THOMASB. HODGE, OF rnovrnnnon, nnonn ISLAND.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,540, dated September 27,, 1887.

Application filed April 23, 1887. Serial No. 235,932.

' upon line a m of Fig. 2, as seen attached to a box which is shown in vertical section. Fig. 4 is a modified form of my invention. Fig. 5 shows the form of the blank from which my label-holder is made.

My invention is intended to be used upon boxes or other receptacles of merchandise, and is designed to hold and display cards or labels indicating the price or quality of the goods exhibited, or for similar purposes.

My invention consists of a suitable standard portion furnished with spurs or points by which it is attached to the box or other receptacle, and a clamping portion connected therewith by a hinge-joint, as hereinafter more particularly specified.

My label-holder is made of any suitable The clamping portion is formed from a blank cut from the sheet metal in the shape shown in Fig. 5, having a central crosspiece, a, a tongue-piece, b, a projecting part, c, and two side pieces or prongs, d. The lower part of the side pieces are bent up into contact with the upper part thereof to form the clamping-fingers c, the tips of which flare outwardly to a slight degree.

(No model.)

the bottom the standard A is bent transversely at a right angle, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3.

The part c of the blank, Fig. 5, is bent into a butt, 8. A pin, 12, passing through the butts o o 8, forms them into a hinge-joint and connects the clamping portion and standard of my label-holder.

My device is fastened to abox, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The sharp points m and a are pressed into the wood and prevent displacement, and the standard is thus held in snug contact with the inner surface of the box.

The tongue bis bent forward, as seen in Fig.

3. A card, B, is inserted, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the clamping-fingers c being upon the front side of it, and the tongue I) being in the rear. By the bending of these parts I) and e the card is snugly held and embraced.

The purpose of the hinge-joint is to enable the folding down of the label-holder when the box-cover is shut, or to permit the card to be held at an angle, as seen in Fig. 1, so as to be more easily read.

Instead of having the standard A rectangular in form, as in Fig. 2, it may be shortened and made triangular, as in Fig. 4. In such case it is attached to the top edge of the front of the box by pressing the sharp point a down into the wood, which may be prepared to receive it by a thrust of a knife-blade.

I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved label-holder herein described, consisting of a clamping portion formed from one plate of sheet metal with side prongs and fingers and a central cross piece and tongue, in combination with a standard portion hinged thereto and formed of a sheet-metal plate with spurs thereon, substantially as specified.
