BINDING STRAP FOR COILED ARTICLES AND THE LIKE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a new and novel binding strap for coiled cords and the like.
It is often desired to store or transport articles in coil form such as electric cords, garden hoses and the like, but it is difficult to maintain such articles in a coil unless they are tied by twine or the like. Tying the coil at one or more places is time consuming, and even at that, the ends of the cord or hose are not firmly anchored in place and fall away from the coil so as to make the coil unhandy to handle and store.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention and forming a primary objective thereof, a binding strap is provided which has means for maintaining an article in coiled position and also for anchoring an end of the coil.
A more particular object of the invention is to provide a binding strap of the type described which has a main body portion arranged to be wrapped laterally around the coiled article for holding the coil together and which also has an auxiliary body portion which engages and holds an end of the coil.
The invention will be better understood and additional objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT With particular reference first to FIGS. 1 and 2, the strap of the instant invention comprises a main body portion made of suitable strapping material such as cloth, plastic, or the like. Secured to the main body portion adjacent to one end thereof is a male snap member 12. For reference purposes and as viewed in FIGS. 1 and 2, the male snap member 12 is directed upwardly. This snap member is located back from the one end of the body portion to form a pull tab 14 for a purpose to be described.
The opposite end 16 of the body portion 10 from the snap member 12 is doubled back in an auxiliary body portion 18. A downwardly facing male snap member 20 is secured on the auxiliary body portion 18 adjacent to the free end of the latter. This snap member is directed downwardly and is arranged for engagement with an upwardly facing female snap member 22 secured on the body portion inwardly from end 16.
Another female snap member 24 is provided on the body portion 10 and is located between end 16 and snap member 22. Snap member 24 is directed downwardly and serves as a rivet to secure body portion 10 and 18 together inwardly from the end 16. The distance between the snap members 20 and 24 is greater than the distance between the snap members 22 and 24 so that upon locked engagement of snap members 20 and 22, the auxiliary body portion 18 will have slack therein to form a loop 26, FIG. 3, for a purpose now to be described.
For binding a coiled article 28, an end 28a of the coil is first secured to the device by placing the auxiliary body portion 18 over the article adjacent to an end of the latter to form the loop 26 around the article and then connecting snap members 20 and 22. Such step is readily accomplished in one illustration by holding the strap upright with the end 16 up, or, with reference to FIG. 2, the end opposite from the end 16 is merely allowed to drop. The loop 26 is thus secured to an end portion 28a of the article as shown in FIG. 3. Thereupon, the main body portion 10 of the strap is wrapped clockwise around the coiled article. This inverts the position of the male snap member 12 and it can then be engaged with female snap member 24 to bind the coiled cord together. Such cord is thus held in a neat bundle for easy handling and storage, and if desired, two or more of these straps may be employed on the same bundle for more compactly holding the coil. Particularly, it may be desired to use another of the binding straps in the area of the other free end of the coil to also hold such end anchored.
It is preferred that the male snap member 20 be locked a short distance inwardly from the end of the auxiliary body portion 18 to form a pull tab 30 to release the loop 26 from the end 28a. Also, as stated, the snap member 12 is located inwardly from the one end to form the pull tab 14 which is used to release the strap from the article. It may be desirable to leave the strap connected to the end 28a of the article to prevent loss of the strap, in which case once the strap is installed, only the snaps l2 and 24 will be used. With the strap installed as above described, the end 16 and pull tab portion 30 are concealed and thus are out of the way. Also, the tab 30 cannot be accidentally engaged to unsnap the snap members 20 and 22.
FIG. 4 shows a somewhat modified arrangement wherein the body portion 10' has two or more male snap members 12' adjacent to the one end. With multiple ones of such male snap members, the body portion can accommodate coils of different diameter.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention herein shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:.
1. A binding strap for coiled articles having one or more free ends, comprising a. a flexible main body portion having opposite ends and being arranged to be wrapped laterally around a coiled article adjacent to a free end of the article,
e. said first fastener member securing said main body portion and said auxiliary body member together in said overlapping relation adjacent to said one end,
said auxiliary body portion a loop is formed so as to have locking engagement around one of the coils of the coiled article adjacent to a free end of the latter,
. and a third fastening member on said main body portion at the end opposite from said first fastener member arranged for locking engagement with the latter for wrapped holding engagement of said main body portion around the coiled article.
2. The binding strap of claim 1 wherein said fastener member adjacent to the free end of said auxiliary body portion is spaced inwardly from said free end so that the latter forms a pull tab and said third fastener is spaced inwardly from said opposite end of the main body portion whereby to also form a pull tab.
