive a marking.

2. A label and transparent cover sheet assembly comprising the combination of a liner strip having a release coating on at least one surface;

a transparent cover sheet being embossed in the shape of a label, having its upper surface release coated, and having a pressure-sensitive adhesive on its under surface whereby it is adhered .to said release surface on said liner;

and a label having its upper surface adapted to receive a marking, and having its lower surface coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive whereby it is adhered to said release coated upper surface of said transparent cover sheet.
