SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,902, dated June 24,1890.

Application filed March 8 1890.

Serial No. 343,140. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EPHRAIM M. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State 5 of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in aCombination Roller and Protector; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rollers for maps, charts, and other analogous uses.

It has for its objects, among others, to provide a cheap and efficient device of this character which may be readily taken apart when necessary for the removal or insertion of the drum or for placing a different map or chart thereon. I preferably make the easing or protector of paper and provide caps or thimbles having bearings for the pintles of the rollers, providing spring holders to retain said thimbles or caps in place.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly defined in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device with the map or chart par- .tially unrolled. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section, on an enlarged scale, through the line a: x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a vertical cross-section through the line y 3 of Fig. 2.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring now to the details of the drawin gs by letter, A designates a cylindrical casing or tube of the desired length and size and of any suitable material, preferably pa 50 per of suitable strength, and upon its under side this casing or tube is provided with a longitudinal slot or passage for the map or chart B. i

O are caps or thimbles of any suitable ma terial, preferably paper, and of such relative size as to snugly overlap the ends of the tube or casing A. These caps or thimbles are preferably formed with lugs O, by means of which and suitable securing devices the case or tube may be suspended or hung upon a wall or other support. These ears or lugs are shown as provided with button-hole slots c,- but other provisions may be made for suspending the case.

D are springs secured at their adj acentends to the upper face of the case or tube A and at their outer ends provided with right-angled bends or lips cl, designed to catch over the outer ends of the caps or thimbles after the latter are placed in position on the case and hold them in place, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and yet allow of their ready removal, when desired.

E is a drum or roller within the case and having pintles 6, having bearings in metallic hearings or eyelets f, seated in the ends of the caps or thimbles, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The map, chart, or curtain Bis secured to the roller in any suitable manner.

F is a cord wound upon the roller or drum near one end thereof within the cap or thimble with its free end extended downward through an opening I) provided therefor in the cap.

The operation is simple and apparent, the device being suspended or held in-any suit able position. The map, chart, or curtain is withdrawn from the case by simply pulling upon said map, chart, or curtain. As the article B is withdrawn from the case, the cord is wound upon the drum, and pulling on the cord winds up the map or chart.

What I claim as new is 1. The combination, with the case and its inclosed roller, of caps embracing the ends of 5 said case provided with metallic bearings for the pintles of the roller, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a paper case and paper caps embracing the case at the ends and formed with lugs G, of the roller within said case and metallic bearings for the pintles of the roller secured in the ends of said caps, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with the case and its roller, of the removable caps embracing the ends of the case and spring holders on the case for engaging and holding the caps in 7 place, substantially as described.

6. The combination, with the case having longitudinal slot at its under side, the caps upon the ends of the case and formed with ears, the springs upon the case having their ends engaging the ends of the caps, metal bearings in the ends of the caps, the roller Within the case With its pintles journaled in said bearings, and the cord Wound upon the roller at one end in areverse direction to the article carried by the roller with its free end passed through the opening in the under side of the capat that end of the roller, substanv tially as described.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
