TYPE-WRITER CABINET.

Be it known that I, MELviN BANcEoFT, of Yhitesborough, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Triter Cabinets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in type-writer cabinets.

In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, and in which similar numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 shows a front elevation of my case, the case" being open. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section on line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a cross-section von the same line, the case being closed and the mechanism mounted on the movable table inclosed within the case. Fig. 4 is a detail view substantiallyon the same line with A Bof Fig. 1, showing the movements of movable parts in the machine.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the case, having a central well, determined by the back 2 and the sides 3 and 4 upon either side thereof. The case is provided with a cover 5,'which consists of the sections 5fL and 5b, hinged to each other and hinged to the oase at 6, the cover covering or closing the top of the well. Vithin the case I provide swinging arm 7, pivoted to the walls 3 and 4 of the case at the point 8. The lower extremity vof the arm 7 is hinged to movable platform 9 by hinge 10.

11 indicates a strip of material, preferably l of wood, extending from one of the arms 7 to the opposite one and rigidly secured to each.

12 indicates a strip extending between the arms at the upper end, preferably of iron or metal, and which also acts as a weight or counter-balance to the platform and mechanism mounted thereon, the strip 12 being made proportionately heavy in order to answer this purpose. A projection 13 is provided upon each of the walls 3 and 4 of the case, which supports the outer end of the platform when inclosed and supports the platform when the same is drawn out into position for use. Projection 13 maybe provided with a little Wheel or anti-friction roller, in order that the platform may move over thesame with ease, or it may be a roller or rod extending from the wall 4 to the wall 3 and secured in each. A projection 14 upon each of the walls 3 and 4 is provided, adapted to engage the inner end of the platform from the upper side and prevent its tilting over the projection 13 when the greater amount of weight upon the platform is outside of projection 13, as is usual when the platform is drawn into position for use.

Ashelf-stop 15 is provided, extending from the rear Wall or back into the case, upon or against which the inner end of the platform rests or engages when the same is closed. The shelf-stop 15, together with the downwardly-projecting portion 5C of the cover of the well, entirely incloses the mechanism mounted on the platform when the case is closed.

The pivotal point of the arms 7 and their construction are such that as the arms swing from the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4 to the position shown in Fig. 3 the upper end of the arm raises the cover automatically, substantially as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, so that the mechanism mounted on the platform will pass into the Well of the case with out coming in contact with the cover.

The arm 7 and the bars 11 and 12 form arigid substantially rect-angular frame, to which the platform is hinged. The platform may be hinged directly to the arm 7, but preferably to the bar 1l between the arms. The rigid4 frame causes the platform to move without liability of skewin g and binding.

In usingthe case the fore part of the lid is turned over, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, until it rests upon the rear portion 'of the cover or lid. Then by grasping the platform it is drawn forward from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2, during which Swingin g movement the arm raises the lid, as indicated in Fig. 4, and permits the mechanism mounted on the platform to be withdrawn 'without coming in contact with the lid.

It is evident that the construction described may be modified or varied without departingfrom the spirit of my invention or the equivalents of my construction.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, in a type-writer cabinet having a well, of the cover to the well, the movable platform, the downwardly and rearwardly swinging arms hinged at one end to the inner end of the platform and pivoted to the walls of the well and having a counter-weight at the opposite side of the pivot from the end to which the platform is hinged, and the projection upon the front of the case which supports the platform and over which it slides.

2. The combination, in a type-writer case having a well, of the cover, the movable platform, the downwardly and rearwardly swinging arms hinged to the inner end of the platform at one extremity and pivoted to the wall of the case and having the opposite eX- tremity from that to which the platform is attached adapted to engage and raise the cover as the arm is swinging on its pivot, and the projection adapted to support the platform, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, in a type-writer cabinet, of the rigid frame pivoted at its opposite ends to the opposite walls of the well, and the movable platform hinged at its inner end to one side of the rigid frame, and the prol jection adapted to support the platform, substantially as set forth.

4:.' The combination, in a type-writer cabinet having a well, of the cover of the well, the rigid frame pivoted at` its opposite ends to the opposite inclosing-walls of thewell, the movable platform hinged at its inner end to the lower side of the frame, the support in `the front portion of the well for the platform and over which it slides in its movement, and the shelf-stop against which the inner end of the platform engages in its closed position, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, in a type-Writer cab inet having a well, of the cover to the well, the rigid frame pivoted at its opposite ends to the walls of the well, its upper side being adapted to engage the lid and operate the same, the movable platform hinged to the lower side of the frame, the supporting projections for the platform, and the shelf-stop against which the inner end of the platform is adapted to rest, substantially as set forth.

6. The combination, in' a type-writer cabinet having the well, of the sectional hinged cover of the well, the rigid frame pivoted at its opposite ends to the walls of the well, the upper side of the frame being adapted to engage one of the sections of a cover and operate the same, the movable platform hinged to the lower side of the frame, the supporting projection upon which the platform rests and moves, and the shelf-stop against which the inner end of the platform rests, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination, in a type-Writer cabinet, of the rigid frame pivoted at its opposite ends to the walls of the case and projecting to each side of the line between the pivotal points and having one side counterweighted, the movable platform hinged at its inner end to the lower side of the frame oppposite the cou liter-weight, and the proj ectionin the front of the well to support the platform, substantially as set forth.
