SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,910l dated August 10, 1886.

Be it known that I, JOHN T. HAwKINs, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Deliveries :for Oscillating-CylinderPrinting-Machines,which invention or improvements are fully set forth and illustrated in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
The object of the invention is to provide a delivery apparatus for the continuous delivery of sheets from an oscillatingimpression-cylinder, Iand to adapt said apparatus in duplicate to a double-acting machine printing a sheet for each single oscillation of the impressioncylinder.
The invention consists of the parts and combinations of parts as hereinafter described, and particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine with the feedboard stands removed on the sight side, the more clearly to show inner parts. Fig. 2 is a plan with both feed-boards omitted in order secured to the top of the frames A A.

Fig. 3 is an end elevation from the driving-gear end with the sheet-flier and down-tapes removed. Fig. 5 is an elevation, partly in seetion, on an enlarged scale, of details hereinafter described.
In said figures the several parts are indicated by letters, as follows:
A A are the main frames; A2, the impression-cylinder; A3, the bed-plate, and A4 a ribgirder upon which the bed-rollers run. w
A5 A6 are frame-standards for carrying the feed-boards and delivery apparatus, and are A7 AB are the feed-boards.
B is the type-bed, B the bedrollers. v
B2 is a toothed rack secured to the under side of the bed B.
B5 is a weighted carriage carrying a toothed rack, Bf.
B5 are rollers supporting the carriage B3 and running on suitable ways on the bed-plates A3.
B5 is a-rolling gear-wheel engaging both of the racks B2 B.
C C are pairs of spur-gears secured to short shafts C15, journaled in suitable bearings, G2, secured to the frames A A, and in similar bearings, O3, secured to the rib-girder A5.
CL is a'shaftjournaled in the frames A A,
and in suitable brackets, C5, secured to a crossgirt, C, connecting the frames A A. T he shaft OL has secured to it a series of spur-pinions, Cl, engaging the spur-gears O O.
In the pair of spur-gears C is secured a crank-pin, C5, and similarly in cach pair of gears C a crank-pin, C.
C10 is a forked connecting-rod, articulated at the-single end to the crank-pin C5 of the gears C and at the forked end to a shaft, C, secured in the rolling wheel B5.
C12 are connecting-rods articulated at one end to the crank-pins C9 and at the other to the carriage B5.
Outside of the frame A tight and loose pulleys C15 and a fiy-wheel, C, are mounted ou the shaft 0*, by means of which power is applied to operate the whole machine.
O1, Fig. 4, are rollers for the support of the outer edges of the type-bed immediately under theimpression-cylinder, which rollers run upon studs secured in the frames A A.
The bed-rollers B are run loosely upon pins B7, carried in framesB5.
Io the upper side of the type-bed B are secured two racks, D, which engage two corresponding gear-wheels, D, secured to the ends of the impression-cylinder A2.
D3 are the ink-fountains, and DL the usual inking-rollers.
In the upper frames, A5 A, are journaled two shafts, D5, each carrying a gear-wheel, D, engaging one of the cylinder-gears D.
Upon two shafts, D?, secured in the frames A5 A5, are mounted a series of curved strippers, D5. Upon two similar shafts, D, are se4 cured a series of curved strippers, Dl".

In the frames A5 AG are journaled two pairs 0f shafts, D12 D15, carrying, respectively, each a series of pulleys, DH D15. The-pulleys D14 are driven by frictional contact with the pulleys D, and the pulleys D5 by frictional contact with the pulleys D15. The strippers D5enter at ICO one end between the pulleys D, and at the other end lie close to the surface of the impression cylinder A2. The cylinder A2 carries a series of sheet-lifter fingers, A10, and a series of grippers,A,both operated in any well-known way, the lifter-fingers at the proper time elevating the head of the sheet from the surface of the impression-cylinder, so as to pass over pulleys D and under the strippers D3.
Upon two shafts, E, secured in the frames A6 A, are adjustably secured a series of arms, E', each carrying a tape-pulley, E2. Upon two similar shafts, E", are adj ustably secured a series of arms, E, each carrying a tape-pulley, A series of tapes, El, run over pulleys Dl and E, and a series of tapes, E, run overi pulleys D and lli. The tapes Ff and E are in contact where pulleys DH and Dl5 meet, but diverge from that point toward pulleys Upon shaft E are adj ustably secured another series of arms, E", carrying a series of tapepulleys, E', and upon shafts E are adj ustably' secured a series ot' arms, El, carrying a series et tape-pulleys, B
Journaled in the outer ends of the frames A5 AG are two shafts, F-carryinga series of tape-pulleys, F-and two rollers, F2. (The rollers F- maybe replaced by a shaft carrying tape-pulleys, when desirable.)
Journaled in the frames A A are two shafts, F, each carrying a series of tape-pulleys, F*. A series of tapes, F5, run over pulleys F and E, a similar series, F, run over pulleys E and rollers F2, and a third series ot' tapes, FT, run over rollers F2 and pulleys F.
Journaled in brackets G, secured to the frame A, is a shaft, G', extending from end to end of the machine. Upon one end of shaft C, is secured one of a pair of miter-wheels, G, the other of the pair, G, heilig secured upon the shaft G.
Upon each extremity of shaft G' is secured a bevel-wheel, Gi, engaging a similar bevelwheel, G5, secured to one end of each of the shafts F. rlhe shaft G, being continuously rotated, imparts continuons motion to the tapes FT, F, and F6.
The s rtft-s Di", heilig reversibly rotated simultaneously with the oscillating cylinder A2, run alternately in the directions imparted to them.
Fulerumed upon two studs, I, secured to frame A, are two levers, I', carrying rollers I.
Secured to shaft G are cams l, the grooves of which the rollers IAZ engage.
Journaled in the frames A A are two roekshafts, l, te which are secured a series of flyiingers,
Secured to one end of the rock-shafts lever-arms 1.
To the free ends of levers l' and le are articulated the connecting-rods I7.
By the rotation of the cams I3 the iiy-fingers I5 are operated to deposit the sheets upon a suitable receiving-table. (Not shown.)

It is understood that there are two sets of grippers and two sets of sheet-lifter fingers in the cylinder A2, so as to take a sheet from each 'feedboard and deliver said sheets to each of the series of pulleys D and strippers DB. It is not necessary to show said gripper-s and fingers, as they are well known in the art, and may be operated in divers well -kuown ways. Y
The complete operation of the machine is as follows: Power being applied to shaft C', it is transmitted through the gears CT to the crank-gears C C. The crank pins C", being placed opposite the crank-pin C5, the rollinggear B6 is moved in one direction, while the carriage B3 is moved inthe opposite direction a like distance. If the carriage B and its rack B* remained at rest, the bed B would have a rectilinear motion equal to double the dialneter of the circle described by the crank-pin C. The rack B4 being, however, moved in the opposite direction, imparts one-half more niotion to the bed in each direction. The carriage B3 is made of suicieut weight, as compared with the type-bed B, to have equal momentum with it, or sufficiently greater to also compensate for the rotary momentum of the cylinder A2 and other rotating parts driven by it, this rotary molnentum being imparted to and absorbed from the type -bed B. The effect of the above-described operation of the parts is therefore to equilibrate the meinentum of the moving parts, transmitting the strains to the crank-gears C C, and through them to the shaft C, while requiring a radius of crank but a small fraction of the travel of the type-bed. The impression-cylinder A'l is of such diameter as to make nearly two revolutions in each direction, so that a sheet taken from either feed-board will be printed and its head end carried to the point of contact of the tapes F5 F6, wherethey run over the pulleys Ff* E, and the distance between the centers of pulleys Ff and the point of contact of tapes E El, where they run over the pulleys D D, is made greater than the length of a sheet. The grippers of cylinder A2 release the sheet at the nearest point of approach of pulleys Du to cylinder A2, the lifterngers causing it to pass under the strippers D8, over pulleys D, under pulleys D, where it is defiectcd upward by strippers DO, over pulleys D, and between tapes E il. The tapes E E7 diverging, will not hold the sheet after the head end has passed into the bite of tapes F5 F", where they run over pulleys E E, and at this point the bed B, cylinder A2, and all the reversibly-moving parts will have reached the extremity of motion in one direction. From this point the tapes E El, move in a contrary direction to the sheet, but no longer holding it, the sheet being thereafter carried to the flier by the continuouslymoving tapes F F FT.' The cams I3 are properly timed upon the shaft G', to cause the fly- IIS fingers I5 to lay the sheet down upon a receiving-board upon its arrival down in front of said fly-lingers.

In a sheet-delivery for an oscillatingeyli nder printing-inachinc, the colnbinatiomwith an oscillating cylinder carrying grippers and sheet-liftcr lingers, of a series of pulleys, as D, driven in unison with said impressioncylinder, a series of dellecting-strippers, as D, a second series of deflecting-strippers, as DI, two series of diverging tapes, as E El, having alternating motion imparted to them in unison with the imprcssion-cylinder, and two series of continuously'moved tapes, as F5 FG, in contact throughout their length,whereby a sheet, when released bythe grippcrs and elevated by the lifterlingers of said cylinder, is dcflected into and between said two series of diver; 2;in,g` tapes, conveyed by them until held between said two series of continuously-moving` tapes, and then conveyed away for Iinal delivery by said eontinuously-nioving` tapes,
while said diverging tapes perform their retro grade motion with the said impression-cylinder,substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a sheet-delivery for an oscillating-cylinder printing-machine, in combination with two feed-boards, as AT AS, an oscillating` cylinder carrying two sets of grippers and two vsets ol sheet-lifter fingers, two series of pnlleys, as D, driven in unison with said impression-cylindor, two series of deflcctingstrippers, as DS, two series of deflectingstrippers, as D10, four series of diverging` tapes, as E El, having alternating` motions imparted to them in unison with the impression-eylinder, `l'onr series of conti'1n1ously-moved tapes, as F5 F, in contact throughout their length, and two series of down-tapes, as F7, whereby a sheet, when released by the respective sets of eylinder-grippers, is deflected and delivered from said cylinder at each of its single oscillations, and conveyed away by said tapes for final delivery upo'n opposite. sides o1" the machine to or upon suitable tables or rceeptacles, substantially as and for. the purposes set forth.
