PERF ORATING-IVIACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 366,104, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed July 9, tPSG. Serial No. 207,505. (No model.)
2'0 all! whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. HOLM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland, State of Ohio,
' haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Perforating-Maehines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is a device for. perforating paper. It is adapted to be applied or attached to any cylindrical printing-press.
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of my invention attached to the sides of a printing press. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the de vice detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ends of two shafts and the hinged clamp rigidly uniting the same. Fig.4 representsa plan fragmentary View of thecylinder and its circumferential band.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the several Views.
A indicates a shaft having its ends soon red to the inner sides of the press-frame.
B is a shaft lying parallel to the shaft A and secured thereto by means of the clamps G (J. The clamps G are provided with two collars, O G". The collar '0 is provided with a hinged portion, WVhen the hinged portion 0 of the collar is closed it is secured to the clamp neck or shank by a'bolt, D, said bolt passing through the hinged portion and clamp-neck, substantially as shown in Fig. 3. The collar 0 is provided with athreaded bossopening for the reception of the threaded end of the bolt E. The bolt E enters said opening, and when screwed in rigidly unites the shaft B with the collar 0. The collar 0 its hinged portion 0, and the bolt D serve to rigidly unite the shaft A and said collar.
F F represent two sleeves secured to the shaft B at any desired points by the set-screws F. The set-screw passes through a threaded opening in the sleeve.
G represents an arm rigidly, fixed to the sleeve F. This arm is provided with an opening on its upper end for the reception of the threaded bolt H.
H is a threaded thumb-nut on the outer end of the bolt H.
I is a lug rigidly fixed to the sleeve F.
J is a bifurcated arm, having a perforatingwheel, K, journaled therein. The periphery of this wheel is serrated,so as to perforate the paper when it is passed between said wheel and the press-cylinder. The onterend of the bifurcated arm J isjointed at J to the lug I.
L represents a spiral spring encircling the inner end of the threaded bolt H between the arms G and J. r
The object of the jointed lug and arm I J, bolt H, thumb-nut H, and spiral spring L is to regulate and adjust the pressure of the perforating-wheel K against the paper 011 the press-cylinder M--that is to say, the spiral spring L may be longitudinally expanded or contracted by operating the thumb-nut H and the pressure of the perforating-wheel K on the paper thereby increased or diminished at pleasure. The inner end of the bolt H is pivoted at h to the jointed arm J. The periphery of the cylinder on the line of travel of the wheel K is provided with a circumferential band, M, of wood, lead, or other suitable material, to prevent the wheel from cutting into the cylinder while in operation. The main shaft A having its i11- ner ends fixed to the sides of the press, serves to strengthen and brace the press. By adj ustably attaching the parallel shaft B to the fixed shaft A said shaft B may be firmly held in Va rious positions. By means of the clamps O the shaft B and its connected mechanism may be laterally adjusted along the shaft A, or said shaft B and its attached parts may be swung backward and downward, when desired that is to say, moved in the arc of a circle around the shaft Awhcreby the perforatingwheels K may be adjusted in relation to the periphery of the cylinder.
The matter for printing is attached to the revoluble cylinder by the clamping device now in use,0r any suitable means. Before the paper reaches the type the said paper, by
the movement of the cylinder, is passed between the rotary perforating-whecl K and the periphery of the cylinder. The rotation of the cylinder rotates the perforating-wheel K, and thereby perforates the paper which passes between said wheel and cylinder. is thereby perforated before it is brought in contact with the type.
The sleeve F and its connected devices carrying the perforating-wheel is longitudinally adjustable on the shaft 13, whereby said per- The paper IOO forating-wheel may be caused to travel on any circumferential line on the periphery of the cylinder. Any suitable number of these devices may be placed upon the shaft K.
The shaft B may be rotated in clamps O to throw all of the perforating-wheels at once out Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters, Patent- 1. The combination, with the printing-press linder ofa erforatin -wheel ada )ted to bear y p D upon said cylinder, a movable bearing and support for the wheel, and a spring pressing upon the outer side of said support or hearing, whereby the wheel may be held against the cylinder with a yielding pressure, substantially as set forth.
2. A perforating attachment for printingpresses, consisting in the combination of a jointed arm-provided on its outer end with a perforating-wheel, a bolt threaded on its outer end and having its inner end pivoted to said arm, a relatively fixed arm provided with an opening for the reception of said bolt, a spring interposed between said arms, and a threaded nut on the outer end of the bolt aforesaid, substantially as specified.
3. A. perforating attachment for printingpresses, consisting in the combination of the fixed shaft A, parallel shaft B, and unitingclamps, the shaft B being rotatable and 1ongitudinally adjustable in the eyes 0 of the clamp-bearings, and adapted to be clamped therein at the desired point by setscrews F of the rotatable sleeve F, longitudinally adjustable on the shaft B, said sleeve being provided with a lug having a springactuated arm jointed thereto, the outer end of said arm being provided with a perforating-wheel, substantiall y as specified.
4. A perforating attachment for printingpresses, consisting in a fixed shaft lying parallel with the axis of the cylinder, a parallel shaft, B, and clamps for connecting the two shafts, each of said clamps being provided with two collars for the reception, respectively, of the two shafts, one of the collars being provided with a hinged section and means, sub stantially as described, for locking the same, wherebythe shafts may be held in a fixed relative position or the shaft B detached, in combination withan adjustable sleeve on the shaft B, said sleeve being provided with a lug having a spring-actuated arm jointed thereto,
GEORGE A. HOLM.
