VEGETABLE' -MASHER.

$PEOIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,046, dated June 22, 1886.

Application filed March 26, 1886. Serial No. 196,704. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN M, I-IoLMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glens Falls, in the county of WVarren and State of New York, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Vegetable-Mashers; and I do hereby declare that the followingisa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has relation to that class of vegetable-mashers constructed of wire and provided with a suitable handle of wood. Heretofore these devices were constructed of a single strand of wire bent in suitable shape to form a base to be used in beating or mashing the vegetable.

The object of the invention is to improve the construction of this class of vegetablemashers whereby that portion thereof which comes in contact with the vegetable will be more effective and requiring less time to thoroughly reduce the vegetable to the desired state for use.

The invention therefore consists in forming or constructing the base of the masher of two or more strands of wire twisted together, thus forming a corrugated or toothed-like surface, which will have a moredecided effect on the vegetable in reducing it to the required consisteney or pulpy condition in comparatively a short time.

In the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective view of my invention, I have shown one of many forms of vegetable mashers to which the improvement may be ap" plied.

In the present instance the base of the masher consists of two sections, A B, bent in serpentine form, and their extremities bent upwardly and inwardly to a common center to form diagonal braces 0, four in number, and at their meeting ends connected to a suitable handle, D. The sections A B are composed of two or more wire strands, a b, twisted together, as shown, thereby making a corrugated or toothed-like surface to be brought in contact with the vegetable, thus rendering it more effective in the grinding or reducing the vegetable to the required consistency, as by turning the masher to the right and left at the same time it is brought down on the vegetable the irregular or corrugated surface formed by the twisting of the wires produces the desired effect on the vegetable to quickly reduce it to a pulpy mass.

I am aware that concaves and cylinders have been formed of wire ropes arranged closely together to give a scouring-surface for graiircleaners, and such feature I do not seek to cover in this application.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The vegetable-masher described, having its base or operating-face composed of strands of twisted wires bent into tortuous forms at distances apart, whereby various series of teeth are presented in all directions, as set forth.

In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in thepresence of two witnesses.

JOHN M. HOLMES.
