A. P. SOHEURMAN.
EXERGISING DEVICE FOR MUSICIANS. No. 332,290. Patented Dec. 15, 1885.
witnesses. 6947M lm enior v UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
AUGUST 1?. SGHEURMAN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
EXERCISING DEVICE FOR MUSICIANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 332,290, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed March 9, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUeUsT P. SoHEUR- MAN, of the city of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Organists and Pianists Exercising Device, which is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 shows the application of the invention.
In each of said figures, O is a metal cylinder or tube of sufficient diameter to slip easily over the hand, flattened at the front end on both sides, as shown. (See letter A.) Said tube is made heavier at the bottom B, so that the lower half is of greater weight than the upper half. It is made of various sizes and weights suitable to the age and physical strength of students. The end E to rest over the wrist has on its lower half a recess, as indicated by letter D, to prevent the device striking the keys or the instrument when in use. The thickness and length of the tube depends upon the weight desired, approximately from one-eighth of an inch to one inch of average thickness.
To use this device, it is slipped over the hand onto the forearm, the end E resting over the wrist, the flattened sides A, tapering toward the wrist, aiding in keeping it in place. Thus equipped the student practices at the organ or piano.
The object of this invention is to facilitate and develop superior flexibility and strength ofihe fingers, wrists, and arms, the object of Serial No. 158,123. (No model.)
organ and piano technics being to develop flexibility and strength of execution, so that the most rapid and powerful passages of music may be rendered with the greatest possible ease and taste. In order to attain this the endurance of the ligaments and muscles 'of the hands and forearms must be increased far beyond their original natural state.
This invention, by imposing a greater task and necessitating greater exertion on the part of the student, will carry his ability of execution farbeyond actual requirements. When his powers have been brought to the capability of carrying this additional weight, his work will be comparatively easy when playing without the exercising device.
The invention can be made of various substances-such as the various metals, glass, or burned clay-according to the weight and appearance desired. Other shapes may also be used. It can be plated or covered or lined with various kinds of materials.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, an exercising device for musicians, consisting of a cylinder of described construction having fiattened sides on one end thereof, with a recess on the bottom thereof at the same end, substantially as shown and described.
AUGUST P. SGHEURMAN.
