GEORGE F. SEAVER AND.OHARLES G. MORK, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
TOOL FOR PIERCING HOLES IN SOLES OF BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,160, dated September 15, 1885. Application filed June 21, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.- I
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. SEAVER and CHARLES G. MORK, citizens of the United States, residlng at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new Tool for Piercing Holes in the Soles of Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates particularly tothat class of tools or awls used for punching or piercing holes for the reception of wearing tacks or nails, and which are usually put in In the accompanying drawings,in the different figures of which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 isa perspective view looking atthe under side of the de- Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale, showing howthe awls are secured in place. Fig. 4 is a detail illustrating the preferred construction of awl.
The letter A designates a block of wood or other material having the outline of the sole of the shoe or boot in which it is desired to place the wearing tacks or nails.
B is a similarly-shaped block, which is provided with a number of perforations, preferably arranged according to some design. Each of these holes is so made as to receive and hold an awl, which may be constructed with a cylindrical head, a, a shoulder, 12, and a conical or other sharp point, 0. The cylindrical head a fits the correspondingly shaped hole or socket in the securing-plate B. The plate B is preferably secured to the block Aby means 40 of screws d, which pass through the said plate and enter the block A, all as. clearly seen in Fig. 2.
To the upper side of the block A we secure a handle, 0.
To use the tool the handle is grasped and the device fitted against asole, when by a blow of a mallet or hammer against the end of the handle the awls are driven into the sole, and the perforations necessary to receive the nails thus provided.
It is evident that any design whatsoever may be used in which to arrange the nails or tacks. It will also be understood that instead of usingthe handleOwe can attach the device 5 to a suitable press to secure the desired press- IUP.
We are aware that it is not broadly new to provide a block having the contour of a boot or shoe sole with aseries of piercing-awls; but
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a tool, substantially as shown and described, the combination, with the block having the outline of a sole or heel, of a similar- 65 shaped block provided with awls having the cylindrical heads a, shoulders b,and the piercing end or point a, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
