(No ModeLj J, ADAMS. GRM/'AT PASTENBR. No. 327,216. Patented Sept. 29, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

JOHN ADAMS, OF MONTROSE, COLORADO.

CRAVAT-FASTEN ER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,216, dated 'September 29, 1885.

Application filed May 19, 1855.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN ADAMS, of Montrose, in the county of Montrose and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Oravat-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cravat-fastener, which permits the cravat to be quickly and securely attached to the collar` button or stud, and easily removed from the same When desired.

The invention consists of a piece of rubber 'or other elastic material having an opening With radial slits extending from the saine attached to the shield of a cravat, so that the collar button or stud may be pressed through the said opening, and will secure the cravatin place.

Reference is to be had to theacconipanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a cravat provided With my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line x x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a. rear elevation of a modified form of the same.

A indicates a cravat provided on its back with the ordinary shield B, made of cardboard or other suitable material. The shield B is attached to the cravat A in any convenient manner, so that an opening, a, is left bee tween the shield and the cravat in order that the fastener may be adjusted on the collar button or stud. An aperture, O, is provided in the center of the shield B. A piece of rubber or other elastic material, D, is secured to the shield B over the aperture C. It :is a oonvenient method to fasten the piece D between (No model.)

the two layers or plates Zi and b of the shield B, as shown in Fig. 2. The piece D is formed with an aperture, E` and radial slits F, of any desired number. and having perforations G at their outer ends in order to prevent the eX- tension of the said slits by tearing beyond a point of termination to depend upon the size of the stud or button to be used. The aperture E coincides with the aperture O in the shield B.

ln the drawings, the fastener is shown attached to an ordinary silk bow; but the device is of course applicable to any form of neckwear.

The operation is as follows: The aperture E is brought over the head of the collar button or stud, the thumb of the left hand being pressed against the base of the stud, the forefinger of the right hand inserted in the opening a between the cravat and shield, can readily press the head of the stud or button through the opening E, and fasten the cravat in place.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the perf rations G are dispensed with, and only the aperture and radial slits in the elast-ic material are employed.

Having thus described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a omvat-fastener, the combination, `with the shield B, having the aperture C and the opening a, of the piece D, formed with an aperture, E, radial slits F, and perfortions G, and secured to the shield B, substantially as shown and described.

JOHN ADAMS.
