FACE-SHIELD FOR ATOMIZERS.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMEON H. JENNINGS, of Deep River, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a newlinprovement in Face-Shields for Steam'Atomizers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description 01. the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for administering medicine by inhalation and to that class of apparatus in which medicated steam is received by the patient, commonly called steam-atomizers.
The medicated steam is thrown from the apparatus toward the patient in a jet or spray, and to receive the medicine the patient is provided with a tube, which is presented to the mouth or to the nose, accordingly as it is desired to inhale the steam through the nose or mouth. This tube is provided with a shield at its outer end as a protection for the face, the tube openingfrom the center of the shield, as from a funnel, and the tube terminates in CODVBlllGHb shape for introduction to the nose or to the mouth. I11 the usual construction the tube for the mouth is contracted into a flattened shape, so as to be conveniently taken in the mouth; but for the nose the tube terminates in a single opening adapted to be introduced into either nostril, so that two tubes are required for inhalation, accordingly as it is desired to make such inhalation through the nose or 7 through the mouth, and under the usual con- 'struction the inhalation can only be made through one nostril at the same time.
The object of my invention is to construct the shield with a tube adapted to both the nose and the mouth and to both nostrils instead of one, as heretofore; and it consists in a shield having a tube opening therefrom, the tube contracted into flattened shape toward its delivery end and terminating in two projecting nipples corresponding to the nostrils of the nose, the nipples forming two openings from the delivery-tube, and so that the delivery end may be readily taken in the mouth, or the same end may be applied by the introduction of v the nipples into the two nostrils, as more fully hereinafter described.
A represents the shield, which is of the usual form and of size suflicientto protect the face from the discharge of the steam. From this shield the tube B extends, the tube opening through the shield in the usual man ner, and as seen in Fig. 3, the shield being at the receiving end of the tube. floward the delivery end the tube is contracted into flattened shape, as seen in Fig. 4, and terminates in two nipples, C. These nipples each open into the tube, and so as to form two diseharge-openin gs from the delivery end of the tube. These two nipples are in shape and such relation to each other as to correspond to the nostrils of the nose, and so that the nipples may be inserted into the nostrils, and thus form a delivery into both nostrils at the same time. The flattened shape of the end of the tube which terminates in the said two nipples also makes a convenient shape for the mouth, so that the flattened end, in
cluding the nipples, may be readily taken in the mouth, and thus the patient may receive the medicated steam directly into the mouth or into the nose, as the case may be. Under this construction a single shield serves the purpose for either the nose or mouth, with the additional advantage that when receiving through the nose the instrument is applied to both nostrils instead of one, as in the usual construction.
I claim-- The herein-described face-shield for steamatomizers, consisting of the shield A, the receiving-tube B, leading therefrom and con tracted into flattened shape toward the de livery end, the delivery end terminating in two nipples, C, the said nipples forming two independent tubular openings at the delivery end of the tube, substantially as and for the purpose described.
