.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LROBERT FRANKEN, of Pomona, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Hose-Couplin g, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to hose-couplings, the objects of the invention being to simplify the construction of such couplings and at the same time to provide a coupling which may be readily coupled and uncoupled, and which when in the coupled position will effectively hold the coupling-sections against accidental displacement.
To the ends above named the invention consists of certain novel constructions, arrangements, and combinations of elements, to be hereinafter fully explained, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side View of my improved hosecoupling, the parts being represented as they appear when in the coupled position. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the receiving-section of the coupling. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the entering section of the coupling. Fig. l is an end view of the coupling, taken from the point indicated by the arrow marked a, and shown in connection with Fig. 1; and Fig. 5' is a cross-sectional View on line 00 x of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 10 represents the receiving-section of the coupling, which said section is provided with a packing-ring 11, said ring abutting against a shoulderb, formed at the inner end of the flaring mouth 12. Upon opposite sides of the section 10 there are formed slots 0 c, that are adapted to receive lugs or projections 13, which extend outward from the peripheral face of the entering section 20, which said face is inclined, as represented. The section 10 is formed with bosses 14, 14, and 15, the bosses 14 and 14 serving as the support for a latch 16, which said latch is pivotally mounted. between the bosses, while the boss 15 serves as a bearing for the latch when the two coupling-sections are in the coupled position.
In order that the latch may be normally held in the position in which it is shown in full lines in Figs. 4 and 5, I arrange a spring 17, as represented, said spring bearing upon a loop 71, and acting to throw the latch to the position shown.
In coupling, one of the lugs 13 is passed into the slot 0 to the rear of the latch 16, the other projection being passed into the slot 0, the latch 16 at this time being thrown to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. After the entering section has been adjusted, as just described, the latch is released and will be forced forward by the spring, so as to bring an inclined bearing-face, which is indicated by the dotted line '6, in Fig. 1, to bear against the outer face of the lug which rests within the slot 0. Then if the latchbe forced downward its forward face will bear against the lug 15 and its rear face against the lugs 13, and the inner end of the entering section will be forced against the packing-ring 11.
By providing the latch 16 with a spring, as above described, I prevent the falling out of the latch, and hence hold it in a position where it is not liable to injury at times when the hose is being dragged along the ground.
In the construction shown in the drawings the entering section 20 is provided with a packing-ring 70, this construction being employed when the entering section is to be applied to a hydrant.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a hose-coupling, the combination of a receiving-section provided with slots, a boss adjacent to one of the slots and ears on the side opposite the boss, an entering section provided with lugs adapted to enter the slots of the receiving-section, a latch pivoted in the ears of the entering section and having its free end projecting between the boss of the receiving section and one of the lugs of the entering section, and a spring for holding the latch closed, substantially as described.
