SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,668, dated May 25, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E.Woo1)BURY, of Charlotte, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful 5 Improvement in Hammocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improvement in ham mocks, and relates more particularly to that to class of hammocks which are composed of woven wire. Heretofore hammocks made of this material have been arranged with strips of wood, or other suitable material, uponeither end, and the fastening devices by which the hammock was suspended from the posts were secured to these strips, thus giving the whole width of the hammock. This form of hammock has been found objectionable for the reason that, as it presents an approximately flat surface, even under the weight of the occupant, no safety is secured, and the person who is occupying it may fall out if he gets over too far on one side or the other.
My invention is designed to overcomethis 2 difficulty, and to provide a hammock which shall combine all the advantages of both the wire and the cord hammock.
My invention therefore consists of a hammock composed of woven wire having its ends 0 drawn together with a spring-steel bow passed inside the border at either end, to keep the sides of the hammockapart; and it further consists of certain details of construction hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hammock supported upon trees. location of the spring-bows.
In the drawings the body of the hammock 0 is represented atO. It is composed of woven wire, and is strengthened around its edges by an additional coil of wire. (Marked D.) The body of the material is preferably composed of galvanized wire, but it will be understood that I do not limit myself in this respect. The ends of the body are drawn together, and are passed through the larger ends of metallic casings A A, in which they are secured in Fig. 2 is a section showing the [any suitable manner, preferably by solder.
The smaller ends of the casing A have eye bolts held therein, and hooks a, running through these eyebolts, are adapted to be secured in any suitable fastening device upon the posts or trees from which the'hammock is to be suspended.
In order to keep the edges of the hammock separated, and to prevent them from coming together, I provide at either end spring-steel bows B, which are approximately U-shaped, and secured to the edge of the hammock by being securely fastened inside the border D, as shown in the figure. The spring of these bows is constantly outward, and thus tends to keep the edges of the hammock spread apart, so that it is easily accessible and at all times ready to be used. The ends of the hammock being drawn together gives a bag-shape to the hammock, and there is no danger of it tilting or spilling its occupant.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination, a hammock composed of woven wire having its ends drawn together and inelosed within casings A, said casings having means for attachment to the supporting-posts, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in the described hammock, of a woven-wire body having its ends drawn together and suitably secured, and of spring-bows secured at each end of the body, below the border D thereof, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in the described hammock, of the woven-wire body port-ion having its ends drawn together and secured within casings A A, fastening devices secured to said casings for suspending said hammock, and spring-bows secured at each end thereof below the border D, for keeping the sides apart, substantially as described.
