UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR C. MACKENZIE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FILE-HOLDER.
EBPECIIICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336.577, dated February 23, 1886.
7 Application filed February 12, 1884. Serial No. 120,463. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR C. IVIAOKENZIE, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Holders, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvement in file-holders; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and arrangement, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View; Fig. 2, a plan, and Figs. 3 and 4 are details of my fileholder.
A represents a box or holder of an ordinary and well-known form, such as are usually used in connection with a series of indexed separating-sheets removably fixed therein, between which the letters and bills are placed in their proper order. These separating-sheets are also used in this case, butare so well known as not to need illustration in this connection. The inner side of the back of the box A at either end I form with a groove, a, in which is placed a metal box or casing, 11, having a narrow slot, b, down its front side, for a purpose presently seen.
The frame or holder B which serves to retain the contents of the box in place, I prefer to form of wire, as represented, having rearwardly-extending arms B, which are T-headed on their inner ends, as at b, this T-head being retained in the boxing b, as represented in Fig. 1.
Across the frame B at any suitable place are secured two latch-rods, C C, which have their inner ends near the middle of the box turned at right angles and form small handles 0 c, by which they can be drawn together. One of these rods has secured upon it a small sleeve, C, in the opposite end of which the end of the other latch-rod is loosely held, the handles 0 a passing through a slot, 0, in the side of the sleeve, as shown. Vithin the sleeve C is a spiral spring, 0, which tends to throw the rods apart. The outer ends of the rods engage with the ratchet-plates D D, secured to the inner sides of the box.
The holding-frame is lifted by simply pressing the latches C C together, and thus releasing them from contact with the plates, the holding-frame being then lifted or turned back, and the inner ends slide down to the bottom of the grooves in which they lie, and thus less of the frame is exposed, and it is held in a raised position lying behind the contents of the box. When the papers are to be secured, it is only necessary to press down the frame B, which is secured at any point upon the face of the ratchet-plate, and its inner end rises and falls freely to accommodate itself to the quantity of papers to be held in place.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
In a file-holder, a holding-frame having T- headed arms on its rear side, and provided at In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
