Be it known that I, BENJAMIN II. BARR, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVheelbarrows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a side elevation of the frame and showing a rear View of the body in the position it takes when the load is discharged. Fig. II is a rear elevation showing the body in an upright position. Fig. III is a front elevation showing the body thrown over to one side of the frame and showing in dotted lines its upright position.
My invention relates to a device whereby the load in awheelbarrow may be readily discharged without changing the frame from its normal position; and my invention consists of features of novelty hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
My preferred manner of construction is in making the frame of gas-pipe and the body of iron, as shown in the drawings; but I do not confine myself to this manner of construction.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the legs, which are connected at their upper ends by a brace 2 and at their lower ends by a brace or rod 3.
4 represents a bar connecting the legs 1 with a yoke 5.
6 represents the wheel, which is journaled to the yoke 5 near its lower end.
7 represents a brace extending from the rod 3 to the bar 4.
8 represents the handles, which are secured at the upper ends of the legs 1 to the frame.
9 represents the body, which is pivoted to the bar 4c by means of hooks 10, one end of each hook being secured rigidly to the body.
11 represents a collar on the bar 4, said collar having a set-screw 12, by which it may be held firmly to any desired position on the bar, the collar preventing any longitudinal movement of the hooks 10.
13 represents spring-catches secured at their lower ends to the brace 2. The catches are provided near their upper ends with rings or hooks 14, which the operator may grasp in order to pull the catches back, when it is desired to do so.
15 represents lugs on the body 9,with which the spring-catches l3 engage when the body is in an upright position.
The operation is as follows: As the body is pivoted to the central bar 4, all that is necessary to do when the operator desires to discharge the load is to pull back one of the catches 13 (according to whichever side he wishes to deposit the load) and tip the body to one side, as shown in Figs. I and II, or vice versa, as may be desired. After the load is discharged the operator returns the body to its upright position, as shown in Fig. II, where it is held securely by the spring-catches 13 coming into engagement with the lugs 15.
I claim as my invention 1. In a Wheelbarrow, the combination of the bar Al, supported by the wheels 6 and legs 1, and body 9, and suitable means for connecting said body with said bar, whereby the body may be tipped to either side while the wheel and legs remain in an upright position, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In awheelbarrow, the combination of the bar 4:, legs l,wheel 6, yoke 5, body 9, and hooks 10, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a wheelbarrow, the combination of the frame l, having suitable supports, body 9, hooks l0, and collar 11,having a set-screw 12, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. Inawheelbarrow, the combination of the legs 1, bar 2, rod 3, bar 4, yoke 5, wheel 6, brace 7, handles 8, body 9, hooks 10, collar 11, spring-catches 13, and lugs 15, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
