Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
EPENETUS A. BENNETT, OF NEV YORK, Y.
TEUss.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 3,571, dated April 30, 1844.`
To all 'whom t may concern.' y
Be it known that I, EPENETUs A. BEN- NETT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trusses for the Cure of I-Iernia, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings ofthe same, making part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of the truss. The pad A, covering B2', strap C, and buckle D of the pad, are Inadein the usual, or most approved, manner. a
The'improvement consists in making use of a single bandof steel or other suitable material bent to the requisite shape for the` intended purpose and attaching the pad to one of its extremities and the strap to the other in the following manner: This band ot' steel is first curved so as to be made to asa sume a ligure resembling the letter C-it is then bent inward toward the body of the patient and downward obliquely the requisite length to receive the pad which is attached thereto by a-screw and socket--the portion of the steel band thus bent obliquely downward forming an elastic arm B2 to which the pad is attached in such manner as to cause aapressurel inward as well as obhquely up-ward against the ruptured partJ of the body thus rendering the truss more effective in producing the intended result and cheaper in its construction. y
I do not claim making the spring holding he pad continuous with the main spring,
Vhat I do claim as my invention and for which I solicit Letters Patent, is,
The peculiar manner in which I form the aforesaid spring arm B2 by giving the main spring B an abrupt spiral curve at a point distant from the extremity of the spring B equal to the length of the required spring arm B2, `and then continuing the said bent portion of the spring obliquely downward at an angle of about 45 degrees with a hori` zontal plane, or any required angle, forming a spring arm to which the pad is attached, producing the effect above set forth.
` E. A. BENNETT.`
