(Cl. 229-87) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An ornamental wrapping having a body of relatively stiff cardboard having scored fold lines which define its top, side, bottom, and end tab portions and an overlay sheet extending about the body piece and secured to peripheral edge portions of the body piece, the overlay sheet being tensioned at the fold lines of the body piec as the body piece is folded to form a wrapping.
This invention relates to wrappings and more particularly to a preformed ornamental wrapping.
An object of this invention is to provide a new and improved ornamental wrapping which is easily assembled without the necessity of employing cord, adhesive tapes and the like.
Another object is to provide a new and ornamental wrapping which is easily and quickly foldable about a box by a person who does not have to be skilled or trained in wrapping boxes.
Another object is to provide a wrapping which is preformed and is flat for easy transport and storage of the wrappings in substantial quantities.
Still another object is to provide an ornamental wrapping having a planar body piece, on one surface of which peripheral strip or layer of adhesive is disposed and an ornamental overlay sheet covering the other surface of the body piece and having peripheral portions overlapping the edges of the body piece and secured thereto by means of said adhesive layer.
Still another object is to provide an ornamental Wrapping wherein the peripheral overlapping portions of the ornamental overlay sheet do not cover inner portions of the adhesive layer whereby when the wrapping is assembled, the adhesive layer secures adjacent abutting portions of the wrapping to one another.
A further object is to provide an ornamental wrapping wherein the body piece is formed of relatively stiff cardboard having scored fold lines which define a top panel, side panels, two bottom panel sections, and end tab portions which extend from opposite ends of the panels and panel sections whereby the wrapping is easily foldable at the fold lines to form a hollow container.
A still further object is to provide a wrapping wherein the overlay sheet is tensioned at the fold lines of the body piece to provide a smooth outwardly curved appearance to the wrapping.
A still further object is to provide a wrapping having an ornamental tape or ribbon extending about the overlay sheet and having end portions which overlap the body piece and are secured to the adhesive layer.
Another object is to provide an ornamental wrapping having protective strips covering and secured to the exposed portions of the adhesive layer.
Still another object is to provide a wrapping wherein the protective strips each have one free end portion by means of which the protective strip may be easily removed to expose the portions of the adhesive layer covered thereby.
Still another object is to provide an ornamental wrapping which can be stored in flat condition and easily wrapped about and secured to a container or box.

FIGURE 6 is a plan view of the wrapping, with some parts broken away, showing the peripheral portions of the overlay sheet lapped over the edges of the body piece and secured thereto by the adhesive layer;
FIGURE 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of the wrapping showing the manner in which the protective strips are secured to the wrapping;
FIGURE 8 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the panels and end tabs of the wrapping are folded over the box; and

The ornamental wrapping 1t embodying the invention includes a body sheet 11 of a somewhat stiff substance, such as cardboard, and an overlay sheet 12 whose outer surface may have a desired color or pattern imprinted thereon or have a metallic colored coating or finish. The overlay sheet is quite thin and flexible.
The body piece is divided by transverse scored fold lines 14, 15, 16 and 17 into a bottom panel section 18, a side panel 19, a top panel 24%, a side panel 21 and a bottom panel section 22. A pair of longitudinal scored fold lines 24 and 25 of the body piece at the opposite ends of the panels define the end tabs 18a and 18b of the bottom panel section 18, the end tabs 19a and 19b of the side panel 19, the end tabs 20a and 20b of the top panel 20, the end tabs 21:: and 21b of the side panel 21, and the end tabs 22a and 22b of the bottom panel section 22.
The end tabs 18a and 13b have inwardly extending edges 26 and 27 which with the adjacent edges 28 and 29 of the end tabs 19a and 19b define outwardly opening recesses or slots 30 and 31 of the body piece. Similarly the end tabs 22a and 22b of the other bottom panel section having extending edges 33 and 34 which with the adjacent edges 35 and 36 of the end tabs 21a and 21b of the side panel 21 define slots 38 and 39, respectively.
The end tab 20a of the top panel has outwardly convergent edges 41 and 42 which with the adjacent edges 43 and 44 of the end tabs 19a and 21a define slots 45 and 46, respectively.
The other end tab 2% of the top panel 20 similarly has outwardly convergent side edges 51 and 52 which together with the adjacent edges 53 and 54 of the side panel end tabs 1% and 21b define outwardly opening slots 55 and 56, respectively. The slots facilitate the folding of the end tabs over the ends 57 and 58 of the rectangular container or box 69 which the ornamental wrapping is preformed to cover.
The peripheral edge portions of the inner surface of the body piece have a strip layer 62 of pressure sensitive adhesive applied thereto. The strip layer covers outer peripheral portions of the inner surfaces of the body piece.
The overlay sheet is of somewhat greater dimensions than the body piece 11 so that when the body piece is laid on the inner surface of the overlay sheet, as illustrated in FIGURES 4 and 5, the longitudinal peripheral portions 64 and 65 of the overlay sheet extend outwardly of the end tabs of the body piece and the transverse end portions 66 and 67 of the overlay sheet extend outwardly of the bottom panel sections 18 and 22, respectively. These peripheral portions of the overlay sheet are bent upwardly and then inwardly and downwardly to overlap the peripheral portions of the body piece and are then secured thereto by the pressure sensitive adhesive. The widths of the peripheral or overlap portions of the overlay sheet are substantially smaller than the width of the adhesive slip layer so that inner portions of the adhesive layer are still exposed.
The overlay sheet has gusset sections 81, 82, 83 and 84 which span the slots 29, 45, 46 and 38, respectively, of the body piece and are defined by the edges of the end tabs 18a, 19a, 20a, 21a and 22a, respectively. The gusset sheet has similar gusset sections 85, 86, 87 and 89 which span the slots 30, 55, 56 and 39, respectively, defined by the edges of the end tabs 18b, 19b, 20b, 21b and 22b, respectively. During the folding in of the end tabs during the assembly of the ornamental wrapping on a box, the gusset portions of the overlay sheet, which is relatively thin and flexible, easily fold at and abut the edges of the end tabs which define the slots after the peripheral portions of the overlay strip are overlapped and secured to the body piece.
An ornamental ribbon or tape 70 may be secured to the wrapping by placing it below the overlay sheet and overlapping its end portion 71 and 72 over the end portions 66 and 67 of the overlay sheet and into adhesive engagement with the adhesive layer. The exposed portions of the strip are then covered by the longitudinal protective strips 74 and 75 and the end protective strips 76 and 77. The protective strips are so arranged that one free end portion of each protective strip overlies an end portion of an adjacent protective strip and is not secured to the adhesive layer. For example, as seen in FIGURE 10, one free end portion 77a of the end protective strip 77 extends over the adjacent end portion 75b of the longitudinal protective strip 75 and in turn the other end portions 77b of the transverse end protective strip 77 which is secured to the adhesive strip is overlaid by the end portion 74a of the longitudinal protective strips 74. As a result the end portions of the protective strips may be easily grasped to facilitate removal of the protective strips.
The wrap is placed on a flat supporting surface, such as that provided on the table, with its overlay sheet resting on the table and the inner surface of the body piece facing upwardly as illustrated in FIGURE 6. The protective strips are then easily removed by means of their free end portions to expose the portions of the adhesive layer which are disposed inwardly of the overlapped peripheral portions of the overlay sheet.
The ornamental wrapping may thus be easily transported and stored in a flat condition with the adhesive layer or strip concealed or protected so that a relatively large number of the ornamental wrappings may easily occupy a relatively small space. The wrappings may be preformed to be wrapped about boxes of predetermined or standard dimensions. The ornamental wrappings may be fabricated in several different sizes depending on the dimensions of the dilferent boxes which are to be wrapped thereby.
When it is desired that an ornamental wrapping be used to cover a box or container, such as the box 60, the wrapping is placed on a fiat support surface with the inner surface of the body piece facing upwardly. The box is turned upside down and its top, which is of the same dimensions as the top panel 20, is placed on the top panel.
is adhesively secured thereto by the end transverse section 62a of the adhesive layer 25. The wrapping is then bent downwardly about the fold line 17 to cause the free end portion of the bottom panel section 22 to overlap and overlie the other end of the wrapping and the other transverse end section 625 of the adhesive layer adhesively secures the bottom panel section 22 to the overlay sheet.
The end tabs of the side panels at one end of the box, for example, the end tabs 21:: and 211) are then folded inwardly toward one another and the sections 620 and 62d of the adhesive strip secure the end tabs to the end 58 of the box, FIGURE 1. During this inward movement of the end tabs toward engagement with the box end 58, the gusset 86 folds about the edges 27 and 29 of the end tabs 18b and 19b and over the end tab 18b and into fiat abutting relationship with the inner surface of the end tab 181). Similarly the gusset 37 folds about the edges 53 and 51 of the end tabs 19b and 20b and moves into fiat abutting relationship with the inner surface of the end tab 295. The gusset 88 is similarly folded about the edges 52 and 54 of the end tabs 20b and 215, respectively, and moved into fiat abutting relation with the inner surface of the end tab 205 and the gusset 89 is folded about the edges 36 and 34 of the end tabs 21b and 22b and moved into fiat abutting relationship with the inner surface of the end tab 2212. Some portions of these gusset sections may engage portions of the adhesive layer of the end tabs they abut and are thus adhesively secured to these end tabs.
The end tabs 18b and 2252 are then bent upwardly about the fold line 2-5 and the sections 62c and 621 of the adhesive layer are pressed into engagement with the wall 58 thus securing the end tabs 18b and 22b to the box end Wall 58. The end tab 20b extends perpendicularly outwardly of the portions of the wrapping which have been bent upwardly into parallelism and engagement with the box end wall 58, as illustrated in FIGURE 2. The end tab 205 is then bent about the fold line 25 to position wherein its lower portions overlap the upper portions of the wrap and the section 62g of the adhesive layer engages the portions of the overlay sheet which extend over the end tabs 18b and 22b and thus closes one end of the wrapping.
In similar sequence, the side panel end tabs 19a and 21:: may then be folded inwardly toward each other to engage the other end Wall 57 of the box to cause the sections 6211 and 621' of the adhesive layer to adhesively engage the boxed wall 57 and secure the side panel end tabs to the end wall, the end tabs of the bottom panel sections are bent upwardly to cause the sections 62 and 62k of the adhesive layer to engage the box end wall 57, the end tab 20a of the top panel is folded downwardly to overlap portions of the overlay sheet which extend about the end tabs 18:: and 22a, and the section 62m 0f the adhesive layer then secures the end tab 25a to the overlay sheet thus closing the other end of the wrapping. The gussets 81-84 fold about the edges of the end tabs which define the slots of the body piece in the same manner as the gussets 36-89. The scored fold lines of the body piece provide lines of relatively great flexibility in the body piece which enables the bending or folding of the panels and end tabs to be at such predetermined lines.
As the wrapping is folded at the various fold lines of the body piece and about the edges of the box, since the dimensions of the overlay sheet within its peripheral overlap portions are the same as the dimensions of the body piece, the portions of the overlay sheet between each pair of adjacent parallel folds of the body piece at two adjacent parallel edges of the box are tensioned and curve outwardly between each such pairs of folds of the body piece. As a result, the overlay sheet has no wrinkles and the wrapping at the locations of the box edges presents a rounded, rather than a sharp, edge.
It will be apparent that while a particular sequence of the folding of the panels and end tabs has been described,
that the sequence of folding of the elements of the wrapping about a box may be varied as long as the ultimate relationship of the end tabs and panels of the various elements of the wrappings on the box is that shown in FIG- URES 1, 2 and 9 of the drawings.
It will further be seen that, if desired, the wrapping itself may form a container for an article.
It will also be apparent that while a single ribbon, which extends longitudinally about the overlay sheet when the wrapping is in its flat position, has been illustrated and described, a ribbon may extend transversely across the wrapping at any one of the panels. For example, a ribbon could extend about the wrapping and have its opposite ends secured to the sections 62g and 62m of the adhesive layer.
It will now be seen that a new and improved wrapping has been illustrated and described which is easily preformed in desired dimensions to cover boxes of given dimensions and configurations, that the preformed wrappings may be easily stored and transported in a stacked fiat condition, and that wrapping is easily and quickly assembled or wrapped about a box due to the pre-scoring of the fold lines of the body piece and the provisions of the slots between its end tabs which permit the end tabs to be easily and quickly folded over the ends of a box and the gusset sections of the overlay sheet to fold properly.
It will also be seen that the illustrated and described ornamental wrapping can be easily and quickly assembled about a box by an unskilled person since the prescored fold lines ensure that the panels fold at the proper locations and the gussets of the overlay sheet automatically fold as required when the end tabs of the body piece are folded over the ends of the box. This ease of assembly of the ornamental Wrapping permits quick wrapping of boxes by relatively unskilled employees in contradistinction to the difficulty of assembling an ornamental wrap by usual methods which requires cutting of the wrapping paper, proper folding of the cut wrapping paper, tying or securing of the overlapped portions of the paper to one another, and then tying or securing additional ornamentation, such as ribbons, to the wrapping. Such conventional wrapping methods also require considerable skill on the part of and consequently the training of the employee, and also result in substantial wastage of the ornamental paper.
The foregoing description of the invention is explanatory only, and changes in the details of the construction illustrated may be made by those skilled in the art, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A wrapping including: a planar body piece having a central top panel, a pair of transverse side panels extending from opposite sides of top panel, a pair of bottom panel sections extending outwardly from said side panels, and oppositely extending end tabs at the opposite ends of said panels and panel sections, said body piece having outwardly opening slots between adjacent end tabs; an adhesive layer on the peripheral portions of the inner surface of said body piece, said body piece having means providing fold lines between said panels and panel sections and between said panels and said end tabs;
and an overlay sheet extending about the outer surface of said body piece and having peripheral portions over- 6 lapped over peripheral portions of said body piece and secured thereto by means of said adhesive layer, said adhesive layer having exposed portions extending inwardly of said overlapped portions of said overlay sheet.
2. The wrapping of claim 1, and removable protective strips extending about and secured to said exposed portions of said adhesive layer.
3. The wrapping of claim 3, wherein each of said protective strips has a free end portion overlaying an end portion of an adjacent protective strip.
4. The wrapping of claim 3, and a decorative tape extending about said overlay sheet and having opposite end portions secured to said body piece by said adhesive layer.-
5. The wrapping of claim 1, wherein adjacent edges of adjacent end tabs extend divergently outwardly to provide outwardly opening slots, said overlay sheet having gusset sections spanning said slots.
6. The wrapping of claim 1, and a decorative tape extending about said overlay sheet and having opposite end portions secured to said body piece by said adhesive layer.
7. A wrapping including: a planar body piece having a rectangular top panel, a pair of rectangular side panels extending from opposite sides of said top panel, a pair of rectangular bottom panel sections extending outwardly from said side panels, rectangular end tabs extending outwardly from opposite ends of said side panels, end tabs extending outwardly from opposite ends of said top section having side edges which extend divergently outwardly to define triangular shaped slots between said end tabs of said top section and of said side panels and end tabs extending outwardly from opposite ends of said bottom panel sections, each of said end tabs of said bottom panel sections having an edge extending divergently outwardly from the end tab of its adjacent side panel said body piece having means providing fold lines between said panels, said sections and said end tabs facilitating folding of the panels, panel sections and end tabs relative to each other; an adhesive layer on peripheral portions of the inner surface of said body piece; and a rectangular overlay sheet extending about the outer surface of said body piece and having side and end peripheral portions overlapped over side and end peripheral portions of said body piece and secured thereto by means of said adhesive layer, said adhesive layer having exposed portions extending inwardly of said overlapped portions of said overlay sheet.
8. The wrapping of claim 7, and removable protective strips extending about and secured to said exposed portions of said adhesive layer.
9. The wrapping of claim 8, wherein each of said protective strips has a free end portion overlaying an end portion of an adjacent protective strip.
10. The wrapping of claim 9, and a decorative tape extending about said overlay sheet and having opposite end portions overlapping opposite edges of said body piece and secured to said body piece by said adhesive layer.
