COMBINED STAND AND PAD OR TABLET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,340, dated August 20, 1889.

Application filed March 8, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY H. UNZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stands and Pads or Tablets, of which the following is a true and exact description, due reference being had to the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification.

My invention consists in an improved construction of wing or lip for the stand, and an improved form of pad adapted to be held by said lip or wing, and also an improved form of upper surface of the stand, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawings, Figure l. is a perspective View of a stand, showing my improved lip or wing. Fig. 2 is a section on line so an, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 show a form of pad adapted to be used with the stand shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5 shows a form of blank from which the stand may be formed from a single piece of metal. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing stand with my improved wing used on the side of the stand. Fig. 7 is a section on line y y, Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a section of a pad adapted to be used with the lips or wings at the side of the stand, as shown, Figs. 6 and 7. Fig. 11 is a form of pad, showing downward projection from the surface of the body of the pad, adapted to rest in the recess in the improved base shown in Fig. 0. Fig. 13 is a section of pad, showing an upward and downward projection, the one adapted to be held by the lip and the other to rest in the recess in the base of the stand of Fig. 12.

A' is the stand, which is preferably made with an inclined top, as shown in the drawings. From this stand project one or more inwardly-extending overhanging wings B, said wings being provided at theirinner ends with a downward projection Z). made integral with the remainder of the stand orformed separately and then firmly secured to said stand. The tablet or pad D is formed, as illustrated in the drawings,with an upweirdly-projecting surface, as shown in Figs. 3, 4., 7, and 8, said projecting surface being either on the end of the pad or sides, and is of such size and character that it can be inserted under the wing B and held in place from movement by the downwardly-projectin lip 19 of said wing. The base L of the stand is constructed with a recess 0 at or near its upper end, as seen in Figs. 9 and 12, and the pad or tablet is provided with a downwardlyprojecting surface 0, projecting beyond the main body of the pad or tablet, as shown in Figs. 11 and 13, and is adapted to rest in the recess 0. One or more beads E at the sides or ends, or both sides and ends, of the stand may be used, if desired, to prevent lateral movement of the pad or tablet.

I can use the stand with lip or wings, as described, with a pad or tablet having only an upwardly projecting surface, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, S, and 9, or, if the pad be constructed with a downwardly-projecting surface, as shown in Fig. 11, I may dispense with the use of the downwardly-projecting portion Z) of the wings or lips B, as shown in Fig. 0, or I can use a pad having both an upward and downward projecting surface, and the wing or lip having the downward-projecting portion 1), as shown in Figs 12 and 13. In the drawings the wings are shown on the sides and on the end, and it is evident that they can be used either on the side or end and can consist of a single wing or lip ortwo or more lips or wings, as it is only necessary that the pad should be constructed with projections at the proper position to conform to said wings or lips.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

1. As a new article of manufacture, astand provided with an inwardly-extending wing, said wing being provided at its inner end with a downward projection.

2. In combination, a pad or tablet, a base upon which said pad or tablet rests, an inwardly-extending overhanging Wing, said wing being provided at its inner end with a downward projection, thepad or tablet being provided with a projecting surface which will pass under the wing and be held in position by the downward projection of the wing.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a pad or tablet provided with a downwardly-extending surface projecting from the pad or tablet, said projecting surface being adapted to hold the pad or tablet in place on a stand or base.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a pad or tablet provided with upwardly or downwardly projecting surfaces, said projecting surfaces being adapted to hold the pad or tablet in place on a stand or base.

5. As a new article of manufacture,a stand provided with an inwardly-extending overhanging wing and a recess in its upper surface, extending entirely across the stand.

6. As a new articleZof manufacture, a stand provided with an inwardly-extending wing, said wing being provided at its inner end with a downward projection and a recess in theupper surface of said stand.

7 In cambinaticn, a stand provided with a recess in its upper surface and a pad having a downwardly-projecting surface adapted to rest in the same recess.

8. In combination, a stand provided witha recess in its upper surface and inwardly-projecting wings or lips, and a pad or tablet having a downwardly-projecting surface adapted to rest in said recess in the stand.

9. In combination, a stand providedwith an inwardly-extending overhanging wing, said wing being provided at its inner end with a downward projection and a recess in the upper surface of said stand, apad or tablet having upwardly and downwardly projecting surfaces, the upward-projecting surface being adapted to pass under the wing and be held in position by the downward projection of the wing and the downwardly-proj ecting surface of the pad or tablet being adapted to rest in the upper surface of the stand.

10. As a new article of manufacture, apad or tablet provided with an upwardly-extending surface projecting from the pad or tablet, said projecting surface being adapted to hold the pad or tablet in place on a stand or base.
