Michigan St., Indianapolis, Ind. 46202 Filed Sept. 20,1963, Ser. No. 310,335 1 Claim. (Cl. 229-68) The present invention relates to an envelope for receiving a phonograph record.
Referring to FIGS. 4 and 5 of the drawing, it has been accomplished in phonograph record packaging to line a paper envelope with polyethylene film. This is desirable because the film is soft and non-abrasive and shields the record from the abrasive outer paper of the envelope. The polyethylene film is secured to one face of the paper 11 as shown in FIG. 4 which is folded to place the film 10 inside the envelope 12 as shown in FIG. 5. In order to make the envelope 12 neat in appearance, the polyethylene film is spaced from the edge of the portions 15 and 16 so that the paper flaps 17 can be glued to the portion 15 by glue 20. Such an arrangement does not completely shield the record from the abrasive paper because the surfaces 21 and 22 are not covered by film and are available to contact the record.
Consequently, an important object of the present invention is to provide an envelope for receiving a phonograph record or the like, said envelope being completely lined with a non-abrasive coating.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved envelope for a phonograph record.
Related objects and advantages will become apparent as the description proceeds.l
One embodiment of the present invention includes an envelope comprising a sheet of paper including a first rectangular portion and a second rectangular portion foldably connected thereto, said rectangular portions being foldably connected with one of the four sides of one of said rectangular portions connected to one of the four sides of the other of said rectangular portions, said one rectangular portion having a pair of fiaps foldably connected thereto, one flap of said pair of flaps being connected to a second of the four sides of said one rectangular lportion, the other fiap of said pair of flaps being connected to a third of the four sides of said one rectangular portion, a polyethylene film secured to one face of said sheet of paper coextensive with said first and second rectangular portions and overlapping a portion of said flaps, said sheet of paper being folded along said foldable connection with the polyethylene film on the inside, said iiaps embracing said other rectangular portion and glued to the other face thereof to provide three closed sides for the envelope and a completely film lined inside thereof.

of the invention is thereby intended, such alterations and further modifications in the illustrated device, and such further applications of the principles of the invention as illustrated therein being contemplated as would normally occur to one skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
Referring more particularly to FIGS. 1-3, there is illustrated a sheet of paper 30 which includes a first rectangular portion 31 and a second rectangular portion 32 foldably connected to the first rectangular'portion along the line 35. Each of the rectangular portions 31 -and 32 has a circular opening 36 therethrough which serves as a window making visible the title on the phonograph record adjacent the axis thereof.
The sheet of paper 30 further includes a pair of flaps 37. One of the fiaps 37 is connected to and extends completely along the side 40 of the rectangular portion 32 while the other fiap 37 extends completely `along and is connected to the side 41 of the rectangular portion 32. It will be noted that the flaps are contiguous to the side 35 of the rectangular portion 32 and are contiguous to the portion 31 of the sheet of paper 30. In other words, there is no spacing between the fiaps 37 and the portion 31 for a reason that will be evident below.
Secured to one face of the piece of paper 30 is a polyethylene film 42. The polyethylene film is coextensive with the portions 31 and 32 and overlaps a portion of the flaps 37.
In order to assemble the envelope of FIGS. 1-3, the piece of paper 30 is folded along the line or edge 35 with the polyethylene film 42 inward to the position shown in FIG. 3. The flaps 37 are then glued to the face 45 of the portion 31. Because of the fact that the polyethylene film 42 slightly overlaps the flaps 37 with the overlapping .portion 46, the entire inner surface of the resulting enent invention provides an envelope for receiving a phonol graph record or the like, said envelope being completely lined with a non-abrasive coating.
While the invention has been illustrated and described in detail in the drawings and foregoing description, the same is to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive in character, it being understood that only the preferred embodiment has been shown and described and that all changes and modifications that come within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claim are also desired to be protected.
The invention claimed is:
An envelope comprising a sheet of paper including a first rectangular portion and a second rectangular portion foldably connected thereto; said second rectangular portion having a pair of flaps foldably connected thereto; a film of plastic secured to one face of said sheet of paper covering said first and second rectangular portion, and overlapping a portion of said flaps; said sheet of paper being folded along said foldable connection with the film on the inside; said flaps embracing said first rectangular portion and secured to the other face thereof to provide Vthree closed sides for the envelope and a completely film lined inside thereof; said film also embracing said first rectangular portion, said film including a first film portion covering said first paper rectangular portion and coextensive therewith, a second film portion covering said second paper rectangular portion and coextensive therewith and third lrn portions overlapping a portion of said aps, said third filrn portions and said first lm portion 'are folded relative to each other and define pockets; said second lrn portion being entirely flat and unfolded and having edges received at and Within the folds connecting said rst lrn portion and said third lm portions; said lrn covering only a portion of said flaps leaving a further portion of said flaps uncovered; land adhesive securing the uncovered portions of said flaps directly to the other face of the first rectangular portion; said rst and second ilrn portions being disconnected from one another at two of the three closed sides of the envelope whereby said envelope can receive `a record extending all the Way to the edges of said rectangular portions.
