} No. 422,670. I PatentedMar. 4, 1890.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,670, dated March 4, 1890.

Application filed February 28, 1889! Serial No. 301,522. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ARTHUR HENRY WAL- LACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houghton, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in scissors; and it consists in a combination, with scissors, of various other useful implements, as hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of scissors embodying the improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail of the button-hole cutter. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the handles on the line a; a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View through the blade on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a partial side view of the same, showing the graduated slide extended. s. Fig. 6 is a view showing the file.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A A designate the blades of the improved scissors, which are pivoted together in the ordinary manner, and are provided, respectively, with the handles B B, having finger-rings Z) Z) at their free ends.

The blade Ais graduated or provided with a scale of inches, as shown at O, and is also provided with a longitudinal dovetailed slot (1, in which is fitted the dovetailed graduated slide D, which is adapted to be extended beyond the end of the blade to form an extension of the scale C. The blade A is provided on its outer side with an angular longitudinal groove E, having a roughened or serrated back, thereby forming a nail-file.

The handles are provided in their inner sides,'near the pivot, with the notches F F, which form a wire-cutter, and small cutters G G, having concaved cutting-edges, are secured to the inner sides of the handles near their pivoted ends and form a convenient cigar-cutter.

II designates a button-hole blade, which is affixed to the inner side of one of the ban dles and cuts against a block 11' on the inner side of the other handle. The blade consists of the tubular portion hand the straight portion h.

One of the handles is further provided with a recess or needle-holder I, over which are fitted the sliding plates or covers K K on both sides of the handle.

A 'folding corkscrew L is hinged to the outer side of one of the handles, and a folding awl M is hinged to the outer side of the other handle, as shown clearly in the drawlugs.

A screw-driver N is formed on the extremity of the ring I), and a tack-clawO is formed on the extremity of the ring I), and P designates a hammer-head,which is formed on one side of the ring I).

It will be seen from the foregoing description that the device forms a convenient combination-tool, which may be cheaply manufactured.

The nail-file hereinbefore described is set back from the edge of the blade of the scissors to aitord a rest for the ball or end of the finger to rest on while filing.

The scale or measure is shown on the outside of the blade in the drawings; but it may be placed on the inside.

' Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The scissors having one of its blades provided with a scale of inches and a longitudinal dovetail slot on one side of the scale, and the graduated slide fitting in said slot and having its outer face flush with the face of the blade and adapted to be extended so as to form a continuation of the scale on the blade, the graduation of the slide and the scale being in the same plane, substantially as described.

2. The herein a described scissors, having one of its blades provided. with a scale and the other blade provided with a roughened or serrated groove, and having handles provided with recesses or needle-holders I, the sliding plates fitting over the said recesses, the screw driver and tack-claw on the ends of the handles, the corkscrew and awl attached to the outer sides of the handles, and

the hammer-head affixed to one of the hanmy own I have hereto affixed my signature dles substantially as specified. in presence of two Witnesses.

3. The scissors provided With the recess I designed to receive needles, and the sliding ARTHUR HENRY WALLACE 5 plates fitting over said recess, substantially Witnesses:

as described. 11. L. PADDOCK,

In testimony that I claim the foregoing as JOSEPH SOHULES.
