The sheet is adapted to be suitably warmed and wrapped or otherwise applied in its warmed condition to the afflicted joint portions of the body.

5 Claims, 2 Drawing Figures PATENIEDDEC 11 I975 3.7771754 1 MEDICATED DISPOSABLE PAD BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Arthritis and related ailments still defy curative treatment and at best, the intense pains incident to such ailments are relieved over relative short time periods by administering analgesics, such as aspirin orthe like.
Admittedly, in severe cases of such ailments, relief from pain in only partial and requires heavy dosages of the analgesics. In such cases, it is not unusual to find adverse side effects which may require a reduction or removal of the analgesic dosage. While certain therapeutic agents taken internally or by way'of injection, have been used; it has been found that in many instances such therapeutic agents also give rise to nude of the character described, which is constituted of a thin sheet of waxy material having selected volatile therapeutic agents distributed through the sheet; the sheet being adapted to be warmed immediately before application thereof to the afflicted portions of the body.
A further object of this invention is to provide a thin sheet of 'waxy material having volatile therapeutic agents distributed therethrough; the sheet being pack-v aged in an envelope of thin plastic film which permits the sheet to be warmed to elevated temperatures, then removed from the envelope and applied to the afflic'ted portions of the human body; the pain alleviating properties of the sheet being effective over extended periods of time. Still another object of this invention is to provide a pad of the character described, which comprises a sheet formed of waxy materials and having volatile therapeutic agents distributed ther'ethrough; the sheet being packaged in a plastic envelope. The package is warmed by immersion in boiling water and is thereafter opened to'allow the removal of the sheet in a warmed condition; such sheet then being applicable to the afflicted joint portions of the human body.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In accordance with the instant invention, a disposable pad is provided which may be warmed immediately before application to ajoint portion of the human body which is afflicted with arthritis or similar ailment and which is painful. Such a pad is essentially a thin pliable waxy sheet having volatile therapeutic agents dis- As shown in FIGS. 1, 2, of the drawing, the pad of the instant invention is generally indicated at 10. Such pad is of rectangular shape and comprises an envelope 11 formed of films of polyvinyl chloride or other suitable synthetic resin.
' The envelope 1] comprises opposed thin film panels 12, 13 of plastic material which are initially heat sealed together along side edges 14, 15 and one end edge 16 Film panel 12 is previously laminated to a thin reflective'metal foil 17 on one surface thereof so as to dispose such foil 17 interiorly of envelope 11, for the purpose hereinafter pointed out.
The envelope 11' is filled through its open end edge l8 with a composition adapted to be converted to a thin sheet form generally indicated at 19. To this end, the composition is prepared by premixing the following ingredients, by weight:
When the pad 10 is to be used; the envelope 11, which has been previously heat sealed along end edge 18; is placed in boiling water. The premixed composition within the envelope 11, fuses and when the envelope 11 is placed on a flat supporting surface, the composition takes a flat sheet form. The thus warmed sheet 19 is permitted to cool somewhat so as to become self sustaining.
The envelope 11 is then immediately cut about its edges to allow the pliable sheet 19 to be removed therefrom while still in a warm condition. The warm sheet I9 is then immediately wrapped about the afflicted body joint portion such as the wrist, fingers, elbows, ankles, shoulders or hips. Towelling or other supplemental covering may be applied over the waxy sheet 19, to conserve the heat of the sheet. Rubber bands or other retaining elements may be used to hold the wrappings and sheet in place.
When applied just before retiring for the night, it has been found that the sheet 19 is highly effective in markedly reducing arthritic pains. A warm moist condition is induced between the inner surface of the sheet 19 and the opposed body portion so as to facilitate the penetration of the volatile therapeutic agents by way of the pores of the skin. The effectiveness of the sheet 19 may extend over a period of from 12 to 24 hours.
The heat of the warmed sheet 19 may be further conserved by utilizing the envelope panel 12 with its reflective foil layer 17 as a covering over the applied sheet 19.
The premixed waxy composition may be used in an amount such that upon fusion when the envelope 11 is immersed in boiling water, the same will be converted into a sheet measuring about 13 X 4.5 X 0.25 inches; the envelope panels'l2, 13 being of appropriate dimensions. It is understood that sheet 19 and envelope 11 may be of other dimensions to suit the specific application thereof to selected body joint portions.
The constituents making up pliable sheet 19 maybe of varying proportions such as 20-40 parts of bees wax;
20-40 parts of paraffin; 15-25 parts of polyethylene glycol; 4.0-l0.0 parts of mineral oil; sulfur 0.75-2.50
parts; 7.0-20.0 parts of camphor; and 1.5-4.0 parts of iodine; all by weight.
1. A therapeutic pad for external application to joint portions of the human body, said pad comprising a mixture of medical compounds subject to be formed by heat into a flexible sheet form and to be wrapped about a selected joint body portion to alleviate arthritic pains therein, said sheet comprising essentially a mixture of bees wax, paraffin, polyethylene glycol, mineral oil and a mixture of volatile therapeutic agents, said mixture of therapeutic agents comprising sulfur, camphor and idine.
2. A pad as in claim 1, wherein the beeswax constitutes from 20-40 parts, the paraffin from 20-40 parts, the polyethylene glycol from -25 parts, the mineral oil from 4.0-l0.0 parts, the sulfur from 0.75-2.50
parts, the camphor from 7.0-20.0 parts, and the iodine from 1.5-4.0 parts, all by weight.
3. A pad as in claim 2 wherein the beeswax constitutes 29.0 parts, the paraffin 29.0 parts, the polyethylene glycol 21.0 parts, the mineral oil 6.0 parts, the sulfur 1.5 parts, the camphor l 1.0 parts and the iodine 2.5 parts.
4. In combination, an envelope and the composition of claim 1 disposed within said envelope, said envelope comprising a pair of thin panels of plastic film in superposed relation, said panels being secured together about the periphery thereof.
5. The combination of claim 4 wherein a thin reflective foil is secured to the inner surface of one of said panels.
