BOOT-DRIER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,746, dated July 24, 1888.

Application filed October 9, 1886. Serial No. 215,782.

Be it known that 1, GnoRGE Anon Hnss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Maquoketa, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Drying the Interior of Vet Boots, Shoes, or Similar Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acconr panying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved device for drying boots or shoes and other articles, showing it placed in position upon a stove and with a boot shown in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.

My invention has relation to devices which may be placed over one of the fire-holes in a stove for drying boots, shoes, and similar articles by introducing heated air into the interior of the article to be dried by means of tubes; and it consists in the improved con struction and combination of parts of such a device, and more particularly to the tubes and the means for supporting the articles to be dried, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a base-plate having a downwardlyprojecting flange, the said plate and flange, which are numbered 2, fitting over the tireaperture ofa stove. Two (more or less) tubes, 3, project from the plate and have removable sleeves 4 fitting upon their upper ends, the upper ends of the said sleeves being provided with perforated sleeves or tubes 5 at their upper ends, preferably projecting from the sleeves at an obtuse angle.

A strip, 6, is secured at its lcwcrend to the upper end of each of the sleeves, projecting over the upper sides of the perforated tubes, and the tubes and sleeves will form supports for boots or shoes which may be placed over the tubes, the perforated tubes fitting into the feet of the shoes or boots, and the strips preventing the feet from resting against the upper (No model.)

Standards 7 project from the base-plate in the spaces between the tubes and serve for the purpose of supporting smaller articles to be dried, the upper ends of the standards be ing provided with hooks 8, from which the said articles may be supported.

Tubes 9 may be fitted upon the upper ends of the tubes in place of the sleeves and perforated tubes, and these tubes are provided with long bails or doubled strips 10, which form cages at the upper ends of the tubes, the said tubes with their cages serving to support gloves and mittens, stockings, or similar articles of wear.

It will now be seen that when the device is placed over the fire-hole of a stove the heated air will pass from the fire up into the boots or shoes, drying their interior, while the heat ascending from the stove will dry the exterior, and the fumes created by drying the interior of the articles will be carried through the tubes down into the fire, so that no disagreeable odor will be created inthe room where the articles are dried, and the perforated tubes at the upper ends of the sleeves will allow the heat to escape at all sides, drying the articles perfectly even, while the strips prevent the articles from resting against the perforated tubes and thus stop up the perforations. The perforated tubes, being secured at an oblique angle to the ends of the sleeves, will fit into the feet of the shoes or boots, so that the entire shoe or boot may be perfectly exposed to the heated air rising up through the tubes.

In a device for drying boots and similar articles, the combination of a base, tubes sccured thereto the upper ends of which are at an obtuse angle and perforated, and a strip secured to the upperends of each of said tubes and projecting over its upper side.
