BUNG AND BUSHING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,115, dated April 22, 1890.

Be it known that I, GEORGE M. DOERsOH, of Oentreville, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bun gs and Bushings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top or outside view of my improved bung and bushing. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the bung and bushing on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing also the removable handle, by the aid of which the bung is turned down to its scat. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 of the bushing forming a part of the bung, showing the interior wall of the bushing on one side. Fig.4 is a perspective view of a portion of the handle. Fig. 5 is acentral sec tion of a modified form of bung.
The bushing A is constructed of metal, and is provided with a screwthread B 011 the periphery of the part that is intended to enter and be fixed in the wall of a barrel, and an outwardlyprojecting flange 0 is provided, which projects out over the edge of the surrounding wall of the barrel and rests thereon, forming a cover to the joint between the bush. ing and wall of the barrel. Near the inner end of the bung, entirely around on its inner surface, is an outwardly facing ledge D, adapted to receive the packing of the bung against its surface. Two inwardly-inclincd or screw-formed grooves E E are cut in the inner surface of the bushing near its outer edge, each extendin nearly one half the dis tance around the bushing, and short channels F F are cut in the walls of the bushing from its outer surface directly to the outer ends of the grooves E E.
The bung consists of an inner plate or keeper G, an outer plate II, a cover I, and a packing K, held together by a screw L, provided with a nut N.
The inner and outer plates G- and II and the cover Iare preferably constructed of metal and are circular in form. The inner plate G is of such size as to enter within the bushing A opposite the projection formed below. the ledge D, and though preferably of metal may be of hard rubber or any other material not liable to be injured by the action of beer or other liquids, of sufficient firmness to form a reliable keeper for the packing. The outer plate H is of such size as to fit loosely in the bushing above the ledge D, and the packing K, preferably formed of rubber disks or rings of about the same size as the plate H, is secured to the inner surface of plate H, and near its outer edge is adapted to engage the ledge D in such manner that, being forced firmly down upon the ledge, as hereinafter described, it forms an air and liquid tight joint therewith. The screw L passes loosely through the cover I and turns by its screwthread into the plate II, extends loosely through the packing K and plate G, and is provided with a nut N, turning thereon against the plate G, whereby the plate G is clamped tightly against the packing K, holding it firmly in position againstthe plate 11. The cover I is rotatable 011 the screw L independently of the plate II, and is preferably provided with a bearing in the form of a ring T, projecting slightly inwardly from its inner surface and adapted to bear against and travel on the plate II. This cover I is provided with two opposite lugs M M, extending outwardly laterally from its periphcry,which lugs are adapted to enter the groovesEE through the channels F F and to travel in and be guided by the walls of the grooves E E, as the cover is rotated when the bung is in position in the bushin The cover I is provided with an angled socket 0, formed centrally in its outer surface, which socket is provided with an under-cut 0, preferably in two sides of the walls of the socket opposite each other. A handle P, having an angled head It of a size and form to fit the socket O and a laterally projecting lug S, is adapted to be inserted in the socket, whereby conveniently to rotate the cover I. The head of the handle is retained in its place in the socket O by the lug S, which enters the undercut 0.
It will be understood. that when the bung is placed in the bushing, the lugs M M being entered in the channels F F, by inserting the handle in the cover I and rotating it the lugs M M will follow the grooves E E inwardly, as well as around the bushing, and the packing K will be forced tightly against the ledgeD ofthe'bushing, whereby an air and water tight joint will be made between the bushing and hung.
In the modified form of bung shown in Fig. 5 the cover I is provided with a beveled inner surface to provide a' limited bearing against the plate H, and the ring T shown n Fig. 2 is omitted. The plate H is constructed with a step U and a groove V around it near its inner surface, and ,aorpaeking-ring K is placed against the step and enters the groove V, whereby it is held in place on the plate H. This packing-ring K serves the purpose of the disks K shown in Fig. 2, and this form of construction obviates the use of a keeper G" and nutN. In this form of bung a screw L is used, which passes through the cover I loosely and turns into the plate H, but does not extend beyond it.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of a circular bushing having a ledgeon and screw-formed grooves in its inner surface,a circular bung having a packing fitting against the ledge of the bushing, a thereto-attached rotatable cover having lugs adapted to enter and travel in the screwformed grooves in the bushing, and also having a central laterally-faced socket provided with under-cuts in two directions opposite each other, a handle having a, head faced laterally to fit the lateral faces of the socket in the cover of the bung, and a foot or lug projeeting laterally therefrom in one direction and adapted to enter either under-cut of the socket in the cover of the bung, substantially as described.
