BOX-CLOSURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,687, dated March 24, 1891.

Be it known that we, JOHN CHARLES STAN- LEY and LEONARD BUTLER WRIcHTsoN, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tea-Chests, Boxes, or the Like, applicable for containing other goods or articles, (for which I have obtained patents in England June 20, 1888, No. 9,022; in India March 1, 1889, No. 420, and in Ceylon April 2t, 1880, No. 309,) of which the following is a specification.

This application is a divisional application of a pending application for patent filed by us on the 18th day of December, 1889,,Serial No. 334:,195.

In our present application these improvements refer to chests, boxes, and the like made of straw-board, wood, or other equivalent material, having their corners or edges bound with iron. The sides are along the top edges thickened by a strip of straw-board or the like, and the lid rests thereon and is strengthened by angled hoop-iron, which passes down over the sides of the box, and is secured thereto by means of screws which enter the thickened part of the sides laterally.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a box, and Figs. 2,

The bottom D may be united thereto in the manner described in our aforesaid application for patent, or as shown in Fig. 1, in the ordinary manner, via, by means of angled hoop-iron D on the outside, secured thereto by rivets D The sides A are along the top edges thickened by a strip of straw-board or the like riveted on along the inside, and by preference strengthened or protected with a strip A of hoop-iron on the inside, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or without it, as shown in Fig. 2. The lid E has angled hoop'iron E riveted to it all round by rivets E one part of the same fitting down over the sides of the box and capable of being fixed thereto by means of screws. These screws may be ordinary wood-screws F, Fig. 1, having countersunk heads and passed through from the outside and screwed laterally into the side walls of the boX, which are thickened in this place by the narrow strip A of straw-board mentioned above, or we may, as shown in Fig. 2, use screws F with ordinary heads, screwed iii-laterally from the outside, or with outer nut, Fig. 3, and in such cases we cut the holes for the screws through to the edge of the angled iron, as shown at E to allow for lifting off the lid by merely slightly loosening the nuts or screws. Fig. 4 shows a further modification in which the bolt or screw F only goes through the side A, and the strip A, which is nailed or riveted 011 to the said side, has a recess cut or stamped to take the square or rectangular head of the screw and prevent it from turning. This form of lid is very strong and protects the top edges of the sides, and. also holds the sides well together, keeping the wet out and taking the strain off the screws which fasten the lid. In orderto give a still better hold to the screws that enter the straw-board than afforded by the mere extra thickness of straw-board, we first form the screw-thread in the sides of the box by means of the screws F, and having removed them temporarily we coat the screwthread so formed with gum or the like, which binds the fibers of the straw-board together and hardens the screw-thread.

Instead of using straw-board, wood, or other equivalent material alone for the walls and lid and bottom of box, it may be covered with very thin perforated or solid sheet-iron, or sheet-iron alone may be used,in which latter case we use for the lid a ring of straw-board,

for tea or similar perishable or delicately-[lavorcd goods, lined with parchment paper or lead paper, or other suitable damp-proof inodorous paper or other material, as described and shown in our application heretofore referred to.

Sometimes, in order to render the boxes impervious to moisture, we place a packing-strip of calico, cloth, felt, or the like all round between the lid and the top of the side walls of the box and, if necessary, between the bottom and the side walls. 'here the boxes are not used for tea or other delicately-flavored articles, We may use india-rubber packing.

Having fully described our invention, what we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The herein described packing box or chest having its edges and corners strengthened and protected by means of metallic pieces secured thereto, and the sides of said box being thickened or re-en forced at their upper edges, in combination with a lid adapted to rest upon the upper thickened edges of the sides, said lid being provided at all of its four edges with angular metallic strips which are adapted to extend over the outer faces of all thesidesof the box, and screws passingth rough the portions of the said strips which extend over the sides and into the thickened portions of the latter, whereby said lid is removably secured to the box on all sides, as described.

2. The herein-described packing box or chest having its edges and corners protected and strengthened by means of angular metallic pieces secured thereto, and the sides of the box being thickened or rc-enforced at their upper edges, in combination with a lid adapted to rest upon the upper thickened edges of the sides, said lid being provided With angular metallic strips adapted to fit over the sides of the box and slotted, and screws passing through the slots of said strips and the thickened portion of the sides of the box, as and for the purpose specified.

3. The herein described packing box or chest having its edges and corners protected and strengthened by means of angular metallic pieces secured thereto, the sides of the box being thickened or re-enforced at their upper edges, in combination with alid adapted to rest upon the upper thickened edges of the sides, said lid being provided with angular metallic strips adapted to fit over the sides of the box and slotted, and screws provided with squared heads at their inner ends adapted to fit within recesses formed in the thickened portion of the sides, said screws also passing through the slots in the strips on the lid and the sides of the box, and nuts upon the outer ends of said screws, as and for the purpose specified.
