SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,841, dated October 30, 1.889.

.To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. GILDE- Mnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haddoniield, in the county of Camden, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair Rod Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices employed to secure stair rods in position upon stairs, and especially to that class of such contrivances which are capable of being applied without requiring the rods in connection with which they are used to be slid endwise into position, and which fasteners are therefore largely used in securing rodsin position upon stairways which are so boxed in at the side by skirting boards, by wainscots, or by walls, that endwise move ment ofthe rod is precluded.

The object of my invention is the provision of a cheap, serviceable, and sightly stair rod fastener of the class above indicated.

In the drawings, Figure l is a central, vertical, sectional view of a stair rod fastener embodying my invention, showing a stair rod in place upon said fastener. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of my fastener, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a slightly modified construction of my device.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

In the drawings, A are the treads, and B the risers, of a flight of stairs.

C are stair rods, the same being of any preferred construction, it being only necessary in order to tit them for use in connection with my fastener, that they should be provided With the inturned flanges c.

D is what I term the keeper, the saine being any device which is capable of clasping the edges ofthe stair rod, and of being mounted upon or in connection with a staple or kindred device permanently secured on a stair riser and of being secured thereto by a key. The keeper D consists of a back web d, the topand bottom edges of which are bent forwardly, then bent downwardly in toward each other and then bent upwardly back each upon itself, so that two holders, d', as I term them, are formed. 5o ZX is an aperture formed in the center of the web.

E is a retaining device which may be either a staple, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or an ordinary screw eye as shown in Fig.. lt. The aperture dy and retaining` device E should be ofsueh proportions that the latter snugly [its said aperture and thereby prevents the keeper from moving. The forwardly bent upper and lower portions of the keeper are each provided with an aperture cl2. rlhese apertures are prefto erably of the same size and shape as the loop or eye ofthe retaining device E.

F is a key or pin, which is in Figs. 2 and 3 shown as square in cross section, and in Fig. 4 as round.

In operation, the retaining devices are placed in the stairs, and the keepers are slid upon the rods. The rods and keepers are then placed in proper position, when the retaining devices present through the apertures dx. The drop- 7o ping of the key through the apertures d'1 and through the loops of the retaining devices which are in registry therewith, effect the fastening of the rod to the stair.

An incidental advantage ofthe construction recited is that the upper end of the keeper is sufficiently elevated to render its aperture d plainly visible behind the rod, so that thekey is fitted thereinto with ease.

I do not herein claim or seek to cover a form SO of keeper secured by a stapleand vertical key, which keeper does not maintain its hold upon the stair rod by clasping its edges but on the contrary by encircling it-,-as a stair rod fastener embodying such construction forms the 35 subject of another application for patent filed by me in the United States Patent Office as Serial No. 276,364.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:-

4rlhe combination, to form a stair rod fastener of a staple, a key, and an apertured keeper having forwardly bent top 'and bottom portions the outer edges of which are formed with holders for the edges of the stair rod,and which forwardly bent portions embody key orifices, substantially as set forth.
