UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BION E. MARTIN AND D. EVERETT MARTIN, OF SYOAMORE, OHIO.
HALTER-TRIMMING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 366,416, dated July 12, 1887.
Application filed March 11, 188.7.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, BION E. ll/IARTIN and D. EVERETT MARTIN, of Sycamore, in the county of \Vyandot and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved XVeb-Adjuster for Halters, 820., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention consists of a web-holding device designed more especially for use in web halters for holding the web and for adjusting it to increase or diminish the size of the halter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 illustrates ahalter having our web holder and adjuster applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the adjuster, showing the ends of the web and a strap held therein. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line y y of Fig. 2. Fig 4 is a sectional plan view on the line 0000, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of the adjuster free from webs or straps. Fig. 6 shows an adjuster constructed to receive two lower or side webs; and Fig. 7 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken on the line to w of Fig. 6.
The webadjuster A, Figs. 1 and 2, is constructed to hold and to enable the adjustment of the cheelrweb a and the nosepiece b of the halter, and also the chin-strap c, which is secured in the side bow, d, of the adjuster, the said how being curved outward for that purpose below the central transverse bar, 0, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The bar e is joined to and made a part of the main surrounding frame of the adjuster, which is composed of the side pieces, ff, and end pieces, ff. Between the central cross-piece, c, and the upper end piece, f are the transverse cross pieces, h h, while between the central piece, 6, and the end pieces, f, are the vertical bars ii. To connect the web a, one of its ends is passed under the end piece, f around the bar h, and back over the bar h, between said bar and the web. In this manner the web is self-binding, so that it cannot slip in the adjuster, and by Serial No. 230,530. (No model.)
slipping the web through the adjuster to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 the end may be easily drawn through to take up the slack, and the web thus easily adjusted.
The web 0 may be attached to and adjusted in the device in like manner by passing the web under the side piece, f, around the bar i, and back between the web and the bar i, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The webs a b are thus held at right angles to each other, and may be easily taken up and let out to suit the occasion.
In the form of adjuster shown in Fig. 5 the bow d in the side piece, f, is omitted, and in Figs. 6 and 7 the vertical bars i i are duplicated in the lower part of the adjuster, so that in place of an ordinary strap, a, as in Fig. 1,
a web, 1/, may be attached to the adjuster in line with the Web I), and said web adjusted and held in the same manner as the webs a I), de scribed above.
By constructing the adjuster as described,
and by applying it as described, the web may be adjusted to increase or diminish the size of the halter, and by passing the web over and under the cross pieces, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, so that the outer web compresses the end of the web between it and the bar, any strain upon the web renders it self-binding in the adjuster or holder.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp The web holder and adjuster A, composed of the main frame, the central bar, 0, the two transverse bars h h above the central bar, and the four vertical bars 2' t" below the central bar, in combination with the web passed over and under the bars h h and i i, so that the strain upon the web renders it self-binding in the holder, substantially as described.
BION E. MARTIN. D. EVERETT MARTIN.
