Description

(No ModeL) N. E. PARKS.
HORN TIP I NO. 365,856. Patented July 5, 1887.
'justing it in place or removing it.
UNITED STATES; PATENT GFFICEQ NATHAN EURIAL PARKS, )F ST. CHARLES, ILLINOIS.
HORN-TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,856, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed April 19, 1887. Serial No. 235,402. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN EURIAL PARKS,
a citizen of the United'States, residing at St.
Charles, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horn-Tips, of which the follow-' ing is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in horn-tips for cattle, the object being to construct the tip in such a manner that the least amount of injury will be done should an enraged animal attempt to gore a person or animal.
The invention consists in making the ball of the tip so as to rotate or revolve upon the part of the same that is attached directly to the horn, so that besides protecting the person from the direct thrust by the shape of the ball, the improved construction will also save a person or animal from the injury done by the attacking animal twisting his head and horns, as is usually done. a
The invention further consists in the construction and arrangement of the improved tip, as hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved horn-tip attached to the horn of the animal. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the horn-tip detached.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the part of the tip into which the end of the horn is inserted. The. said part has an ovoidal cavity, a, similar in shape to and adapted to receive the end of a horn. The entrance to this cavity is re-enforced by the thick portion B, of any desired contour, but preferably angular or octagonal, so that it can be handled with more case, certainty, and safety in ad- The outer ovoidal portion, 0, of part A has at its end a circular opening, 8, entering the cavity a.
D is the cap or ball of the horn-tip, provided with the neck d and the ovoidal cavity E, extending inward from the neck and corresponding in size and shape to the ovoidal portion 0 of the part A.
e is an opening extending from the point of the cavity E to the outer surface of the ball, and having its outer orifice countersunk, as
Fis a pin theshank of which passes through the openings of the parts A and D, with its head It resting and fitting in the end of the cavity a. The outer end of the pin F can be riveted in the countersunk outer orifice of the opening 0, so as to secure the parts A and D firmly and permanently together, and yet pro viding a swivel connection for the ball.
It is evident from the foregoing that should an enraged animal wearing my described horntips attempt to gore a person or animal, or hurt them by twisting the horns, they could not do any injury, for the ball would prevent the horn from penetrating, and the rotating of the ball on the end of the tip would cause the blow to pass harmlessly off, and all danger from the gore or twist of the horns would be avoided. When the part A is in position, it can be easily secured by pins passing through openings g in the re-enforcement B, to hold the device firmly and securely on the horns.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- 1. A horn-tip for cattle, composed of a part having a cavity adapted to fit upon the end of a horn, and a rounded or ball part attached directly to and rotating upon the former, substantially as specified.
2. In a horn-tip for cattle, the combination of a part, A, having an ovoidal cavity, a, to fit on the end of a horn, a re-enforcement, 13, around the mouth of said cavity, and an ovoidal outer portion, 0, with a rounded or ball part provided with a neck, cl, the edge of which bears against the said re-enforcernent B, and an ovoidal cavity, E, extending inward from said neck and resting and turning on the ovoidal portion 0 of the former part, substantially as specified.
3. The herein-describedhorn-tip, composed of the part A, provided with the ovoidal cavity a, the angular re-enforcement B, and the ovoidal portion 0, having the opening 0 at the outer end, the part D, provided with the neck (1, ovoidal cavity E, and the opening 6, and the pin F, provided with the head h, which is seated in the cavity a, the said pin connecting IOC the parts A and D together by passing through parts .A and D together and allowing a rotary 10 the Openings 0 e, substantially as described. movement of the ball D, as set forth.
4. In a horn-tip, the part A, to be attached In testimony that I claim the foregoing as rigidly to the end of a horn, combined with my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 5 the ball part D, swiveled to the part A, as set presence of two witnesses.
forth. NATHAN EURIAL PARKS.
5. In a horn-tip, the part A, to be attached Witnesses:
rigidly to the end of a horn, combined with J. L. WARD,
the ball part D, and the pin F, connecting the WM. HOLDEN.
