Be it known that I, JAMES P. EGAN, of thc city, county, and State of New4 York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pen-Holders, of Which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in pen-holders, and has for its object to provide a pen-holder having a rigid handle and a Aflexible pen-receiver, and also to provide a means whereby the degree of ilexibility may be regulated at will.
A further object of the invention is to provide a penholder which will render the pen capable of an elastic movement on the paper to be written upon.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several part-s, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar iigures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved pen-holder, illustrating the construction when a tubular handle is employed. Fig. 2 is a centralvertical section on line a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line @j y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is aplan View of the holder, illustrating the construction when a solid handle is used; and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section on line 5 .e of Fig. 5.
The handle 10 of the pen-holder may be either tubular, as shown in Fig. 1, or solid, as shown in Fig. 5. Each form of handle is provided With an elastic or iiexible pen-receiver 11, somewhat different in the details of construction.
I will first describe the receiver adapted for attachment to a tubular handle. In this connection the pen-receiver is constru\cted of a solid piece of pliable rubber or equivalent material, comprising a shank or body 12, of a diameter and contour corresponding with the inner bore of the handle, and a head 13, at or near the center of which a semicircular cut or recess 14 is produced capable of receiving the body of a pen 15. The head of the flexible receiver 11 is preferably provided In practice the shank of the receiver is forced a suitable distance into the bore of the handle, as shown in. Figs. 1 and 2. Then the receiver 11 is to be attached to a solid handle, one end of said handle is preferably reduced in diameter, as at present, for t-he reception of a metal receiver, and the shank is made longer and tubular at the end to slide over the said reduced extremity of the handle, as shown in Fig. (3.v In other respects the construction of the receiver is the same as heretofore described, with this addition, namely: A sleeve 18 is held to slide upon the exterior of the shank between the inner extremity and the head. The object of this sleeve is to regulate the degree of elasticity or pliability of the solid portion of the receiver. Then the sleeve is slid over the tubular portion of theA shank, a maximum de-v grec of elasticity is obtained and the elasticity is reduced by carrying the sleeve in direction of the head.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and' desire to secure by Lettersy Patent- 1. In a pen-holder, the combination, with a handle,lof a flexible pen-receiver consisting of a shank attached to the handle, and a head having a pen-slot produced thereon, and a shield secured to the head provided with a slot registering with the slot in said head, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a handle, of a flexible pen-receiver comprising a shank attached tothe handle, a head having apen-slot therein, and a shield secured to the head provided with a slot registering with the shankslot, and a sleeve capable of sliding upon theshank,substantially as shown and described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a flexible pen-receiver comprising a shank, a head provided with a pen-slot at or near the IOO center, a plate secured to the said head provided With a slot registering with the sl1ankslot, substantially as shown and described.
4. As an improved article of manufacture, a flexible peu-receiver comprising a shank, a head provided w ith apen-slot, a plate secured to said head provided with a slot registering with the shank-slot, and a sleeve capable of sliding upon the shank, substantially as shown and described.
