No. 504,908 1 Claim. (Cl. 108-461) This invention relates to Workbenches of general utility, and more particularly to a slotted top work bench.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a slotted top work bench having an elongated slot for accommodating large pieces of plywood.
Another object of this invention is to provide a slotted top work bench which has low elevation from the ground thereby conveniently permitting one to saw pieces of wood.
Another object of this invention is to provide a slotted top work bench which can double as a low step ladder.
Another object of this invention is to provide a slotted top work bench which can be located within a limited amount of space.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a slotted top work bench which is easy to construct and provides maximum utility to the user.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the invention is shown. However, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the details disclosed but includes all such variations and modifications as fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.

FIGURE 2 shows a bottom view of this invention.
According to this invention, slotted top work bench 10 includes a rectangular table top 11, preferably made of wood. An elongated slot 12 centrally positioned within said table top for admitting plywood of various sizes therein. Panels 16 secured to each side of table top 11 and having their sides extending downwardly, thereby being capable of admitting L-shaped legs 13 within the corners 18 formed by panels 16. Corner braces 15 are provided for legs 13 thereby providing additional support to legs 13. One end of braces 15 are connected to the inside of L-shaped angles of legs 13 and the other side of said braces being connected to the inside portion of downward panels 16. It should be noted that each leg is provided with tow braces 15 thereby adding supplemental support to these legs when heavy pieces of wood are located within elongated slot 12 of the table top 11.
Looking now at FIGURE 2 of the drawing, one will see that steel frame 17 is provided to support the wooden table top 11. This frame consists of elongated steel strips positioned at the longitudinal portions of panels 16 and being secured by welding or any other means to lateral steel strips 19 which completely reinforce table top 11. In addition, in order to provide ultimate support for plywood inserted within the elongated slot 12, a pair of steel strips 20 is provided on each side of said slot. The last mentioned strips 20 are also secured to lateral strips 19 by any accepted means.
It will also be noted that elongated slot on table top 11 of this invention does not have to be necessarily positioned longitudinally but also may be located in a lateral or any other position. It is also pointed out that legs 13 are preferably short thus permitting slotted top work bench 10 to be positioned low to the ground, thereby making it easier to saw off pieces of plywood secured within the elongated slot 12.
What I now claim is:
A slotted top work bench comprising, in combination, a table top, which includes a plurality of downwardly positioned panels secured to each side of said table top, a steel frame of a rectangular configuration secured to the bottom portion of said table top, said table top being pro vided wtih an elongated slot for holding and securing a work piece within said work bench, a pair of elongated steel strips on each side of said slot spaced from each other in a parallel relationship and abutting the lateral end extensions of said steel frame, a plurality of legs provided at each corner .portion of said table top, each leg abutting the perpendicularly disposed mating portions of said panels, and a pair of angularly positioned elongated panels secured to the inner portions of said downwardly positioned panels and each of said legs being supported by at least a pair of said angularly positioned panels.
