SPECIFICATION. forming partvof Letters Patent No. 376,994, dateddanuary 24, 1888.
Application led May ',7, 1887. Serial No. 237,405. (No model.) Patented in France October 29, 1886, Nov.1f79,384.
To 'all whom/pimwy'concern: y
Be itl known that I, CLAUDE TACnoN, a'citi'., zen of the Republic of France, residing at i Charlieu, Department of Loire, France, have' i of which the following is a specification.
Io In another application for Letters Patent.
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Finishing and Polishing rlextile Fabrics, (for Which l obtained patent in France, No. l79,384, dated October 29, 1886,)
led si multaneousl y herewith under Serial No.l 237,404'1 have described and shown a machine for finishing and polishing textile fabrics, inA
which a series of 'rotating flexible blades are caused to act on the surface of the goods transversely to the direction of motion of the goods. In the machine for finishing and polishing l textile fabrics forming the subject-matter of my present invention, the flexible polishingblades are arranged and actuated to rub the goods longitudinally or in the direction of' their movement as they are fed through the ,of the machine, the' blades of each set beingl so located on their respective shafts as to occupy different lateral positions relatively to' the goods, so lthat as they are rotatedy and caused to act on the goods all parts thereof are uniformly submitted to/an equal amount of rubbing action. l
To fully describe the construction and oper'- ation of the various parts of thisimproved tinplete machine.
ishing and polishing machine, I will now refer to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, Sheet l, is a plan View of the com- Fig. 2, Sheet 2, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3, Sheet 3, is a rear elevation or view of the end of the machine at which the goods enter. Fig.' 4, Sheet 4, is af sectional elevation'taken on the line v a', Fig. l. Fig. 5, Sheet 3, is an enlarged'front view of a part of one of the polishing-shaft-sand flexible blades. andl Fig. 7, Sheet 3, is a transverse section of the same. A
Fig. 6, Sheet 3,'.is a plan View, f
The main frame a is rectangular in form,Y
and in the upper part thereof, supported on the ber c, provided with the inlet-pipe jc" andk pressure-regulating cock c2, the clothcovering d, and strips of leather e e.v These strips of leather are secured to the edges of the box'b,
so as to lie at an angle to the goodsas shown at Fig. 1, the object of which will be hereinafter explained.A
The shafts f f, which carry g g, rotate in bearings on the tops/of the sides ofthe main frame c, and they are all driven the iiexibleblades f in the same direction by means of bevel-pinions It h, secured to the shaft ,placedlongitudinally in bearings projecting from the sidev of thepframe, meshing into the'bevel-wheels h h', secured to the ends of the .shafts ff, adjacent to the shaft i. The other ends of the shafts f f are provided with similar bevel-wheels, .h2 A
h2. This permits of the shafts ff being reversed in position in their bearings, so that the other sides ofthe iexible blades g g will strike the' i goods j, thus providing means for counteracting any set imparted to the blades by pro-y longed use in eitherdirection. y
The shaft 'i is driven by means of the pinionc, whichis secured to the driving-pub' lo, secured to the rear end of the shaft i. Each bevel- -ley k', andwhich meshes 4into the bevel-wheel of the shaftsf has square grooves formed lonf,
gitudinally therein on opposite sides thereof, andthe exible rubbing-blades gV g are secured totheshaftsby meansofscrewspassingthrough them and through washers or plates g gf into the radial sides of the grooves, as shown at Figs. 5, 6, and 7, in which views the washers g g are tapering, so that the blades g g are oblique to the axes'of the shafts ff, which position it is desirablethey should occupyin treat-- ing some kinds of goods. In themail views of the drawings the blades are inline with the 9 o axes of the shafts,` so that their ends strike squarely on the goods. Y y 4 The flexible blades are each composed of a -central Spring-tempered steel rplatefand reenforcingside springs.
As before stated, all of the blades g g rotate in the same direction, but they are so set as not to strike or act on the goods j together. There are six sets of blades shown in the drawings; but this number may be varied as desired. rIhe first and fourth, second and fifth, and the third and sixth sets occupy similar angular positions, the angular differences between them being such that duringa short interval of time al1 of the blades are clear of the goods, thus allowing the goods to regain the normal tension due to the feeding device should it be altered by the action ot' the blades on theV goods.
It will he observed by referring to Fig. l that the blades g g are arranged on the shafts Affso that no two blades on different shafts are directly in line with one another, and it is necessary that the edges of the blades shall be opposed by or work on a uniform bed Y sur face, for which reason the leather straps e e are placed at an angle on the bed, so as to be di rectly under the blades.
It is found preferable to have the blades act on the goods in the direction in which they are drawn through the machine; and, to prevent the goods being drawn forward faster than the feeding device is set to act,the roller l, on which the goods are placed,is provided with a brake or retarding device, consisting of a strap, m, passing over the roller l, a lever, n, to one end of which the strap misfastened, and the weight o,p]aced on the other end ofthe lever n. This weight o is adjustable on the lever a, so that the friction between the strap m and roller l may be varied at pleasure. The rear and front guides,p and q, respectively, vary in height throughout their lengths in a similar manner to and for the same object asthe corresponding guides in my before-mentioned application; so it is here unnecessary to further enter into their construction. |The goods, after passing over the front guide, q, are wound up on the roller 1", which has a continuous rotary motion imparted to it by means of the worm-wheel r on its end, the worm s working therein and secured to the shaft ofthe conical pulley s', the reverse conical pulley t, driven by a gear-Wheel on the end of theshaft,a1id the connecting-belt 15.2 Thisbelt tzis controlled by the shifter u, actuated by thescrew u', provided with the hand- Wheel u, by the manipulation of which the belt t2 is shifted along the conical pulleys, and the speed of the windingnp roller r varied at pleasure.
The particular construction of the elastic bedb c d e and the guides p q shown in the drawings forms no part of the present invention, being described and claimed in my be fore-mentioned application.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a machine for finishing and polishing textile fabrics, in combination, an elastic bed, feeding mechanism for drawing thegoods over the bed, severalseries ofiiexible blades rotated in onedirection, arranged toact longitudinally on the goods and set in different angular positions, and devices for imparting a continuous rotary motion to the flexible blades, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for finishing and polishing,lr textile fabrics, in combination, an elastic bed, feeding mechanism for drawing the goods over the bed, several series of flexible blades rotated in one direction and arranged to actlongitudinally on the goods in the direction in which the goods travel over the bed, devices for imparting a continuous rotary motion to the flexible blades, and a brake or retarding device acting on the roller holding the goods, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Ina machine for finishing and polishing textile fabrics, in combination, feeding mechanism for drawing the goods through the machine, transversely-arranged shafts, devices for continuously rotating the shafts, flexible blades secured to the transverse shafts so as to occupy different lateral positions in relation to the goods, and an elastic bed provided with strips of leather obliquely arranged thereon, between which and the flexible blades the goods are drawn, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. f
4. In combination, the side shaft, t, provided with bevel-pinions hh, the shaftsff, provided with bevel-wheels hh on one of their ends and similar bevel-wheels, h2 h2, on their other ends, the flexible rubbing-blades g g, secured to the shafts f f, and the elastic bed c d e, sub-A stantially as set forth.
, In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of March, A. D. 1887.
