CHARLES E. BALDWIN, OF NETV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR- TO FDMUN D P. STEVART, OF SAME PLACE.
DlCE-THROWING ATTACHMENT FOR ClGAR-CUTTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,453, dated August 3, 1885,
Application filed March 25, 1886. Serial No. 196,461.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. BALDWIN. a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, N. Y., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dice-Throwing Attachments to Cigar-Gutters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a dice-throwing attachment to cigar cutters; and the novelty consists in the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of the parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The device is made of such convenient size as to be secured in any suitable manner to a table or counter.
The wrapper upon the butt-end of cigars is secured by a paste or glue which ordinary persons object to receive into the mouth. Various devices have been designed for cutting off such ends. I combine with such a device a dice-holding and dice-throwing plate.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a step box having a glass pane, a, and a vertical side, A, provided with a series of differentsized apertures, a, adapted to receive the butts of cigars. \Vorking in guides b b, and held normally upward by the constant force of a spring, C, is a plunger, 13, having a handknob, If, and carrying upon an arm, d, a series of cutting'edges, 1), arranged to traverse across the rear face of the vertical side A, and to close and disclose the openings a to sever the parts of cigars which may be projected therein. These knife-edges are constructed and arranged to give a shear or draw cut, and in other respects this portion of the machine is of well-known and approved design. Rigid with the plunger is an arm, j, which projects into the box-chamber beneath the pane a, and it is of such a size as to very nearly fill the horizontal area of said chamber, a vertical plate, 1, serving" to divide the arm f fromthe dice-plate F.
In the complete machine the plate F carries a number of dice, and the plunger being de pressed, and then released, the dice are thrown by the force of the spring into various directions. Their positions when at rest may be readily discerned through the transparent pane a, and thus provide a source of amusement. A door or drawer, as G, allows the tobacco-cuttings to be removed.
Modifications in details of construction may be made-without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of the invention. Other devices than dice may be used.
\Vhat I claim is 1. The box A,having horizontal transparent pane a, and the plunger B, carrying the knife of an ordinary cigar-cuttcr, jointly with the dice plate F, arranged under said pane, a spring for inclining the diee-plate and plunger upward, and a stop for limiting their upward motion, as set forth.
2. The step-box A A, having transparent pane (6 upon its lower plane, the plunger B, projecting from the higher plane and carrying the knife of an ordinary cigar-cutter, jointly with the dice-plate F, the spring 0, and stop f, all adapted for joint operation as set forth.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. BALDWIN.
