Description

p 1966 F. s. CARAVELLA ROLL SUPPORT MOUNTINGS Filed Aug. 9, 19 5 Ill 7 INVENTOR FRANK S. CARAVELLA ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,272,448 ROLL SUPPORT MOUNTINGS Frank S. Caravella, 4321 N. 13th St., Milwaukee, Wis. Filed Aug. 9, 1965, Ser. No. 478,060 4 Claims. (Cl. 242--55.2)
My invention relates ot roll support mountings, and more particularly to a device for mounting the toilet paper roll support taught in my United States Patents Nos. 3,138,340 and 3,180,586.
The prime object of my invention is to provide a device that is extremely simple, and acts as the support for one end of the coil spring, for retaining the roll of toilet paper.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device that will adjust itself automatically for frictional contact with the inner surface of a standard adaptor, on a conventional toilet paper support.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a simple inexpensive device that may be applied by anyone Without mechanical skill, or the use of special tools.
It is manifest to anyone familiar with replacing a roll of toilet paper, into a conventional holder, that by using a pliable coil spring to support the roll, no part of the assembly need be removed, and it is the prime object of my invention to provide a means rigidly supporting one end of the coil spring which supports the roll of toilet paper, or the like.
The device constituting my invention is a self contained assembled unit, that may be applied as an individual unit.
Other further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, when taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an enlarged front view of the sheet metal nut equipped with a plurality of outwardly extending members and an opening disposed centrally therein;
FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view of the nut shown in FIG. 1, and taken at the line 2-2 therein;
FIGURE 3 is a similar view taken at the line 33 in FIG. 1;
FIGURE 4 is a vertical cross-section of the assembled mounting, with the nut shown in position as in FIG. 3;
FIGURE 5 is a similar view of the mounting, with the nut shown in position as in FIG. 2;
FIGURE 6 is a top view of an assembled toilet paper support using my invention to support the spring on one end, and in a normal operating position; and
FIGURE 7 is a similar view as shown in FIG. 6, with the roll of toilet paper shown in phantom as being inserted onto the coil spring support.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to the same, the character 10 shows a sheet metal nut, having a centrally disposed aperture 11, equipped with an outwardly extending slot shown as 12, which permits a radial formation shown as the tongue 13 when contacted by a thread.
The outer periphery of the washer, or nut 10, is equipped with a plurality of individual members spaced apart from one another by inwardly extending cut-out slots 14.
The plurality of individual members consist of three angularly shaped engaging members shown as 15, arranged at 120 in their relation to one another, three angularly shaped members 16 also arranged at 120 in their relation to one another and extending outwardly in opposite direction from the members 15, and six pointed members 17 disposed between the members 15 and 16, and bent at an angle in the direction of the members 15. All the members 15, 16 and 17 are separated from one another by the slots 14, as shown.
3,272,448 Patented Sept. 13, 1966 The attaching unit shown generally as 18 (see FIGS. 4 and 5), consists of a threaded portion 19 spirally recessed at 20, to accommodate the tapered end of the spirally wound spring 21, a flange portion 22 recessed radially at 23, and a threaded bolt type portion 24. The portions 19, 22 and 24 constituting the unit 18 are integrally constructed to form the unit 18.
The function of the attaching unit 18 is to engage the radial recess, or cavity 25, on one projecting support 26 of a conventional toilet paper support shown as 27 (see FIGS. 6 and 7).
In applying my device constituting my invention, it is only necessary to insert the washer, or nut 10, into the recess or cavity 25 in the support 26 forming a part of the conventional toilet paper holder 27, and after the spring 21 is applied to the spirally threaded portion 19 of the attaching unit 18, the threaded bolt type portion 24 engages the aperture 11 of the washer 10, and the slot 12 will permit the tongue portion 13 to assume the contour of the threads on the outer face of the bolt type portion 24, and as the entire unit 18 is revolved by manual means, the screw portion 24, will cause the members 15 to engage the circular recess 23, the angular members 16 to engage the inner surface wall of the cavity 25, and the pointed members 17 to contact the bevel edge 28 of the member 22, and the further the bolt assembly 18 is screwed into the washer 10, the tighter the members 15, 16 and 17 will wedge into the cavity 25 for the support of the spring 21 to support the roll of toilet paper shown in phantom as 29 (see FIGS. 6 and 7).
The device is simple in construction and positive in its function, and although I have shown a specific construction and arrangement of the parts, I am fully cognizant of the fact that many changes may be made in the form, shape and configuration of the parts and their arrangement without effecting the operativeness of the device, and I reserve the rights to make such changes as I may deem convenient, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States, is:
1. A sheet metal nut for associating the recess of a toilet paper holder with an attaching unit for a spirally wound spring that supports toilet paper, said attaching unit including a threaded portion for association with said spring member and a flange portion having a threaded portion, said flange portion being sized to engage the recess of said toilet paper holder and being sized to be held in operable position with respect to said toilet paper holder when the sheet metal nut is threadedly associated therewith, said recess having a bottom and ends defining the opening of said recess, said sheet metal nut comprising: a central aperture for operable association of said nut with said threaded portion of said flange portion, a plurality of outwardly extending engaging members including first engaging members, second engaging members and third engaging members, said firs-t members extending outward and in one direction and being interposed between said attaching member and said recess to cause a friction fit therebetween when said nut is operably associated with said flange, said second engaging members extending outward and in an opposite direction to said first engaging members to frictionally abut against said recess when said nut is operatively associated with said flange, and said third attaching members extending outward and conforming to the contour of said flange when said nut is operatively associated with said flange, whereby said attaching member engages said recess for rigid association when said metal nut is operatively associated with said recess.
. 3 4 2. A sheet metal nut, as defined in claim 1, wherein into locking relationship with said threaded portion of said said first engaging members extend toward the opening flange portion.
of said recess and the ends of said first engaging members being angularly shaped for interposition between said References Cited by the Examiner flange and said ends defining said opening of said recess. 5 UNITED STATES PATENTS 3. A sheet metal nut, as defined in claim 1, wherein 2 1 9 399 1939 Steiner 242 55.53 said second engaging members extend toward the bottom 3 034 739 5 /1962 Barger 242 3 4 of said recess. 3,138,340 6/1964 Caravella 24255.2
4. A sheet metal nut, as defined in claim 1, wherein said nut has a tongue portion extending therefrom and 10 MERVIN STEIN Primary Examine"- being flexible to enable the end thereof to be positioned L. D. CHRISTIAN, Assistant Examiner.
