J. A. BRUDIN.
180.393.5363. Patented Nov. 27, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHAN A. BRUDIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,536, dated November 27,1888.
Application filed February 8,1888. Serial No. 263.330. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHAN A. BRUDIN, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, at present residing in New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Valve, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a novel form of valve which may be employed in many ways, but which is designed more especially for use in connection with flasks of aerated waterssuch as are known in the trade as siphons-- the invention consisting, essentially, of a pouchlike packing, a spring-pressed piston arranged in connection therewith, and a thumbpiece mounted to throw the piston against the tension of its spring, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of my improved form of valve, and Fig. 2 is a crosssectional view taken on line a: m of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 10 represents the barrel or body of the valve with which communication is established by means of an inductionport, ll, and an eduction-port, 12. Just within the port 12 the inner defining walls of the recess or chamber of the barrel 10 are inclined, as shown at 2, said inclined walls constituting the valve-seat.
The chamber within the barrel 10 consists of two compartments,of which the inner compartment,A,is of less diameter than the outer compartment, a shoulder, 3, being formed be tween the two compartments, which shoulder serves as a support or rest for a flange, 4, that is formed upon a pouch-like packing, 5, the flange 4 being held to the shoulder 3 by a washer, G, which washer is borne upon the inner edge of a threaded flange, 7, that is formed upon the cap 13, the walls of the larger compartment of the valvebarrel being threaded in order that they may be engaged by the thread of the flange 7.
The washer 6 is centrally apertured to provide for the passage of a valve-stem, 8, the plug or valve proper, which is shown at 14, being secured to that end of the stem which extends inward within the pouchlike packing 5, this valve being held against the end of the inner defining wall of the packing by a spiral spring,15,which is mounted between the valve and the washer 6. The outer end of the stem 8 is headed, and just within the head there is mounted a second washer, 9.
The walls of the valve barrel or body are apertured at a,and in flange 7 there is formed an aperture, b, which, when the cap is turned home, will register with the aperture a. A thumb-lever, 17, formed with a bearing-finger, 16, is passed downward through the apertures a and b,the lever being mounted upon a pin, 18, whereby, if the thumb-lever be thrown in the direction of the arrow shown in connection therewith, the stem 8, and with it the valve l4,will be drawn back against the tension of the spring 15, thus leaving the end of the pouch-like packing free to collapse when subjected to any pressure from within the chamber A.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- '1. The combination, with a barrel formed with a valve-chamber and seat, of a flanged pouch-like packing, an apertured washer for holding the packing in place, a valve arranged within the pouch-like packing, and provided with a stem projecting through the washer, a spring surrounding the valve-stem within the pouch-like packing, and with its ends resting against the valve and washer, and means for moving the valve against the tension of the spring, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the slotted barrel 10, provided with the induction-port 11, the eduction-port 12, the valve seat 2, and the shoulder 3, of the flanged pouch-like packing 5, the apertured washer (5, for securing the pouch-like packing in place, the valve 14 in the pouch-like packing, and having its stem 8 projecting through the aperture of the washer and carrying on its end a washer, the spring 15, surrounding the valve stem in the pouch-like packing and abutting against the valve and washer, and a thumb-lever pivoted in the slot of the barrel and provided with a finger engaging the washer carried by the valve-stem, substantially as herein shown and described.

. 5 Correction in Letters Patent No. 393,536;
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 393,536, granted November 27, 1888,
upon the application of Johan A. Brudiu, of New York, N. Y., for an improvement in Valves, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction as follows:
In line 3, the Words citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, should be stricken out and the words, subject of the King of Sweden, inserted; and that the Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 8th day of January, A. D. 1889.
