Cl. 1329b 3/00 U.S. Cl. 188 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for cooling melt spun synthetic filaments, having a quenching chamber with a back wall of foraminous material to introduce a stream of a cooling medium thereinto and two side walls, with parallel partitions forming a plurality of sections for guided passage of the cooling medium under uniform flow conditions. The partitions are of a shaped profile and form a channel for the passage of a bundle of filaments theretbrough.
This invention relates to devices for filament formation and, more specifically, to cabinets for cooling filament by an air stream during the process of formation thereof.
Prior art cabinets for cooling filaments by an air stream comprise a plenum or pressure chamber and a quenching or blasting chamber separated from each other with screens and a guiding lattice.
The known cooling cabinets, however, are disadvantageous in that whirls of air streams, fed to cool the filament bundles, arise in the blasting chamber, which adversely affect the filament quality, that is, increase filament irregularity with respect to count and reduce its tenacity.
It is an object of this invention to preclude the formation of whirls as well as the endwise motion of the air stream along the filament bundle within the zone of formation thereof.
It is likewise an essential object of this invention to improve the quality of the filament being spun.
In the accomplishment of the above and other objects of the invention, in a cabinet thereof comprising a plenum chamber and a quenching chamber separated by a guiding lattice placed therebetween, provision is made, according to the invention, for parallel partitions mounted at the side walls of the quenching chamber said partitions forming a number of sections for guided travel of the air stream, whereby whirls in said stream as well as its endwise motion along the filament bundle are precluded. The partitions are each constituted by pairs of members having recesses, a pair of the latter forming a channel for the filament bundle to pass.
For a better understanding of the invention, one embodiment thereof is described hereinbelow by way of example with reference to the appended drawings,'wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a diagrammatic side view partly in section of the cabinet according to the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a section taken on line I-I of FIG. 1.
A cabinet for cooling filament is mounted on a spinning machine past a spinning nozzle 1, and consists of chambers 2 and 3 intended for air feed, and a quenching or blasting chamber 4 separated from chamber 3 with screens 5 and a guiding lattice 6. Provision is made on each fold of chamber 4 for partitions 7 which form sections 8 intended to provide guided travel of the air stream and to preclude whirls in said stream as Well as its endwise motion along a filament bundle 9.
Partitions 7 have recessed 10 (FIG. 2), a pair of the latter forming a channel 11 for passage of a filament bundle 9 (FIG. 1).
Chambers 2 and 3 are incorporated in a common hous ing 12 and are separated from each other with a partition 13. Said chambers 2 and 3 are interconnected through a common conduit whose lower portion 14, running into chamber 2, is made cylindrical, while its upper portion 15, running into chamber 3, is made tapered.
Cylindrical portions 14 of the conduit is provided with holes 16, identical in diameter and spaced uniformly over the entire surface thereof.
Tapered portion 15 of the conduit is provided with holes 17, spaced only on that portion of the surface which faces the side opposite screens 5. Holes 17 differ in diameter and are so arranged over the entire height of the tapered portion 15 of the conduit as to obtain a uniform air-stream exhaust velocity through the entire height of blasting chamber 4.
The lower portion of chamber 2 is connected to a device 18 intended to control the amount of air fed into blasting chamber 4. Device 18 is essentially a lead screw 19 whose nut 20 is coupled through a lever 21 to an elastic spring 22. Air is fed to chambers 2 and 3 from a common air main (not shown in the drawings) via a connection 23. The direction of the air stream is the cabinet as indicated by arrow A.
The cabinet of the present invention functions as follows:
Air flows from the main through the connection 23 and, having passed between the coils of spring 22, is fed consecutively to chambers 2 and 3 where the pulsation of the air stream is damped. The air stream with damped pulsation is then reflected from the inner surface of housing 12, and passes, via screens 5 and guiding lattice 6, to blasting chamber 4. Inside this chamber the air flow passes through sections 8 as a guided stream, whereby a uniform cooling of filament 9 over the entire height of blasting chamber 4 is obtained.
The amount of air fed to blasting chamber 4 is controlled by varying the intercoil distance of spring 22 by turning lead screw 19.
To control the air expenditure a pressure gage is provided connected to chamber 2 wherein an opening 24 is made for the purpose.
Thus, the cabinet according to the present invention makes it possible to obtain filament of a negligible irregularity with respect to count and of higher tenacity.
What we claim is:
1. In combination with an apparatus for cooling melt spun synthetic filaments comprising a quenching chamber having a back wall of foraminous material and opposite side walls, and a plurality of parallel partitions of shaped profile adjacent said back wall and fixed along the entire width of said side walls to form a plurality of sections for directing a stream of a cooling medium forced through said back wall, said parallel partitions being disposed on both side walls at least through a part of the height of said quenching chamber and forming a channel for the passage of a bundle of filaments.
2. The combination as claimed in claim 1 wherein each partition is constituted by a pair of members having respective recesses cooperatively forming said channel.
3. The combination as claimed in claim 2 wherein Said recesses are in alignment in said channel.
4. The combination as claimed in claim 3 wherein said partitions are horizontally disposed and the channel is vertical.
5. The combination as claimed in claim 4 wherein said members of each partition are secured to respective side walls of said quenching chamber.
