SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,708, dated May 19, 1891. Application filed November 22, 1890- Serial No, 872,304. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERIO HUFF, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Mainz, in the Duchy of Hesse and Germany game apparatus whereby a new and useful game for amusement and as a means for familiarizing little children and illiterate persons with the alphabet and its combinations in words and sentences may be played.

With this object in View the invention consists in a game apparatus comprising a series of blocks, chips, slips, or the like bearing upon their faces the letters of the alphabet, and two cubic dice, one"clie being marked on each of five sides with one of the vowels of the alphabet, the sixth side being blank, the other die having on five sides one of the numbers from 1 to 5, and one side being blank, and a board or table, chart, or the like on which are marked or arranged in five sections or divisions, each section being indicated by a vowel, the consonants of the alphabet, the letters of each section or division being designated by one'of the numbers from 1 to 5.

My invention is illustrated in the aceompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents one of the blocks or slips forming part of the apparatus. Fig. 2 represents the arrangement of the eonsonan ts in sections or divisions in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 represent-s the die bearing the vowels, and Fig. 4 represents the die hearing the numbers.

The game to be played by my apparatus is conducted as follows: First, a word or sen-.

figure cast indicates the particular consonant thus marked in the row, section, or division designated by the throw of dice bearing the vowel. Thus, for instance, if in accordance with the board as herein illustrated the vowel E be thrown with one die and thenumber 3 with the other, it means that a letter under the section marked E and that the particular are thrown, then the vowel itself is meant.

For each letter indicated by the dice thrown the player is entitled to take from the word or sentence set up a corresponding letter, and the player having the most letters after the word or sentence is exhausted is the winner.

If both dice are thrown blank, then the player throwing them has won the whole of the word or sentence and the game against all the other players. If the blank side of a vowel-die is thrown, then this does not count and a new throw is made.

Much amusement will be afforded to set up letters and words in accordance with the dice thrown as indicated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A game apparatus comprising a series of blocks, chips, slips, or the like bearing upon their faces the letters of the alphabet, two of the usual cubic dice, one being marked on each of five sides with one of the vowels of the alphabet, the sixth side being blank, the other die having on each of five sides one of the numbers from 1 to 5, one side being blank, and a board or table on which are marked or arranged in five sections, each section being indicated by a vowel, the consonants of the alphabet, the letters of each section being designated by one of the numbers from 1 to 5, substantially as described.
