PATENT OFFICE,"
JEFFERSON JONES, OF WALDRON, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE WV. HILE AND FREEMAN C. MAS ON, BOTH OF RANSOM, MICHIGAN.
PERM UTATlON-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,629, dated December 3, 1889,
, Application filed May 28, 1888. Serial No. 275,336- (Model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON P. J ONES, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Wal dron, in the county of Hillsdaleand State of Michigan, have invented certain new and.
provision of a lock of this nature which can- -not be opened by feeling. and sound, and in.
which the combination can be changed as often as may be desired without the necessity of having to remove the tumblers from their shaft. The bolt-lockin g lever is weighted at its outer end and its inner endis normally held off from the tumblersthat is, it does not rest or ride on the tumblers-and if caused to bear upon the tumblers by-operating the knob-shaft the tumblers cannot be moved only a limited distance because of the stops provided on their periphery engaging with the said lever. The locking-lever is operated by a lifting-arm that is keyed to a sleeve,
mounted on the knob-shaft, said sleeve having a thumb-piece or head on its outer end to be grasped betweenthe fingers for operating it. This lifting-arm serves as a supplemental means for locking the locking-bolt when the said bolt is projected.
The improvement consists of the novel features, which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which-- tional View through the knob-shaft, showing the sleeve and the lifting-arm; Fig. 8, adeshowing the lifting-finger in position,an d
Fig. 9 shows detail views of otherthree tumblers.
.The tumbler-shaft A and the knob a with its graduated base are of usual construction.
The tumblers B are constructed alike, and a detailed description of one will sufficefor each. The tumbler is provided with a series of notches b in its periphery and a series of pins or stops 1). are filled with removable blocks 0, which come flush with the periphery of the tumbler. Any one of the blocks 0 can be removed and inserted in the vacant notch to efiect a change in the combination. The pins or stops I) extend a short distance from the periphery of the tumbler to engage with the locking-leverD,if the same is caused to bear against the tumbler and prevent a free move- All of the notches save one ment of the said tumbler except in the space between two of the said pins or stops, thereby preventing the feeling of the look by unauthorized persons to ascertain the combination. The central opening of the tumbler is larger than the tumbler-shaft and receives the tubular extension of the keeper E, on which the tumbler is mounted. The side of the tumbler isprovided with the recess b within which the arm ctflprojecting from the.
arranged in series, the distance between the sides of the stop will vary for each tumbler. This variation is eifected in one of two wayseither by widening the stop 12 or providing a second stop I), which is placed at different distances from the stop b The first tumbler of the series has the greatest movement relative to the shaft A, and the last tumbler of of the lever when the notches in the tumblers are in alignment. The ears e proj ecting from the edges of the keepers are thickened or provided with the lugs e on their rear sides, which space the keepers apart to permit the tumblers to work freely between each two of the keepers without any binding. The
lugs and the ears are perforated and the bolts 1), passing through the perforations, bind the keepers together and secure them to the door. The tumbler-shaft has a bearing in eachof the keepers and the tumblers are mounted on the tumbler-extensions of the keepers. v
Th e mainlocking-boltF is centrally disposed and is provided with the upper and the lower arms f and f,which engage with the upper and. the lower locking-bolts G and G, respectively, the ends of the arms fitting in notches in the weighted and rests on the bolt F, and drops in the notch f in the said bolt F to lock it when projected. This lever is disengaged from the bolt F by the lifting-arm 7a, which is keyed to the sleeve K, mounted on the knob-shaft, the outer endof the sleeve having the head or thumb piece 7o,which is grasped between the thumb and fingers to rotate the sleeve and elevate the arm and lever D. The arm'k fits in a recess f in the bolt F when the bolt F is projected, and in connection with the lever D holds the bolt projected.
The vertical bolts L and M overlap or extend across the bolt F, and have projections or studsl and m, respectively, which fit in notches in the disk H.
bolts L and M respectively.
When the door to which the lock is applied is open and the several bolts are retracted, the lifting-arm It will have its end resting on the locking-bolt and the lever Dwill have its outer end also resting on the said bolt and its inner end fitted in the notches in the keepers and the tumblers. When the bolts are projected, the end of the arm 7t will drop in the recess in the boltF and the locking-lever D will engage with and lock the said bolt F. The inner end of the locking-lever D stands at a sufficient distance from the tumblers to The auxiliary bolts N and 0 have notches which receive the ends of the rods Z and m, which project from the clear the pins or stops l) thereof and permit tumblers in either claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
iss 1. In a combination-lock, the combination, with a tumbler having a series of notches in its periphery, of a series of removable and interchangeable blocks whereby the combination can be changed without removing the tumbler from its support or shaft, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combination-lock, the combination, with the tumbler and a locking-lever, of a series of pins or stops projecting from the periphery of the tumbler to engage with the said locking-lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the tumbler-shaft and the keepers having a tubular extension and lateral ears, of the tumbler mounted on the tubular extension of the keepers, and the bolts for securing the keepers together, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the tubular shaft, the series of keepers'having ears, which ears are thickened at their ends and are perforated and having notches in their edges and tubular extensions, the bolts passing through the perforations in the said ears and binding the keepers together and securing them to the door, the tumblers mounted on the tubular extensions of the keepers and having recesses in their sides of varying lengths,
and the arms projecting from the tubular shaft and working in the said recesses of the tumblers, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the tumblers, the locking-lever, the locking-bolt, and the knobshaft, of the sleeve mounted on the knobshaft, and the lifting-arm keyed to the sleeve and adapted to disengage the locking-lever
