IMPROVED FRUIT-BASKET.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,073, dated April 29, 1862.

lSe it known. that l, L, VHEELER BERG/HER, of New ll'aven, in the county of New Haven and State ot Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Basket for Fruit and other Uses; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a :t'ull and exact description thereof, ret'- erenee being had to the accompanying drawing:

The nature ot my invention consists in usin g paper :for baskets, instead of wood or other material, and in fastening' the same together with glue or other like matter, the whole rendered impervious to moisture by a coating oit' varnish or otherwise.

To enable others to make and use my in- Yeniion, l will proceed to its construction.

l take paper of such thickness and cut it into strips of such width and lengt-h as thes i ze ot' the basket may require; th en,t`or a ro und basket, cross the pieces in the center the same as for a wood-splint basket, fastening1 with glue where they cross, thus forming a bottom or base; then turn up the strips, as in common basket-work, coniining the upper ends with an inner and outer band to form the rim;

then strengthen around the bottom and center with outer bands as often as may be necessary for the size and strength required, gluing the strips and bands together wherever they may cross, all of which is more fully shown in the accompanying drawing, the whole covered with a solution of rosin and alcohol or any other like preparation in suitable proportions to form a protection from i moisture.
