LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,013, dated January 20, 1891.

The object is to provide simple and effective means for feeding the stick or cartridge of lubricant, whereby it may be centered within its holderand the holderitself adapted to bearings of various thicknesses.
lVith these ends in View 1n y invention con sists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will hereinafter be described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the lubricator in connection with a journal and its bearing, showing means for centering the stick or cartridge of lubricant; and Fig. 2 represents means for adjusting the lubricantholder to bearings of varying thicknesses.
A indicates a journal, and B a portion of the bearing for the journal. The bearing 13 is provided, as is common, with a perforation b, extending therethrough for the reception of the lubricant.
The lubricant-holder 0 consists of a tube of such diameter as to fit snuglyin the opening of the perforation b in the bearing and somewhat longer than the proposed stick or cartridge of lubricant. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the said holder is provided with an annular shoulder 0, adapted to rest on the outer surface of the bearing and hold its lower end free from the journal. I propose, however, to provide this holder with means for adjusting it to bearings of different thicknesses, and have shown such means in Fig. 2, to which I shall hereinafter more particularly refer.
D designates the stick or cartridge of lubricant, the diameter of which is somewhat less than that of the interior of the holder (3, so as to allow the stick to descend free from contact with the walls of the holder.
A follower E, the extreme diameter of which is considerably less than the interior diameter of the holder 0, has a free sliding movement within the holder 0, and is provided at its lower end with a head 6, fixed thereto and having an outwardly and downwardly pro jecting flange e, the lower edge of which fits with a free sliding movement the interior of the holder 0. The upper end of the stick or cartridge of lubricant is engaged by the flaring portion of the head 6, and it (the stick of lubricant) is held thereby in the center of the holder. The follower E is represented as hollow, and at its lower end, in proximity to the head 6, weights F are located sufficient to give the stick of lubricant the desired downward pressure. The hollow follower is provided at its top with a removable coverf, which in practice may be conveniently colored, in order to catch the eye and indicate the amount of lubricant in the holder. It is intended to make the coverf of light mate:
rial, in order toprevent the lubricator from being top-heavy.
The top of the holder C is provided with a removable cap G, centrally through which the smaller tube E extends, the said cap forming an upper bearing for the tube E, preventing dust or other foreign substance from entering the holder, and when removed permits the ready insertion of the stick or cartridge of lubricant.
For the purpose of adj nsting the holder 0 to bearings of different thicknesses, I provide in the present instance as the supportingshoulder a collar or nut H with an internallythreaded opening h of greater diameter at the top than at the bottom, the smallest diameter of the opening being somewhat greater than the extreme diameter of the holder. I prefer to make the bottom of the collar or nut of concave form, as shown, and to extend the bottom laterally, as shown at h, to give it a stable engagement with the journal-bearing. In connection with the interior threaded collar or nut H, I provide an exterior threaded split thimble K, adapted to surround the holder 0. The split thimble K, is further conveniently provided with a milled flange 7s for turning it, and its screw-thread is adapted to register with the interior thread of the nut H.
The operation of the adjusting device is as follows: The nut H is placed in position on the journal-bearing surrounding the perl'oration therein. The holder C is then inserted through the nut into the perforation in the bearing to such a depth as to leave its lower end free from the journal, and the split thiinble is then screwed down into the nut H, and thereby, because of the taper of the opening h in the nut, causing it (the thimble) to closely hug the holder 0 and retain it in the desired position.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a tubular holder, of a follower fitted loosely to the said holder, said follower being tubular and having a closed bottom to receive adjustable Weights and provided around its closed bottom with an outwardly and downwardly projecting flange fitting closely to the holder and serving to center a stick of grease, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the bearing and the tubular holder, of the nut or collar loosely surrounding the tubular holder and provided with a tapered threaded opening, and a threaded split thimble adapted to surround the tubular holder and engagethe Wall of the said opening in the nut or collar, and thereby clamp the holder in the desired adjustment, substantially as set forth.
