Heating Stove.
No= 34,796. Patented March 25. 1862.
Fey: 1 l 2 ra-a 5 f 6 0 m'i'n case's fur/anion- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WV. WALKER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT 1N STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 34,796, dated March 25, 1862.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WALKER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of a stove and ashpail furnished with my invention. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same.
My invention consist-s in a stove made with a discharging opening, spout, or conduit, and a rake entrance or passage, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby coals and ashes, or either, by means of a rake or poker, may be raked or discharged into a covered pail or ash-receiver, as hereinafter explained.
On the 13th day of August, A. D. 1861, Letters Patent were granted to me on an ashpail to be set up to a stove. In such patent I limited my claim to the ashpai1, as described, with its cover, spout, and a rakereceiving opening operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth in the specification of such patent, the object of such invention being to enable ashes to be discharged from a stove into such pail without causing dust to arise from such ashes and fall on the stove or articles in the vicinity thereof. I have now invented an improved stove, whereby a similar result may be obtained by different means.
In the drawings, A exhibits the stove, of which a is the fire-chamber, l) the grate, and c the ash-chamber. The said chamber 0,1 provide with a discharging opening, spout, 0r conduit (Z, to lead out of it and so that a covered pail B, provided with any induction hole or conduit 6, may be set up to the stove and have its opening or conduit 6 in communication with the said opening or conduit (1, of the stove. The said conduit d or the said stove I provide with another opening or rakeentrance f, which may be either at the outerend of the conduit (Z or be arranged at the opposite end of the ash-chamber, as shown at f, such opening f or f being provided with a door 9 or g, by which it may be closed at such times as it may not be necessary to pass a rake or other proper implement through it for the purpose of either raking or forcing ashes from the aslrchamber into the ash pail or receiver B.
By means of my invention ashes may be removed from the ash-chamber of the stove without causing dust to arise from them and settle either upon articles that may be either in or on the stove or within the apartment in which it may be.
The ash-pail may be constructed as shown in the drawings, or in any other suitable manner, by which it may be covered and be so presented to the stove discharging passage or conduit as to receive the ashes directly therefrom while such may be in the act of being expelled from the ash-chamber by means of a rake or other proper implement pressed into the said ashchamber and through the rake-receiving passage f or f thereof. During the process of so expelling the ashes from the stove a current of air, in case there may be at the time a fire within the fire-place, will rush into the said rake-receiving opening and prevent any ashes from escaping from it.
I do not claim an ash-pail covered and provided with an eduction-spout and a rake-receiving opening; but i I claim A stove made or furnished with a discharging spout or conduit or its equivalent, and a rake-receiving passage leading from its ashchamber, substantially as described, whereby ashes may be paired or discharged from the said ash-chamber into a covered pail constructed with an ash-receiving hole or induction-pipe to communicate with the ash-chanr her through the discharging opening orspout thereof, as explained.
GEO. W. \VALKER.
